Reaginic antibody production by Hypoderma lineatum and H bovis larval antigens were evaluated in three calves using passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA). Two calves were sensitised with soluble extract of H lineatum larvae and a third was injected with 43 hatching H bovis larvae. The effects of chloroquine and some other antimalarials on the immune responses in experimental animals have been examined. Chloroquine and quinine caused significant decrease of serum anti-SRBC haemagglutination titre. Chloroquine lowered the serum IgM level and also reduced plaque-forming cells in the spleen of mice. The delayed-type hypersensitivity responses to SRBC and the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis were also diminished in rats treated with chloroquine. Thus, the immunosuppressant activity of chloroquine may explain its efficacy in various types of immune disorders.

Mice produced reaginic antibody within 1 wk of painting with the contact sensitizing agent picryl chloride. The titers, measured by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in rats, increased after repeated applications of picryl chloride. In contrast, serum agglutinins did not increase after two applications of picryl chloride. Reagin was also elicited by another contact sensitizing agent, oxazolone. Some strain variation of the response to picryl chloride was found, with CBA mice being good responders and BALB/c and C57BL/10 mice being poor responders.

Chemical inhibitors of immediate hypersensitivity were used to treat rats passively immunized against Taenia taeniaeformis with serum containing 7Sγ2a and reaginic antibodies. Little haemagglutinating antibody was detected in the serum of rats with primary Angiostrongylus cantonensis infections until the juvenile worms left the brain and lodged in the lungs about 35 days after infection. Ascaris suum-infected and uninfected pigs were vaccinated with Bordetella bronchiseptica bacterin at 8 and 28 days of age. Saponin and aluminium hydroxide were compared as adjuvants for promoting serum reagins in cattle using BHK cell lysate as allergen and the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test to demonstrate the antibodies. Saponin was the better adjuvant and provoked reagins in all the injected cattle while aluminium hydroxide did so in only 2 or 5 animals. The titres were also higher in the former case. A combination of both adjuvants stimulated reagin titres marginally higher than saponin alone while BHK cell lysate without adjuvant failed to provoke demonstrable reagins.

Guinea pigs fed cow's milk within 2 days of birth may acquire tolerance to anaphylactic sensitisation to cow's milk proteins. Appreciable amounts of beta-lactoglobulin may be detected in their blood, in contrast with animals receiving cow's milk later than this age. Uptake of beta-lactoglobulin from the gut to circulation ceases after the 6th postnatal day. These findings could be relevant to cot death in the human infant should the anaphylactic hypothesis be substantiated.

In this study, we investigated the effect of aqueous extract of Prunella vulgaris (Labiatae; PVAE) on the mast cell-mediated allergy model. We found that PVAE (0.001-0.1 g/kg) dose dependently inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis and serum histamine release in mice.
