Harm reduction services and interventions for People Who Use Drugs (PWUD) in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) between 2013-2024: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) the response to substance use has primarily been abstinence-based, acute-care-oriented treatments. While harm reduction services (HRS) and interventions have expanded in LAC over the last decade, the research evidence on such programs has been sparse and disjointed. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review will map peer-reviewed literature on HRS and interventions in LAC, and synthesize gaps and opportunities for policy, practice, and research. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Studies conducted in LAC. The HRS that will be included in the search are opioid ago

Utilizing research in professional practice.

A review of the rehabilitation, disability studies, and allied health literature suggests the presence of numerous factors that impede the utilization of research by practitioners. The purpose of this article is to describe these factors and offer potential solutions that could enable rehabilitation professionals to integrate research findings into their practice. Specifically, the authors recommend strategies to (a) contextualize research throughout pre-service curricula, (b) establish researcher-stakeholder partnerships, (c) increase the accessibility of research to practitioners, and (d) es

A Systematic Review of School Personnel's Involvement in Function-Based Intervention for Students With Extensive Support Needs.

Although function-based interventions (FBIs) are effective for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, less is known about FBIs for students with extensive support needs (ESN) and school personnel involvement in FBI development and implementation. As such, we conducted a systematic literature review of 14 single-case research studies involving FBI implementation in K-12 U.S. school settings to address challenging behavior among 18 students with ESN. To identify relevant peer-reviewed articles, dissertations, and theses published between 2006 and March 2025, we searched 10

Co-designing with adults with acquired neurological disability in the community: a scoping review protocol.

IntroductionCo-designing healthcare research and health services is becoming increasingly prominent. Co-design invites people with disability to leverage their lived experience knowledge to improve service provision, as well as ensuring meaningful and relevant research. Given the emerging nature of the use of co-design with adults with neurological disability, well-defined guidelines on best practice are yet to be developed. The aim of this scoping review is to synthesise available peer-reviewed literature which investigates the use of co-design in research and/or service development with adul

Web-Based Forums for People Experiencing Substance Use or Gambling Disorders: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: For people experiencing substance use or gambling disorders, web-based peer-supported forums are a space where they can share their experiences, gather around a collective goal, and find mutual support. Web-based peer support can help to overcome barriers to attending face-to-face meetings by enabling people experiencing addiction to seek support beyond their physical location and with the benefit of anonymity if desired. Understanding who participates in web-based peer-supported forums (and how), and the principles underpinning forums, can also assist those interested in designing

Investigating Key Elements of Peer Support Programs Focused on Recovery and Reentry in Community-Based Organizations: A Qualitative Implementation Science Study.

BACKGROUND: Peer support programs are recognized as an evidence-based practice to effectively support individuals in recovery from substance use and reduce recidivism. Peer support is provided by trained individuals with lived experience who guide individuals navigating similar life challenges. Organizations design and structure peer support programs differently; some have developed unique approaches to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. This study provides guidance for implementing peer support programs within community based organizations with a focus on recovery or reentry after

Friendships and peer relationships and self-harm ideation and behaviour among young people: a systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Friendships and peer relationships have an important role in the experience of self-harm ideation and behaviour in young people, yet they typically remain overlooked. This systematic review and narrative synthesis explores the extant literature on this topic to identify important relationships between these constructs. We did a keyword search of peer-reviewed empirical articles relating to friendships and peer relationships and self-harm ideation and behaviour in young people (aged 11-25 years). We identified 90 articles with evidence primarily from adolescents aged 11-18 years, including mixe

Exploring Physical and Biological Manifestations of Burnout and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Healthcare Workers: A Scoping Review Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has strained the mental and physical well-being of healthcare workers (HCW). Increased work-related stress and limited resources has increased symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in this population. Stress-related disorders have been strongly associated with long-term consequences including cardiometabolic disorders, endocrine disorders and premature mortality. This scoping review aims to explore available literature on burnout, PTSD, and other mental health-associated symptoms in HCW to synthesize relationshi

Promoting transparency, reproducibility, and rigor: Medical teacher launches registered reports.

Concerns about research integrity, reproducibility, and publication bias have prompted calls for greater transparency and rigour across the scientific process. In response, Medical Teacher is the first health professions education journal to adopt Registered Reports. This new section involves peer review of study rationale, methods, and analysis plans before data collection, with publication decisions based on methodological rigor rather than study outcomes. Only confirmatory research requiring hypothesis testing will be accepted under Registered Reports. This approach helps reduce questionabl

A Rapid Evidence Assessment on The Effectiveness of Interventions for Autistic Adolescents with Harmful Sexual Behaviors.

The management and treatment of harmful sexual behaviors (HSBs) in autistic adolescents is a complex area of research and clinical practice. Autistic adolescents face unique challenges in understanding social and sexual interactions, putting them at a higher risk of engaging in HSBs. Existing research on interventions for HSBs among autistic adults is growing, but evidence for adolescents is not well understood. Thus, understanding the effectiveness of interventions targeting HSBs in autistic adolescents is crucial. We conducted a rapid evidence assessment to review peer-reviewed research on t

Expert recommendations for training peer workers to provide non-abstinent recovery support: A real-time Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Peer workers-nonclinical service providers with lived experience of recovery-are a growing sector of the substance use workforce whose professional practices are intertwined with their own personal recovery pathways. While research has documented stigma toward harm reduction among peers and the ways peers' attitudes affect their interactions with clients, little is known about effective strategies to prepare peers to serve people in non-abstinent recovery. This study used Delphi methodology to develop expert recommendations for training peers to provide non-abstinent recovery sup

Qualitative Ascriptions of Autistic Behavior by Non-Autistic College Students.

In studies that assess perceptions of autistic people by non-autistic people, researchers often ask participants to review vignettes depicting fictional autistic characters. However, few studies have investigated whether non-autistic peers accurately identify these hypothetical individuals as being on the autism spectrum. Accurately ascribing autism as a cause of depicted behaviors likely influences perceptions about autistic peers. In this study, 469 college students (Mage = 18.62; 79.3% female) ascribed cause(s) of an autistic peers' behaviors as depicted in a written vignette. We reviewed a

Women with disabilities' experience with physical and sexual abuse: review of the literature and implications for the field.

While studies suggest that the rate of abuse of women with disabilities is similar or higher compared to the general population, there continues to be a lack of attention to this issue. Women with disabilities are at particularly high risk of abuse, both through typical forms of violence (physical, sexual, and emotional) and those that target one's disability. In an effort to highlight the need for increased attention to this issue, this article reviews the current peer-reviewed research in this field. The authors outline recommendations for future research goals and provide implications for r

Wind turbines: is there a human health risk?

The term "Wind Turbine Syndrome" was coined in a recently self-published book, which hypothesized that a multitude of symptoms such as headache and dizziness resulted from wind turbines generating low frequency sound (LFS). The objective of this article is to provide a summary of the peer-reviewed literature on the research that has examined the relationship between human health effects and exposure to LFS and sound generated from the operation of wind turbines. At present, a specific health condition has not been documented in the peer-reviewed literature that has been classified as a disease

Educational article: what gets accepted for presentation?--a study of submitted abstracts for the 2009 BAOMS Conference.

The Annual Scientific Conference of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) provides an opportunity for colleagues to present papers to their peers, which can be beneficial both for professional development and for trainees to enhance their future career prospects. Each year far more abstracts are submitted than slots are available for oral presentation. These abstracts are reviewed by a paper selection committee, made up of several BAOMS colleagues. To our knowledge, there have not been any previous studies that have evaluated whether the type of study submitted (re

Enhancing care in alcohol-associated liver disease through peer support for alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) are interconnected conditions that contribute significantly to global morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in medical management, care for individuals with AUD and ALD remains suboptimal due to persistent gaps in psychosocial support, stigma, and limited integration between behavioral health care including AUD treatment services and hepatology. Peer support, emotional, informational, and practical assistance provided by individuals with lived experience, has emerged as a promising, though underutilized, strategy to addr
