Child homicide represents a severe form of violent crime, and cases identified exclusively through skeletal remains are uncommon and pose particular forensic challenges, requiring a multidisciplinary investigative approach. We report a Romanian cold case involving a 5-year-old girl who disappeared in 2006 and whose remains were discovered in 2021 in a shallow grave beneath rose bushes on her father's property. Clothing analysis revealed nine perforations consistent with sharp-force trauma, subsequently confirmed through forensic reconstruction. The remains were completely skeletonized and oste

BACKGROUND: Cleft foot is a very rare congenital anomaly, which is characterized by central rays deficiency of the foot. It is also known as split foot or ectrodactyly of the foot, and it is very often combined with splitting of the hands. The defect develops due to insufficient activity of the median apical ectodermal ridge, which leads to an increase in cell death or a decrease in cell proliferation. Due to the rarity of the pathology, there are few papers on the surgical treatment of this congenital foot disease, and publications to date concern the treatment of children.

Previously doctors decided what was right or wrong in medicine, today our individual freedom is more limited. External influences including the human rights act, government initiatives, management protocols, professional guidelines, multi-disciplinary decision-making and financial restrictions intervene between the doctor and the patient. Furthermore the move away from paternalism in the doctor-patient relationship to patient empowerment (informed consent) has put patients in charge of their medical destiny. Increased public expectations leading to health screening, genetic profiling and treat

INTRODUCTION: Bi-allelic pathogenic variants in MYBPC3 cause a rare and lethal neonatal form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) that often evades detection during routine prenatal screening. We report a comprehensive investigation of such a case to highlight the clinical utility of postmortem molecular diagnosis.
METHODS: A two-month-old infant died from sudden-onset acute heart failure. We performed a full forensic autopsy with detailed histological examination and conducted trio-based whole-exome sequencing (WES) on the proband and parents to identify the genetic etiology.
RESULTS: Postm

The prevalence and magnitude of effect of individual risk markers for specific developmental disorders vary widely across diagnostic category. The four study cohorts for this project were patients from four diagnostic registries in North Dakota for fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), autism, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and Tourette syndrome. These four cohorts were used to estimate prevalence and magnitude of effect of parental risk markers in patients with developmental disabilities. Cases with North Dakota birth certificates were matched with controls. Using birth certificate data, we the

Previous studies have identified mutations in five ion channel genes as a cause of long QT syndrome, a heterogeneous disorder characterized by prolongation of the QT interval, multiform ventricular tachycardia (torsades de pointes), seizures, syncope, and sudden death. However, in these studies, the average age of initial symptoms is in the third decade of life or later, and few reports have described the genetic causes of long QT syndrome presenting in the prenatal or neonatal period. We used a candidate gene approach to identify the genetic cause of long QT syndrome in an infant whose initia

Malignant hyperthermia, a life-threatening complication of anaesthesia, occurred in a 5 1/2-year-old girl undergoing dental surgery in a dental clinic. During induction, after 20 mg of succinylcholine, the anaesthetist noted a moderate rigidity of the mandible that did not interfere with the tracheal intubation. However, after 45 minutes, the temperature rose to 38.8 degrees C, pulse was rapid at 160 per minute and the child was slightly cyanosed. The diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia was made (the temperature eventually reached 40.8 degrees C). The child was immediately treated with refrige

Sexual cannibalism is among the most extreme outcomes of sexual conflict, and the Australian widow spider Latrodectus hasselti is well known for this behaviour. Curiously, males of L. hasselti actively facilitate cannibalism through self-sacrificial mating traits. During copulation, the male somersaults his abdomen onto the female's fangs and develops an abdominal constriction that prevents his premature death, allowing him to monopolize paternity. The closely related sister species L. katipo, however, lacks self-sacrificial mating traits. Given the close relatedness of the two species, the di

Background: Gestational trophoblastic diseases comprise the hydatiform moles (HMs), complete or partial, an abnormal development of trophoblastic tissue. HMs derive from a gametogenesis error during conception leading to an anomalous chromosomal asset. In the complete hydatiform mole (CHM), when one or two spermatozoa enter an empty oocyte, the karyotype, paternally derived, is diploid 46,XX or 46,XY. CHM is characterized by massive hydropic degeneration of the villi, with no fetal structures, easily detected by ultrasound (US) in early gestation, confirmed by elevated maternal beta-hCG levels

Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) may be caused by biallelic variants in the TSHR gene. CH due to thyroid dysgenesis has also been linked to pathogenic variants of the nucleotide kinase 2, homeobox 5 (NKX2-5) gene, which can also cause sudden cardiac death from ventricular arrhythmia. In particular, the NKX2-5 p.Arg25Cys missense variant has been repeatedly reported in patients with congenital heart defects and, more rarely, with hypogonadism. We report the case of a 7 year old boy with ventricular arrhythmias, thyroid dysgenesis and intellectual disability, born from consanguineous Tunisian pare

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have addressed perinatal outcomes in Hispanic, black, and white non-Hispanic women and demonstrated that although foreign-born Mexican American women have many demographic and socioeconomic risk factors, their rates of low birth weight (LBW) infants and infant mortality are similar to those of white women. This phenomenon has been termed an epidemiologic paradox. There have been no population-based studies on women of Asian Indian origin, a relatively new, highly educated, and affluent immigrant group that has been reported to have a high rate of LBW infants. The ob

BACKGROUND: Child mortality rates have been declining in most developing countries. We studied child and maternal mortality risk factors for child mortality in Beira city in July 1993, after a decade of conflict in Mozambique.
METHODS: A community-based cluster sample survey of 4609 women of childbearing age was conducted. Indirect techniques were used to estimate child mortality ('children ever born' method and Preceding Birth Techniques (PBT) and maternal mortality (sisterhood method). Deaths among the most recent born child, born since July 1990, were classified as cases (n = 106), and two

BACKGROUND: Awareness of factors associated with life-threatening asthma attacks and asthma mortality is essential for risk prediction in asthma care. There is limited evidence to inform risk factors in children and young people (CYP). The aim of this systematic review is to synthesize existing data to report risk factors for life-threatening asthma attacks and asthma deaths in CYP.
METHODS: This review followed PRISMA-reporting-guidelines and was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023494203). We included observational studies of CYP aged 0-18 years with asthma, published in English, from 2000 to t

OBJECTIVE: To describe the methodological procedures and some sociodemographic and medical care characteristics of the population studied in a research project on perinatal health developed in the Ribeirão Preto county, SP, in 1994, in order to make historical comparisons with the indicators of mother-child health of a similar study conducted 15 years before in the same municipality.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: All the hospital births that occurred in Ribeirão Preto from June 1978 to May 1979 were studied by interviewing the mothers and obtaining data about maternal and paternal habits, social situa

BACKGROUND: In the present study, we report on a couple who underwent prenatal genetic diagnosis for autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD).
CASE PRESENTATION: This healthy couple had previously had a healthy boy but had experienced two consecutive neonatal deaths due to respiratory distress resulting from pulmonary hypoplasia caused by oligohydramnios. The woman consulted our facility after she realized she was pregnant again. We promptly performed a carrier test for the PKHD1 gene by target exome sequencing of samples from the couple. A pathogenic mutation was identified only

BACKGROUND: Partial mole is one of the two distinctive subtypes of hydatidiform mole. It is usually paternally derived triploid conceptions in which embryonal development occurs in association with trophoblastic hyperplasia. The definite diagnosis is confirmed by pathological and cytogenetic studies. Ultrasound might be helpful to diagnose partial mole in the first trimester.
CASE: A 25-year-old woman, gravida 2, para 0-0-1-0, was initially seen for antenatal care at 6 weeks' pregnant. Ultrasound was undertaken at 13 weeks' pregnancy due to her first fetal anomaly, which demonstrated partial

BACKGROUND: For the past 40 years, evidence has been accumulating on the effects of passive smoking on the fetus and on children. Over this period, research methods have become more precise and accurate, with confounding factors controlled for and actual exposure to smoke measured and validated by cotinine tests on body fluids. This review follows the progress of these studies and assesses the weight of evidence for various health risks of passive smoking on children from before birth to adolescence.
METHODS: Nearly 200 research papers published worldwide were reviewed.

Assuring equitable access of patients to needed organ transplants is a responsibility that must be shared by transplantation teams, the patients, their families, referring physicians, and society as a whole. Barriers of major proportion still exist that strongly bias the initial selection of patients for placement on waiting lists and adversely affect the rates of transplantation among the older age groups, nonwhites, and the poor. The very issue of making up the waiting list is fundamental to the development of fair and equitable distribution of the national resource of organs for transplanta

Liver disease is a global health problem responsible for more than two million deaths annually. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are major contributors to chronic liver disease-related morbidity and mortality. Factors like diet and alcohol consumption have become key drivers of liver pathologies including steatosis, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. To date very few treatments are available, hence there is a critical need for the development of novel therapies to slow down the development/progression of
