Achieving sustainability: Determinants of conscious green purchasing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has spread worldwide, resulting in crises in public health and sustainable development. Aimed at understanding the det … gnificantly mediated the relationships of unconditional and conditional GPB with media exposure and peer influence. Contrary to expectations, NEAR negatively moderated the formation process of conscious GPB. Avoiding antisocial behavior among adolescents: The positive influence of classmates' prosocial behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research has shown that classmates' behavior serves as a descriptive norm for adolescents' individual behavior. While earlier studies primarily focused on negative peer influence, classmates' prosocial behavior might be associated with positive individual development. We hypothesized more classroom-level prosocial behavior predicts a lower likelihood of future antisocial behavior of individual students over and above the effect of classmates' antisocial behavior. We further assumed this effect is mediated by adolescents' attitudes toward antisocial behavior. METHODS: To te…

Engage and adapt: peer-led implementation of HIV navigation in Australia.

Background Alongside partnership, adaptation is one of the enduring themes of the Australian response to HIV, but the ability of peer insight and engagement to shape responses to change is often undervalued. In this article, we present a case study of a peer navigation for people living with HIV, run in partnership with clinical stakeholders, to examine its effectiveness and adaptability within a changing epidemiological landscape. Methods We draw on interviews and focus groups conducted in 2019 and 2020 with 30 peer workers, management and clinical stakeholders of a peer navigation program fo

Peer attitudes towards children with cleft lip and palate: An interaction of visual and auditory cues?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: For children with speech disorders related to cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP±L), effective communication presents significant challenges. Listeners often form judgments based on the speech signal, contributing to stigmatization and negative stereotyping. When a child also has a cleft lip, perceptions may be further influenced. Limited research has explored peer attitudes towards individuals with CP±L using audiovisual stimuli. This study aimed to examine peer attitudes of children towards children with CP±L, analyzing how these attitudes vary based on auditory,

Peer Victimization and Callous-Unemotional Traits: The Impact of Parents and Teachers.

Research on the link between peer victimization and callous-unemotional (CU) traits has primarily relied on cross-sectional designs and yielded equivocal findings. In light of the poor outcomes related to peer victimization and CU traits, it is important to determine whether this link is reciprocal in nature and to identify factors that may influence its strength. Accordingly, the current study investigated the bidirectional association between peer victimization and CU traits over a 6-month period, accounting for the moderating effects of parents (i.e., support and hostility) and teachers (i.

Intervention and prevention of steroid use in adolescents.

Athletes with a higher intent to use anabolic steroids were similar to students who indicated no predisposition to use steroids on economic, academic, and physical measures. They had similar understandings of anabolic steroid effects, and their self-rated understandings of how to weight train and of sports nutrition were similar. In addition, the influence of the coaches and the media and the perceived prevalence of anabolic steroid use were not different between the higher- and lower-intent students. These results demonstrated several significant differences. Higher-intent students had higher

How Much Peer Review Is Enough? Rethinking Scholarly Service in Academic Medicine.

Peer review is widely regarded as the cornerstone of scientific publishing, yet it depends on the voluntary efforts of a limited portion of the academic workforce. For clinician-scientists in academic medicine, peer review represents an essential but largely unrecognized component of faculty workload, competing directly with research, clinical care, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. Despite its central role in ensuring scientific rigor, peer review is rarely formally measured, incentivized, or incorporated into promotion and evaluation processes. This commentary examines the growi

The Who and Where of Drinking: Examining the Role of Impulsivity.

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity is thought to reflect a vulnerability to alcohol-related problems. Research suggests that impulsive individuals may engage in heavier alcohol use in stimulating environments. However, prior studies have not tested this assumption using an in vivo approach (i.e., daily diary). This study examined whether both high sensory stimulating contexts and heavy peer drinking contexts moderate the association between impulsivity and alcohol consumption. METHOD: Over a two-week period, participants (N = 102; 61.8% female) responded to daily notifications assessing their alcohol con

Perceived peer engagement in HIV-related sexual risk behaviors and self-reported risk-taking among female sex workers in Guangxi, China.

Searching for modifiable perceptions that are associated with sexual risk behaviors among female sex workers (FSWs) are considered a priority in HIV/sexually transmitted disease preventions. Perception of peers' involvement in risk behaviors, a key correlate of individual risk behaviors, has barely been studied among FSWs. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 1022 FSWs in Guangxi, China, a country with rapid growth in both HIV epidemic and commercial sex. Multiple imputation using chained equation (MICE) was applied to handle missing values (1-10%) in the data-set. Regression ana

Friendships and peer relationships and self-harm ideation and behaviour among young people: a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Friendships and peer relationships have an important role in the experience of self-harm ideation and behaviour in young people, yet they typically remain overlooked. This systematic review and narrative synthesis explores the extant literature on this topic to identify important relationships between these constructs. We did a keyword search of peer-reviewed empirical articles relating to friendships and peer relationships and self-harm ideation and behaviour in young people (aged 11-25 years). We identified 90 articles with evidence primarily from adolescents aged 11-18 years, including mixe

Presence of an unfamiliar peer reverses escalated cocaine intake in male rats: Involvement of the subthalamic nucleus.

The immediate social context critically modulates drug consumption. The presence of an unfamiliar conspecific, naive to the drug, at the time of consumption reduces cocaine self-administration in male rats during short-access sessions, as well as drug intake in human cocaine users. The subthalamic nucleus (STN), a brain structure involved in cocaine addiction and limbic processes, has been proposed to mediate such social influence on this limited level of drug intake. Whether this influence extends to escalated drug consumption remains an open question. In this study, we compared the effect of

Latent Clusters of Peer Behaviors in Childhood and Relevance for Understanding Substance Use in Early Adolescence.

Peers have been found to be an important influence on adolescent behavior. However, there remains limited research examining childhood peer behaviors as predictors of later substance use. Examinations have not included full behavior profiles comprising both antisocial and prosocial peer behaviors. This study sought to identify latent clusters of peer behaviors during childhood and their relevance for understanding substance use. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) dataset was analyzed. These data are composed of the full ABCD sample of 11,880 United States children aged 9-10 year

How peer support and pressure shape career indecision: the mediating role of career calling and the buffering role of internalized prosocial values.

INTRODUCTION: Career indecision is a prevalent developmental challenge among emerging adults, yet the mechanisms through which peer influence relates to decisional difficulty remain poorly understood. Drawing on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and the career calling literature, this study tested a moderated mediation model in which positive peer career support and negative peer career pressure are linked to career indecision through career calling, with internalized prosocial values moderating the association between negative peer pressure and calling. METHODS: Survey data from 524 unde…

Subthalamic nucleus mediates the modulation on cocaine self-administration induced by ultrasonic vocalization playback in rats.

Drug intake is known to be under the influence of social context. We have recently shown that presence of a peer influences drug intake in both rats and humans. Whether or not social acoustic communications between the peers play a role during cocaine or sucrose self-administration (SA) was investigated here using playback of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) at 50 and 22 kHz, conveying, respectively, positive and negative internal affective states in adult rats. To assess the neurobiological substrate of a potential USV influence on drug and food intake, we tested the effects of subthalamic nuc…

Social networks, social participation, and health among youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi.

Extensive research documents that social network characteristics affect health, but knowledge of peer networks of youth in Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa is limited. We examine the networks and social participation of youth living in extreme poverty in rural Malawi, using in-depth interviews with 32 youth and caregivers. We describe youth's peer networks and assess how gender and the context of extreme poverty influence their networks and participation, and how their networks influence health. In-school youth had larger, more interactive, and more supportive networks than out-of-school youth, a

MEG signatures of long-term effects of agreement and disagreement with the majority.

People often change their beliefs by succumbing to an opinion of others. Such changes are often referred to as effects of social influence. While some previous studies have focused on the reinforcement learning mechanisms of social influence or on its internalization, others have reported evidence of changes in sensory processing evoked by social influence of peer groups. In this study, we used magnetoencephalographic (MEG) source imaging to further investigate the long-term effects of agreement and disagreement with the peer group. The study was composed of two sessions. During the first sess
