Criterion A: Level of personality functioning in the alternative DSM-5 model for personality disorders.

Criterion A, as represented by Level of Personality Functioning (LPF), offers a means by which to conceptualize the core impairment in self and interpersonal functioning that distinguishes personality disorder (PD) from other forms of psychopathology. One of the most widely cited criticisms of the current Section II in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition categorical diagnostic system is the high level of comorbidity among the categorical PD diagnoses. The Section III alternative Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition model for PDs …

Personality Disorders in Childhood: Validity of the Coolidge Personality and Neuropsychological Inventory for Children (CPNI).

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence has shown that maladaptive traits and emerging patterns of personality can be traced to an early stage of development and may be assessed in childhood. The goal of present study was to provide preliminary data on the validity of the Coolidge Personality and Neuropsychological Inventory for Children (CPNI), an instrument designed to assess personality pathologies and other clinical conditions in childhood. METHOD: A sample of 146 clinicians completed the CPNI, as well as the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to evaluate the behavioral problems and social co…

Comparing Simple Scoring With IRT Scoring of Personality Measures: The Navy Computer Adaptive Personality Scales.

This article analyzes data from U.S. Navy sailors (N = 8,956), with the central measure being the Navy Computer Adaptive Personality Scales (NCAPS). Analyses and results from this article extend and qualify those from previous research efforts by examining the properties of the NCAPS and its adaptive structure in more detail. Specifically, this article examines item exposure rates, the efficiency of item use based on item response theory (IRT)-based Expected A Posteriori (EAP) scoring, and a comparison of IRT-EAP scoring with much more parsimonious scoring methods that appear to work just as w…

Opinion: Which animals have personality?

Human personality generally refers to coherent individuating patterns in affect, behavior, and cognition. We can only observe and measure behavior, from which we then infer personality and other psychological processes (affect, cognition, etc.). We emphasize that the study of personality always explains or summarizes patterns not only in behavior but also in these other psychological processes inferred from behavior. We thus argue that personality should be attributed only to nonhuman animals with behaviors from which we can infer a sufficiently rich set of psychological processes. The mere in…

[Looking for borderline personality disorder].

AIMS: This paper aims to describe Roger Mulder's presentation on borderline personality disorder organized by the 23rd World Congress of Psychiatry, supplemented with relevant research results. METHODS: Mulder presents the diagnostic criteria of borderline personality disorder, its comorbidity, therapeutic considerations and the phenomenon of stigmatization related to the disorder. RESULTS: According to Mulder, the diagnostic criteria of borderline personality disorder are vague and it shows a very high comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders. Mulder draws attention to the fact that it …

Update on Antisocial Personality Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is a characterized by lifelong or recurrent behavioral problems that begin in childhood or early adolescence. This communication provides an overview on ASPD including findings from recent reviews and new research. RECENT FINDINGS: With regard to DSM-5's Section III Alternative Model of Personality Disorder criteria for ASPD, advocates point to the broader symptom coverage and harmonization with ICD-11; yet critics point to the lack of evidence for improved outcomes. A new report shows that antisocial individuals age faster than non-an…

Emotion Dysregulation in Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This manuscript aims to take stock of emotion dysregulation and personality disorder (PD) research, review key findings, and highlight future directions. RECENT FINDINGS: Most emotion dysregulation research in PDs has focused on borderline personality disorder (BPD). BPD is characterized by high baseline negative emotion and the use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies, but several other emotion dysregulation components may not be pervasively evident in the disorder. Trends in the BPD field that add nuance to the study of emotion dysregulation suggest that BPD may i…

[Personality functioning and physical health].

Objectives: Considering direct and indirect evidence of associations between deficits in personality functioning and high somatic morbidity, our exploratory study determined whether and, if so, which physical illnesses may be associated with impairments in personality functioning. Method: A large sample of diagnostically heterogeneous psychotherapy inpatients (N = 5401) was assessed with the short version of the Structural Questionnaire of the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis (OPD-SQS) and the Work Ability Index (WAI). In addition, discharge diagnoses were recorded. For a subsample (N =…

Humility, Personality, and Psychological Functioning.

As part of the shift to a more positive psychology, researchers have demonstrated a relatively new and intense fascination with humility. Following a discussion of this construct and its correlates, we investigate how humility relates to personality dimensions, anxiety and depression, love of life and happiness, and self-efficacy in two samples-college students and adult Mturk workers. In both studies, we used the Dual Dimension Humility Scale, a measure that does not conflate the construct with honesty. Among students (N = 399), aspects humility correlated with dimensions of personality (more…

Antisocial personality traits transcend species.

Antisocial personality is generally used to describe people who treat other people with callous disregard and disrespect. Although animal cruelty is diagnostic of conduct disorder, a precursor of antisocial personality in children, it is unclear whether the term antisocial also encompasses disregard and disrespect toward nonhuman animals among adults. In this study, we examined associations between three antianimal attitudes and behaviors-speciesism, hunting/fishing, and lack of sympathy for animal rights-and traits that underlie adult antisocial behavior. We found consistent links between ant…

Oxytocin and Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a prevalent and severe mental disorder with affect dysregulation, impulsivity, and interpersonal dysfunction as its core features. Up to now, six studies have been performed to investigate the role of oxytocin in the pathogenesis of BPD. While a beneficial effect of oxytocin on threat processing and stress responsiveness was found, other studies using an oxytocin challenge design presented with rather heterogeneous results. Future studies have to include a sufficiently large sample of patients, control for gender, and focus on mechanisms known to be rel…

Personality Variables and Eating Pathology.

Personality variables have long been implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders, as well as in symptom divergence between anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Clinical observations are broadly supported by the data, with restricting anorexia nervosa associated with higher levels of constraint and Persistence, and binge-purge behaviors linked to the tendency to take impulsive action when emotionally distressed. Considerable heterogeneity is found within diagnostic categories, however, suggesting that different personality structures may predispose individuals to develop disord…

Creativity, personality, and hoarding behavior.

Compulsive hoarding is a debilitating illness that is characterized by excessive collection of and failure to discard items, irrespective of their uselessness or hazardousness. Anecdotal evidence suggests that individuals who hoard may be more creative than individuals without hoarding behavior; however, this hypothesis has never been tested empirically. In the present study, we examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and performance on a series of creativity measures. We also explored the extent to which hoarding symptoms were associated with factors such as personality, impulsivi…
