Temporal tuning of continuous flash suppression for 3D objects reflects intrinsic dynamics of visual awareness.

Understanding how visual information gains access to conscious awareness is a central issue in cognitive neuroscience. Continuous Flash Suppression (CFS) provides a powerful method to investigate this transition by reliably suppressing visual stimuli from awareness. Previous work by Zhu, Drewes, and Melcher (2016) showed that mask frequency influences suppression strength of 2D stimuli, with a peak at 6 Hz. However, whether these findings generalize to more ecologically valid 3D stimuli, and whether CFS strength depends on the eye viewing the stimulus, remains unknown. In this study, we presen

Effects of sound source localization of masking sound on perception level of simulated tinnitus.

Tinnitus therapies have been combined with the use of varieties of sound/noise. For masking external sounds, location of the masker in space is important; however, effects of the spatial location of the masker on tinnitus are less understood. We aimed to test whether a masking sound location would affect the perception level of simulated tinnitus. The 4 kHz simulated tinnitus was induced in the right ear of healthy volunteers through an open-type earphone. White noise was presented to the right ear using a single-sided headphone or a speaker positioned on the right side at a distance of 1.8 m

Binaural sensitivity and release from speech-on-speech masking in listeners with and without hearing loss.

Listeners with sensorineural hearing loss routinely experience less spatial release from masking (SRM) in speech mixtures than listeners with normal hearing. Hearing-impaired listeners have also been shown to have degraded temporal fine structure (TFS) sensitivity, a consequence of which is degraded access to interaural time differences (ITDs) contained in the TFS. Since these "binaural TFS" cues are critical for spatial hearing, it has been hypothesized that degraded binaural TFS sensitivity accounts for the limited SRM experienced by hearing-impaired listeners. In this study, speech stimuli

Tinnitus Sound Therapy Trial Shows Effectiveness for Those with Tinnitus.

BACKGROUND: It is well accepted among clinicians that maskers and hearing aids combined with counseling are generally helpful to tinnitus patients, but there are few controlled studies exploring the efficacy of maskers alone to decrease the prominence of tinnitus. PURPOSE: We investigated the benefit of maskers for patients with chronic, bothersome tinnitus. RESEARCH DESIGN: Crossover single-participant design, where each participant served as their own control. STUDY SAMPLE: 18 adults with subjective, nonpulsatile, sensorineural tinnitus. INTERVENTION: Participants participated in two six

A double dissociation of the acuity and crowding limits to letter identification, and the promise of improved visual screening.

Here, we systematically explore the size and spacing requirements for identifying a letter among other letters. We measure acuity for flanked and unflanked letters, centrally and peripherally, in normals and amblyopes. We find that acuity, overlap masking, and crowding each demand a minimum size or spacing for readable text. Just measuring flanked and unflanked acuity is enough for our proposed model to predict the observer's threshold size and spacing for letters at any eccentricity. We also find that amblyopia in adults retains the character of the childhood condition that caused it. Amblyop

The effectiveness of clear speech as a masker.

PURPOSE: It is established that speaking clearly is an effective means of enhancing intelligibility. Because any signal-processing scheme modeled after known acoustic-phonetic features of clear speech will likely affect both target and competing speech, it is important to understand how speech recognition is affected when a competing speech signal is also spoken clearly. In 2 experiments, the authors investigated whether listeners would experience improved intelligibility when both target and nontarget speech were spoken clearly. METHOD: Listeners' recognition of sentences in competing sounds

Temporal integration in the gerbil: the effects of age, hearing loss and temporally unmodulated and modulated speech-like masker noises.

We characterized temporal integration for 2k Hz pure tones with durations between 10 and 1000 ms in young, normal hearing old and old gerbils with a small hearing loss. Thresholds determined in silence increased for durations below 300 ms and were on average more than 10 dB higher for the 10 ms signal than asymptotic thresholds for the long signals. The amount of temporal integration tended to be less in gerbils with hearing loss. Threshold determination was repeated in the same individuals in the presence of speech-like unmodulated and modulated masking noises. Threshold shift due to the mask

An examination of speech recognition in a modulated background and of forward masking in younger and older listeners.

PURPOSE: To compare speech intelligibility in the presence of a 10-Hz square-wave noise masker in younger and older listeners and to relate performance to recovery from forward masking. METHOD: The signal-to-noise ratio required to achieve 50% sentence identification in the presence of a 10-Hz square-wave noise masker was obtained for each of the 8 younger/older listener pairs. Listeners were matched according to their quiet thresholds for frequencies from 600 to 4800 Hz in octave steps. Forward masking was also measured in 2 younger/older threshold-matched groups for signal delays of 2-40 ms

How odgcrnwi becomes crowding: stimulus-specific learning reduces crowding.

Processes underlying crowding in visual letter recognition were examined by investigating effects of training. Experiment 1 revealed that training reduces crowding mainly for trained strings. This was corroborated in Experiment 2, where no training effects were obvious after 3 days of training when strings changed from trial to trial. Experiment 3 specified that after a short amount of training, learning effects remained specific to trained strings and also to the trained retinal eccentricity and the interletter spacing used in training. Transfer to other than trained conditions was observed o

Differential sensitivity to words and shapes in ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

Efficient extraction of shape information is essential for proficient reading but the role of cortical mechanisms of shape analysis in word reading is not well understood. We studied cortical responses to written words while parametrically varying the amount of visual noise applied to the word stimuli. In only a few regions along the ventral surface, cortical responses increased with word visibility. We found consistently increasing responses in bilateral posterior occipito-temporal sulcus (pOTS), at an anatomical location that closely matches the "visual word form area". In other cortical reg

Mechanisms of Sensitivity Loss due to Visual Cortex Lesions in Humans and Macaques.

This study represents the first use of noise masking and signal detection theory to examine mechanisms of visual loss after lesions of visual cortex. Noise-masked contrast thresholds were increased in 2 macaques and 2 humans at lesion-affected, compared with control, regions of their visual fields. Experiments suggested by the organization of visual cortex examined possible mechanisms of the visual loss. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that damage to feedback connections might eliminate the benefit of comparing test stimuli with remembered representations but neither could account for th

Masking mechanisms of bitter taste of drugs studied with ion selective electrodes.

The masking mechanisms of the bitter taste of propantheline bromide (PB) and oxyphenonium (OB) bromide by native and modified cyclodextrins, saccharides, surfactants, organic acids, nonionic and anionic polymers, and other compounds were investigated with ion selective electrodes. The intensity of the bitter taste for a mixed solution of cyclodextrin with PB or OB was quantitatively explained from the observed electromotive force with the following assumptions: the complex and the masking agent do not have any tastes and the bitter taste is independent of other tastes. Sodium dodecyl sulfate r

Perceptual consequences of cochlear hearing loss and their implications for the design of hearing aids.

This paper provides an overview of changes in the perception of sound that result from cochlear damage. It starts with a brief introduction to the physiology of the cochlea, emphasizing the role of the "active mechanism" and describing how cochlear function is altered by cochlear damage. Then the effects of cochlear damage on various aspects of perception are described, including absolute sensitivity, frequency selectivity, loudness perception and intensity discrimination, temporal resolution, temporal integration, pitch perception and frequency discrimination, and sound localization and other

Ipsilateral suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emission: role of the medial olivocochlear system.

Contralateral sound stimulation produces suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), which is attributed to a reflex activation of the medial olivocochlear system. More pronounced suppression of TEOAE produced by ipsilateral masking could involve efferent-mediated effects along with effects of cochlear origin. However, this has not been investigated so far. Therefore, changes of click-evoked OAE under ipsi- and contralateral forward masking by clicks and noise-bursts were investigated in an extremely long-lasting experiment in one normal-hearing volunteer. The reduction of TE

Masking, temporal integration, and sensorineural hearing loss.

This study was undertaken basically to examine the effect of white noise masking on temporal integration and how the frequency dependence of temporal integration is related to hearing loss. The threshold differences between 500-msec and 20-msec tones at .5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz were found for 147 ears of 86 subjects with normal hearing and with various amounts of cochlear hearing loss. Thresholds were measured in three levels of background white noise--30, 60, and 90 dB SPL. The principal finding was that temporal integration is frequency dependent and this dependence is not an epiphenomenon of the

Dependence of the temporary threshold shift on the immediately preceding exposure to noise.

Temporary threshold shift (TTS) measured immediately after exposure to noise here called TTSi, is surely more difficult to determine in audiological testing, than the usual TTS2, but in its dependence on the preceding exposure, it is useful in defining criteria for auditory fatigue, for damage and for normal adaptation to noise exposure of short durations. A few results selected from a study using improved methods of measuring TTSi confirm the point of view of others in defining regions and limits of normal hearing and auditory fatigue.

Perceptual consequences of disrupted auditory nerve activity.

Perceptual consequences of disrupted auditory nerve activity were systematically studied in 21 subjects who had been clinically diagnosed with auditory neuropathy (AN), a recently defined disorder characterized by normal outer hair cell function but disrupted auditory nerve function. Neurological and electrophysical evidence suggests that disrupted auditory nerve activity is due to desynchronized or reduced neural activity or both. Psychophysical measures showed that the disrupted neural activity has minimal effects on intensity-related perception, such as loudness discrimination, pitch discri

Practicing coarse orientation discrimination improves orientation signals in macaque cortical area v4.

Practice improves the performance in visual tasks, but mechanisms underlying this adult brain plasticity are unclear. Single-cell studies reported no [1], weak [2], or moderate [3, 4] perceptual learning-related changes in macaque visual areas V1 and V4, whereas none were found in middle temporal (MT) [5]. These conflicting results and modeling of human (e.g., [6, 7]) and monkey data [8] suggested that changes in the readout of visual cortical signals underlie perceptual learning, rather than changes in these signals. In the V4 learning studies, monkeys discriminated small differences in orien

The masking level difference in chinchilla auditory cortex. Effects of inner hair cell loss.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate responses from the unanesthetized chinchilla auditory cortex (AC) to conditions producing a masking level difference (MLD) in perceptual studies, both before and after inner hair cell (IHC) loss caused by carboplatin. Tungsten electrodes were chronically implanted in the right AC (active) and anterior cranium (common) in six adult chinchillas. Following a recovery period, AC responses were obtained from the unanesthetized animal placed in a passive restraint. Toneburst input/output functions were obtained. Tonebursts (500 Hz) ranged from 0 to
