Chronic residential exposure to particulate matter air pollution and systemic inflammatory markers.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to urban air pollution may accelerate atherogenesis, but mechanisms are still unclear. The induction of a low-grade systemic inflammatory state is a plausible mechanistic pathway. OBJECTIVES: We analyzed the association of residential long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and high traffic with systemic inflammatory markers. METHODS: We used baseline data from the German Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study, a population-based, prospective cohort study of 4,814 participants that started in 2000. Fine PM [aerodynamic diameter <or= 2.5 microm (PM(2.5))] exposure bas…

Effects of metals within ambient air particulate matter (PM) on human health.

We review literature providing insights on health-related effects caused by inhalation of ambient air particulate matter (PM) containing metals, emphasizing effects associated with in vivo exposures at or near contemporary atmospheric concentrations. Inhalation of much higher concentrations, and high-level exposures via intratracheal (IT) instillation that inform mechanistic processes, are also reviewed. The most informative studies of effects at realistic exposure levels, in terms of identifying influential individual PM components or source-related mixtures, have been based on (1) human and …

Characterization of fine particulate matter in Ohio: indoor, outdoor, and personal exposures.

Ambient, indoor, and personal PM2.5 concentrations were assessed based on an exhaustive study of PM2.5 performed in Ohio from 1999 to 2000. Locations in Columbus, one in an urban corridor and the other in a suburban area were involved. A third rural location in Athens, Ohio, was also established. At all three locations, elementary schools were utilized to determine outdoor, indoor, and personal PM2.5 concentrations for fourth and fifth grade students using filter-based measurements. Three groups of 30 students each were used for personal sampling at each school. Continuous ambient PM2.5 mass c

Effect of ambient relative humidity and particulate matter on the levels of asthma therapy.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the associations of the daily mean and short-term variation in ambient relative humidity (RH), temperature, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with asthma treatment steps. METHODS: We consecutively recruited 288 newly diagnosed adult patients with asthma and followed them for at least 6 months according to the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) strategy. Odds ratios (ORs) for higher GINA treatment steps required to achieve asthma control were estimated using logistic regression. We also conducted exposure-response analyses to explore potentially nonlinear …

Development of an analytical procedure for the characterization of the particulate matter emitted by the braking system.

Brake wear particulate matter (PM) is a relevant source of non-exhaust emissions, but its inorganic characterization remains analytically challenging because of the heterogeneous composition of friction materials and the low concentrations of several target analytes. In this work, a multitechnique analytical workflow was developed for the characterization of the composition of PM10 generated by WLTP-based brake dynamometer tests. Thirty-two PM10 samples were collected from tribological couples involving low-steel (LS) and non-asbestos organic (NAO) pads combined with grey cast-iron (GCI) or co…

Forecasting the concentration of the components of the particulate matter in Poland using neural networks.

Air pollution is a significant global challenge with profound impacts on human health and the environment. Elevated concentrations of various air pollutants contribute to numerous premature deaths each year. In Europe, and particularly in Poland, air quality remains a critical concern due to pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), which pose serious risks to public health and ecological systems. Effective control of PM emissions and accurate forecasting of their concentrations are essential for improving air quality and supporting public health interventions. This paper presents four advan…

The impacts of fine particulate matter on ankylosing spondylitis incidence in Southwest China.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints, is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. This study investigates the impact of air pollution and meteorological conditions on AS incidence in 14 cities across Southwest China from 2014 to 2021, focusing on immune-environmental interactions. Using a two-step approach, we applied the Fixed Effects Model to city-level data to assess the influence of air pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO, O3_8H) and meteorological factors (humidity, temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours)

Significant contribution of different sources of particulate organic matter to the photoaging of microplastics.

Particulate organic matter (POM), as an important component of organic matter, can act as a redox mediator and thus intervene in the environmental behavior of microplastics (MPs). However, quantitative information on the role of POM in the photoaging of MPs under ultraviolet (UV) light is still lacking. To raise the knowledge gap, through environmental simulation experiments and qualitative/quantitative experiments of active substances, we found that POM from peat soil has stronger oxidation capacity than POM from sediment, and the involvement of POM at high water content makes the aging of MP

Particulate matter exposure and neurodegenerative diseases: A comprehensive update on toxicity and mechanisms.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with a range of health impacts, including neurological abnormalities that affect neurodevelopment, neuroplasticity, and behavior. Recently, there has been growing interest in investigating the possible relationship between PM exposure and the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis. However, the precise mechanism by which PM affects neurodegeneration is still unclear, even though several epidemiological and animal model studies have…

Particulate Matter Concentration in Selected Facilities as an Indicator of Exposure to Their Service Activities.

In recent years, the correlation between the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere and inside buildings has been reported as high. The air inside living quarters and public utility buildings or the interiors of public transport vehicles, as well as the relationship between the internal and external sources of particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants, have underwent sufficient research. On the other hand, non-production rooms, i.e., offices, restaurants, beauty salons, etc. remain very poorly recognized in this respect. For the above reasons, the aim of this work is to determine t…

Exposure to particulate matter upregulates ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression in the murine lung.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is currently a serious global issue. Epidemiological studies have identified air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), as a risk factor for COVID-19 infection and severity of illness, in addition to numerous factors such as pre-existing conditions, aging and smoking. However, the mechanisms by which air pollution is involved in the manifestation and/or progression of COVID-19 is still unknown. In this study, we used a mouse model exposed to crude PM, collected by the cyclone method, to evaluate the pulmonary expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 …

The Impact of Particulate Matter on Outdoor Activity and Mental Health: A Matching Approach.

Exposure to air pollution affects human activity and health. Particularly, in Asian countries, the influence of particulate matter on humans has received wide attention. However, there is still a lack of research about the effects of particulate matter on human outdoor activities and mental health. Therefore, we aimed to explore the association between exposure to particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10 µm (PM10) and outdoor activity along with mental health in South Korea where issues caused by particulate matter increasingly have social and economic impacts. We examined this relat…

Numerical modelling of the suspended particulate matter dynamics in a regulated river network.

Understanding and predicting the propagation, deposition and resuspension of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in river networks is important for managing water resources, ecological habitat, pollution, navigation, hydropower generation, reservoir sedimentation, etc. Observational data are scarce and costly, and there is little feedback on the efficiency of numerical simulation tools for compensating the lack of data on a river scale of several hundreds of kilometers. This paper aims at exploring the use of a one-dimensional (1-D) hydrodynamical model for understanding the source and fate of …

The Importance of H in Particulate Organic Matter Stoichiometry, Export and Energy Flow.

The discipline of marine ecological stoichiometry has progressed rapidly over the past two decades, and continues to be at the forefront of microbial oceanography. Most of this effort has been focused on the elements carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), and to a lesser extent phosphorus (P), with little consideration of hydrogen (H), or the redox state of the organic matter pools despite the fact that H is the most abundant, and possibly the most important, element in biogeochemistry. Obtaining accurate estimates of the H content of organic matter, either in suspended or sinking particles, is a major

Particulate matter pollutants and risk of type 2 diabetes: a time for concern?

The World Health Organization estimates that worldwide in 2012 around 7 million deaths occurred prematurely due to air pollution, which is now the world's largest single environmental health risk. The higher premature mortality associated with air pollution is due to exposure to small particulate matter of 10 microns (PM10) or less in diameter. Exposure to air pollution has also been suggested as a contributing to diabetes incidence and progression. There are a number of possible biological pathways linking air pollutants to diabetes, including endothelial dysfunction, dysregulation of the vis…

Obesity as a susceptibility factor to indoor particulate matter health effects in COPD.

Our goal was to investigate whether obesity increases susceptibility to the adverse effects of indoor particulate matter on respiratory morbidity among individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Participants with COPD were studied at baseline, 3 and 6 months. Obesity was defined as a body mass index ≥30 kg·m(-2). At each time point, indoor air was sampled for 5-7 days and particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic size ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) and 2.5-10 μm (PM2.5-10) was measured. Respiratory symptoms, health status, rescue medication use, exacerbations, blood biomarkers and exhal…
