Dietary Patterns and the Social Development Index in Mexico City: A Machine-Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Dietary composition reflects the interplay of individual and contextual factors, yet its relationship with socioeconomic-territorial conditions remains insufficiently characterized in large Latin American cities. METHODS: We identified empirical dietary patterns among 3439 adults from the cohort in Mexico City and examined their association with the Social Development Index (SDI), a composite area-level measure of socioeconomic-territorial development. Energy-adjusted food-group intakes were analyzed using k-means clustering, and supervised machine-learning models with SHAP-based

A new feature extraction framework based on wavelets for breast cancer diagnosis.

This paper investigates a pattern recognition framework in order to determine and classify breast cancer cases. Initially, a two-class separation study classifying normal and abnormal (cancerous) breast tissues is achieved. The Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Dense Scale Invariant Feature Transform (DSIFT), and Local Configuration Pattern (LCP) methods are used to extract the rotation- and scale-invariant features for all tissue patches. A classification is made utilizing Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-Nearest Neighborhood (k-NN), Decision Tree, and Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis

Predicting and explaining poor prognosis in diabetic kidney disease using SHAP-based interpretable machine learning.

Prognostic assessment of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is essential for personalized management. This study developed eight machine learning models using data from 180 biopsy-proven patients with DKD to predict a composite endpoint of all-cause mortality, dialysis initiation, or renal transplantation. Internally, the Naive Bayes (NB) model achieved the highest accuracy of 82.3%, while the logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and NB models shared the highest AUC of 0.788. An independent external validation confirmed robust generalizability, yielding an AUC of 0.834. SHAP anal

Autism Detection in Children using Common Spatial Patterns of MEG Signals.

Autism exhibits a wide range of developmental disabilities and is associated with aberrant anatomical and functional neural patterns. To detect autism in young children (4-7 years) in an automatic and non-invasive fashion, we have recorded magnetoencephalogram (MEG) signals from 30 autistic and 30 age-matched typically developing (TD) children. We have used a machine learning classification framework with common spatial pattern (CSP)-based logarithmic band power (LBP) features. When comparing the LBP feature to the conventional logarithmic variance (LV) spatial pattern, CSP + LBP (92.77%) has

Resting-State fMRI Co-Activation Patterns Reveal Multiscale Brain Functional Alterations in Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma: Transcriptomic, Cellular, Neurochemical, and Machine-Learning Signatures.

BACKGROUND: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is increasingly recognized as involving brain alterations beyond the visual pathway, but the dynamic organization of large-scale brain activity and its biological context remain unclear. Co-activation pattern (CAP) analysis can characterize transient brain states and may provide insight into state-specific functional reorganization in PACG. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 44 PACG patients and 57 healthy controls. CAP analysis was performed across multiple frequency bands, and six CAP states were identified. Group differenc

Characterizing the antigenic evolution of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 from 2009 to 2023.

The H1N1pdm09 virus has been a persistent threat to public health since the 2009 pandemic. Particularly, since the relaxation of COVID-19 pandemic mitigation measures, the influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 have been concurrently prevalent worldwide. To determine the antigenic evolution pattern of H1N1pdm09 and develop preventive countermeasures, we collected influenza sequence data and immunological data to establish a new antigenic evolution analysis framework. A machine learning model (XGBoost, accuracy = 0.86, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.89) was constructed using

Diagnosing developmental dyscalculia on the basis of reliable single case FMRI methods: promises and limitations.

FMRI-studies are mostly based on a group study approach, either analyzing one group or comparing multiple groups, or on approaches that correlate brain activation with clinically relevant criteria or behavioral measures. In this study we investigate the potential of fMRI-techniques focusing on individual differences in brain activation within a test-retest reliability context. We employ a single-case analysis approach, which contrasts dyscalculic children with a control group of typically developing children. In a second step, a support-vector machine analysis and cluster analysis techniques s

Longitudinal fetal heart rate analysis identifies neonates with metabolic acidemia requiring therapeutic hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread use of intrapartum fetal monitoring, rates of fetal brain injury remain unchanged. Neonatal encephalopathy due to hypoxia-ischemia is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, often occurring in the absence of acute intrapartum events. Current fetal heart rate interpretation guidelines rely on static, cross-sectional assessments and offer limited guidance for managing "indeterminate" patterns. Machine learning provides an objective, longitudinal analysis of the entire intrapartum fetal heart rate tracing and may enhance the identification of fetuses at

Early identification of major depression risk among reproductive-age women using hormonal contraceptives in southern Ethiopia: A Machine Learning Approach.

Machine-learning (ML) algorithms are increasingly valuable in health sciences because they can analyze complex, high-dimensional data and detect patterns that may not be easily identified using traditional statistical methods. These models can efficiently classify individuals into low- and high-risk groups, enabling early detection of conditions such as depression, cancer, and diabetes before symptoms become severe. Thus, by revealing intricate patterns in sizable health datasets, machine-learning analysis facilitates the precise and early identification of high-risk patients, facilitating pro

Transcriptomic Signatures of Microglial Phagocytosis Reveal Diagnostic Markers and Immune Landscape in Alzheimer's Disease.

The core pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) include Aβ plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, which collectively drive the neurodegenerative process. Meanwhile, the phagocytic function of microglia plays a dual role in AD: it attempts to clear pathological proteins such as Aβ, but its chronic activation may also exacerbate neuroinflammation and synaptic damage. This study integrated microarray data from AD cohorts in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Through differential expression analysis, protein-protein interaction network construction, and three machine learning alg

A high-performance keyboard neural prosthesis enabled by task optimization.

Communication neural prostheses are an emerging class of medical devices that aim to restore efficient communication to people suffering from paralysis. These systems rely on an interface with the user, either via the use of a continuously moving cursor (e.g., mouse) or the discrete selection of symbols (e.g., keyboard). In developing these interfaces, many design choices have a significant impact on the performance of the system. The objective of this study was to explore the design choices of a continuously moving cursor neural prosthesis and optimize the interface to maximize information th

Machine Learning-Driven Integration of Cancer Cell Phenotypes Predicts Cisplatin Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Precision medicine has personalized anticancer therapies and has been considered standard practice. Although current cancer genomic profiling tests are powerful tools to predict the efficacy of molecular targeted drugs or immune checkpoint inhibitors, they are not readily applicable for classical anticancer agents. In this study, we report a novel concept of phenotype-based classification using machine learning analysis of gene expression patterns to predict the effectiveness of anticancer agents. METHODS: Hierarchical clustering of IC50 values distinguished cisplatin-sensitive an
