The eyes are central to face detection: revisiting the foundations of face processing.

Face detection feels effortless, yet it requires finely tuned computations to extract socially meaningful signals from the visual stream. Here, we used the Bubbles method to isolate the facial features and spatial frequency information that support face categorization. Across three experiments varying in task demands and visual context, the eye region consistently emerged as the most diagnostic source of information, particularly in high spatial frequencies. This finding held whether participants distinguished faces from noise, from non-face objects, or from real-world categories-suggesting th

Face-like holistic processing in non-face stimuli.

Holistic processing of visual stimuli has long been regarded as unique to faces, or otherwise extended to other object categories given sufficient expertise. We designed novel abstract stimuli that are recognizable strictly by configural information, and matched control stimuli that require the use of only featural information. We then tested four classic markers of holistic perception: inversion, misalignment, part-whole, and composite effects. We found that second-order configuration stimuli elicited robust holistic effects, while featural stimuli do not, showing that such effects emerge spe

Hyperfamiliarity for faces: Preserved core face processing with altered medial temporal lobe connectivity in a single case study.

Hyperfamiliarity for faces (HFF) is a rare condition in which unfamiliar faces evoke an abnormal sense of familiarity. We present a case study of Nell, a 49-year-old woman who developed hyperfamiliarity following a severe migraine. Using a combination of behavioural and neuroimaging approaches, we investigated the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying her condition. Behaviourally, Nell demonstrated accurate recognition of famous and personally familiar faces, but frequently misclassified unfamiliar faces as familiar. Structural MRI scans revealed no overt abnormalities, and functional ima

Statistically efficient neural encoding of natural object variability shapes the temporal dynamics of visual processing.

Object perception unfolds dynamically over millisecond timescales, yet the organisational principles that shape the emerging neural responses are not fully understood. Traditional hypothesis-driven approaches risk constraining interpretations by focusing on pre-selected object features. To circumvent this limitation, we applied a data-driven framework to behavioural and neuroimaging data obtained from the THINGS initiative, which provides a systematic sampling of real-world objects. Behaviourally relevant stimulus dimensions were derived from prior large-scale similarity judgements, offering a

Abnormal basic visual processing functions in binocular fusion disorders.

Heterophoria is a common type of binocular fusion disorder that consists of a latent eye misalignment with potential consequences on daily activities such as reading or working on a computer (with CVS). Crowding, a type of contextual modulation, can also impair reading. Our recent studies found an abnormal pattern of low-level visual processing with larger perceptive fields (PF) in heterophoria. The PF is the fundamental processing unit of human vision and both masking and crowding depend on its size. We investigated how heterophoria would impact the PF's size via a lateral masking experiment

Decoding the temporal dynamics of affective scene processing.

Natural images containing affective scenes are used extensively to investigate the neural mechanisms of visual emotion processing. Functional fMRI studies have shown that these images activate a large-scale distributed brain network that encompasses areas in visual, temporal, and frontal cortices. The underlying spatial and temporal dynamics, however, remain to be better characterized. We recorded simultaneous EEG-fMRI data while participants passively viewed affective images from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Applying multivariate pattern analysis to decode EEG data, and

The vanishing of the sun: a manifestation of cortical plasticity.

In Monet's painting impression. Rising Sun, when one steadily fixates the image of a sailor in the center of the picture for several seconds, the solar disk progressively disappears, being replaced in both brightness and color by the surrounding sky. This "filling-in" phenomenon reflects a process of cortical remapping, similar to the one that occurs in the presence of visual field defects. Filling-in is largely ignored by clinicians, despite its major implications in ophthalmologic practice, especially the nonrecognition of visual field deficits.

The brain's balancing act: Adjusting its neural noise to optimise performance.

Neural noise is an unavoidable byproduct of brain function. Rather than noise being merely an unavoidable limitation, accumulating evidence suggests it may serve a functional role in maintaining optimal neural processing. Some theoretical accounts suggest that the brain may modulate its noise level to achieve this; however, experimental and computational evidence that illustrates this dynamic nature of neural noise is limited. Here, we investigated whether the brain aims to optimise its neural noise levels in response to task demands using a visual letter identification task with varying stimu

Rotation-tolerant representations elucidate the time-course of high-level object processing.

Despite the very different retinal images that result from different viewing conditions, humans have little difficulty recognising visual objects in varying circumstances. One source of variability is 2-D rotation, which results in an object having different orientations. Here, we studied how the brain transforms rotated object images into object representations that are tolerant to rotation. We measured time-varying electroencephalography responses to object images shown in eight different orientations, presented at either 5 Hz or 20 Hz. We used multivariate classification to assess when rota

The "Crowd Size Illusion" and the Relativity of Number Perception.

When we investigate busy visual scenes, how do we estimate the number of objects that we see? Most work on number perception answers this question by focusing on properties of the to-be-estimated set of objects-their number, their size, their relative position, and so on. Here, in contrast, we show that perceived number is influenced by extraneous visual information. In six experiments, participants were shown "crowds" of dots that filled "seats" in a visual grid, asking whether the perceived number is influenced not only by the number of occupied seats, but also the number of unoccupied seats

The role of perceptual and word identification spans in reading efficiency: Evidence from hearing and deaf readers.

Theories of reading posit that decisions about "where" and "when" to move the eyes are driven by visual and linguistic factors, extracted from the perceptual span and word identification span, respectively. We tested this hypothesized dissociation by masking, outside of a visible window, either the spaces between the words (to assess the perceptual span, Experiment 1) or the letters within the words (to assess the word identification span, Experiment 2). We also investigated whether deaf readers' previously reported larger reading span was specifically linked to one of these spans. We analyzed

Testing the distributed representation hypothesis in object recognition in two open datasets.

Neural representation has long been thought to follow the modularity hypothesis, which states that each type of information corresponds to a specific brain area. Though supported by many studies, this hypothesis surfers the pitfall of inefficiency for information encoding. To overcome difficulties the modularity representation hypothesis faced, researchers have proposed that information may be distributed represented in a specific brain area. The distributed representation hypothesis along with the multi-variate pattern approaches have made great success in detecting representation patterns in

Unique N170 signatures to words and faces in deaf ASL signers reflect experience-specific adaptations during early visual processing.

Previous studies with deaf adults reported reduced N170 waveform asymmetry to visual words, a finding attributed to reduced phonological mapping in left-hemisphere temporal regions compared to hearing adults. An open question remains whether this pattern indeed results from reduced phonological processing or from general neurobiological adaptations in visual processing of deaf individuals. Deaf ASL signers and hearing nonsigners performed a same-different discrimination task with visually presented words, faces, or cars, while scalp EEG time-locked to the onset of the first item in each pair w

Neuroplasticity in cerebral visual impairment (CVI): Assessing functional vision and the neurophysiological correlates of dorsal stream dysfunction.

Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) results from perinatal injury to visual processing structures and pathways and is the most common individual cause of pediatric visual impairment and blindness in developed countries. While there is mounting evidence demonstrating extensive neuroplastic reorganization in early onset, profound ocular blindness, how the brain reorganizes in the setting of congenital damage to cerebral (i.e. retro-geniculate) visual pathways remains comparatively poorly understood. Individuals with CVI exhibit a wide range of visual deficits and, in particular, present with impair

[Neural mechanisms for object and color recognition].

We reported double-dissociation between the visual processing of the edges and the surfaces of objects. Patients with lateral occipital damage showed selective impairment in the perception of edges whereas those with medial ventral occipital damage showed selective impairment in the perception of the 3D structure of the surface. Patients with medial ventral occipital damage also exhibited impaired perception of color, which is also a surface property. Those results were consistent with those from neuroimaging studies. Taken together, those studies suggest that objects may be processed in two s

Disorders of visual recognition.

Agnosias are disorders of recognition, specific to one sensory channel, that affect either the perceptual analysis of the stimulus or the recognition of its meaning. In the visual modality, objects, faces, and colors can be separately disrupted. Apperceptive object agnosia refers to failure to achieve a structured description of the shape of the object. Associative agnosia refers to inability to attribute a meaning to a correctly perceived stimulus. It must be differentiated from optic aphasia, in which the object is recognized but cannot be named in the visual modality. Associative agnosia an

Letter identification and lateral masking in dyslexic and average readers.

Lateral masking and letter identification in dyslexic and average readers were investigated with a methodology that corrected for some of the weaknesses of the Geiger and Lettvin studies (1986, 1987). Target letters were presented alone or embedded within three-letter arrays at retinal locations from 0 degrees to 15 degrees to the right or left of a fixation point. A foveal letter, which was the same as or different from a target letter, appeared as a distractor, and comparisons were made between scaled and unscaled stimuli. Dyslexic readers were found to be better than average readers at dete

Texture discrimination: representation of orientation and luminance differences in cells of the cat striate cortex.

Neuronal texture discrimination in the cat striate cortex was investigated by measuring the responses of single cells to different pattern structures. The representation of two independent features, texture orientation and texture luminance, was analysed in detail and the sensitivity of neurones to either feature was studied at different levels of structure density. Texture patterns were systematically moved across the receptive field. From the cell response to various parts of the pattern, "response patterns" were generated which displayed the cell transform of the textured stimulus pattern.

Pattern electroretinogram and visually evoked cortical potentials in glaucoma.

Electroretinograms (P-ERG) and cortical potentials (P-VECP) evoked by checkerboard patterns were examined in patients with defects of the ganglion cell and nerve fiber layers due to glaucoma. Only a few patients exhibited a prolonged latency in the P-VECP, whereas in the P-ERG all patients with papillary and visual field defects revealed a significantly attenuated amplitude. Since there is a substantial fluctuation in the assessment of papillary excavation and visual field, the P-ERG offers a further means of evaluating and follow-up of retinal function in glaucoma patients.
