Three immigrant patients are described with diffuse interstitial renal tuberculosis. Two had associated pulmonary tuberculosis and the third had tuberculous peritonitis. Excretion urography gave no clue to the diagnosis. At the time of diagnosis by renal biopsy two patients had severe chronic renal failure. In one, renal impairment had progressed during the course of anti-tuberculous treatment. The third patient showed marked fluctuations in renal function, and improvement appeared to relate to concomitant corticosteroid therapy. The importance of this particular form of renal tuberculosis has

BACKGROUND: Abdominal tuberculosis is an uncommon extra-pulmonary manifestation of tuberculosis.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: Herein, we report an unusual case of ruptured tuberculous mesenteric cold abscess, which was managed by laparotomy for diagnosis and drainage, and post-operative chemotherapy.
CONCLUSIONS: Peritoneal tuberculosis may present to surgeons as ascites, an abdominal mass, or peritonitis. Preoperative diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis is notoriously difficult. Acute peritonitis provoked by rupture of tuberculosis mesenteric cold abscess is exceedi

PURPOSE: The previous studies of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) have not focused on the impacts of diabetes mellitus. We conducted a retrospective study to explore the difference between EPTB patients with and without diabetes.
METHODS: The EPTB patients receiving initial treatments from Taipei Medical University Hospital between January 2003 and March 2008 were recruited. They were divided into with-diabetes (WD) group or non-diabetes (ND) group according to coexistence of diabetes mellitus or not, respectively. All characteristics of these two groups were compared.
RESULTS: Seventy-fiv

Pulmonary tuberculosis: primary tuberculosis, usually asymptomatic, represents the first infection and is shown by a parenchymal mostly mid-pulmonary focus and satellite lymphadenopathy. Postprimary pulmonary tuberculosis, mostly located in the upper fields may be caused by endogenous reinfection for reactivation of a hematogenous focus formed during primary infection or from exogenous reinfection. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: it includes numerous forms mostly from hematogenous spread. Miliary tuberculosis may involve a number of organs and apparatus besides the lung. Tuberculous meningitis pr

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis represents an increasing proportion of all cases of tuberculosis reaching 20 to 40% according to published reports. Extrapulmonary TB is found in a higher proportion of women, black people and immunosuppressed individuals. A significant proportion of cases have a normal chest X-Ray at the time of diagnosis. The most frequent clinical presentations are lymphadenitis, pleuritis and osteoarticular TB. Peritoneal, urogenital or meningeal tuberculosis are less frequent, and their diagnosis is often difficult due to the often wide differential diagnosis and the low sensit

BACKGROUND: Gastric body tuberculosis is extremely rare and easy to be missed or misdiagnosed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old female with tuberculous peritonitis was receiving formal antituberculosis treatment, the peritoneal and perihepatic nodules were absorbing during her regular follow-up, but contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen revealed a solid mass on the anterior gastric wall that had penetrated the gastric wall, review her previous enhanced CT scans, we found the gradual extension of an abdominal tuberculous lesion into the gastric wall, which was almost ignored. Endoscopic ult

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis and management of abdominal tuberculosis, i.e Gastrointestinal Tuberculosis (GITB) and tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) is challenging. Abdominal tuberculosis, presenting usually with abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, and constitutional symptoms, is typically a paucibacillary condition. The diagnosis hinges on a correct interpretation of clinical, radiological, histological, biochemical, and microbiological findings as also appropriately assessing response to therapy.
AREAS COVERED: The authors review potential missteps that could occur in managing GITB and TBP

Abdominal Tuberculosis represents 11-16% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and usually presents with vague abdominal symptoms that can mimic other diseases such as inflammatory bowel disorders, malignancy and sarcoidosis. Often the diagnosis is delayed and complications such as adhesions, obstruction, fistula or bleeding can occur. The common types are peritoneal and intestinal TB. Clinical findings should be complemented with appropriate imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT/MRI scan, barium roentgenograms and endoscopy. Due to the paucibacillary nature, the sensitivity of AFB smear, culture

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the modern world. Abdominal TB is a rare form of extrapulmonary TB that has been found to affect children without comorbidities in particular, although exact numbers are unavailable because of lack of data and its rarity. The diagnosis of abdominal TB remains a challenge because of its unspecific clinical features and unclear recommendations regarding the best diagnostic tools. We report 4 cases of children with abdominal TB diagnosed at The Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kaunas clinics from 2008

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal tuberculosis (TB) has always been a diagnostic challenge, even for the astute surgeon. In developing countries, extrapulmonary TB often presents as an acute abdomen in surgical emergencies such as perforations and obstructions of the gut. Abdominal TB in different forms has been found more often as an aetiology for the chronic abdomen. This paper aims to evaluate TB as a surgical problem.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on abdominal TB was undertaken. PubMed searches for articles listing abdominal TB/different types/diagnosis/treatment (1980-2012) wer

Introduction: Peritoneal tuberculosis (PT) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in children. The diagnosis is difficult because of its clinical polymorphism. Laparoscopy is the gold standard to make the diagnosis by exploring and performing peritoneal biopsies. Our aim was to show the place of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of PT, to compare the anatomopathological results of peritoneal biopsies with a macroscopic appearance to quick start antituberculosis treatment. Case Reports: We reported 4 patients with PT, 3 girls and 1 boy. The middle age was 9 years old. The revealing symptomato
