Multifactorial conceptual model of cancer-related accelerated aging.

Evidence suggests that cancer-related accelerated aging contributes to an earlier onset of chronic diseases; persistent symptoms; and decrements in patients' quality of life. This review presents the Multifactorial Model of Cancer-related Accelerated Aging (MMCRAA), a conceptual framework that is grounded in Life Course Theory and supported by empiric evidence. The model includes six inter-related concepts: person, behavioral, biological, treatment, symptom, and life course factors. The MMCRAA can be used by clinicians and researchers to identify patients at increased risk for cancer-related a

Does the variance of personality traits change across the lifespan? A meta-analytic review of longitudinal studies.

Although personality traits are relatively stable compared to other constructs, comprehensive meta-analyses have shown that the mean levels and rank orders of personality traits change throughout the lifespan. In contrast, relatively little is known about whether and how the variance of personality traits develops with age. Examining changes in personality trait variance is, however, critical to contextualize knowledge on mean-level changes, to identify disruptive life phases, to evaluate changes in the predictive utility of personality traits, and to advance personality development theories.

Associations between maladaptive personality traits and neuropsychiatric symptoms in nursing home residents with mental-physical multimorbidity.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research showed high prevalences of maladaptive personality traits in nursing home (NH) residents with mental and physical multimorbidity (MPM). Our study aimed to identify if these maladaptive personality traits are associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in this population. METHODS: 142 residents with MPM (excluding dementia) were included, from Dutch gerontopsychiatric NH units. NPS were measured with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), analyzed in clusters: 'hyperactivity' (irritability, agitation/aggression, disinhibition), 'mood' (depression, anxiety, apat

Ergonomics and Personalization of Noninvasive Ventilation Masks.

Although noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is administered to manage respiratory failure due to various causes, safety and effectiveness issues associated with the use of NIV masks have been reported. The present article aims to provide health professionals with a comprehensive review of the ergonomic considerations of NIV masks in terms of design, evaluation, and personalization. Based on a review of 93 papers, we provide guidelines for mask selection and troubleshooting during mask use as well as ergonomic approaches including face anthropometry, sizing systems, mask design, evaluation, and pers

"More than eliciting goals: Provider competencies that enable patients to experience goal-oriented care, a dyadic qualitative study".

BACKGROUND: Goal-oriented care (GOC) has been proposed as a strategy for advancing person-centred integrated care by organising care around patients' personal goals. Although patients may experience empathic and trusting relationships with their providers, they often report that their personal goals are insufficiently integrated into care planning and follow-up. Providers likewise report a need for further training to implement GOC. However, evidence linking patient and provider perspectives within the same care relationship remains scarce, limiting insight into which competencies enable patie

Mumps Cases Disproportionately Affecting Persons Living with HIV Infection and Men Who Have Sex with Men - Chicago, Illinois, 2018.

During January 1-March 2, 2018, the number of mumps cases among adults reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) doubled compared with the same period in 2017. In response, CDPH created a supplementary questionnaire to collect additional information on populations affected and potential transmission routes. An epidemiologic analysis of routine and supplementary data, including spatiotemporal analysis, was performed to describe mumps cases reported to CDPH during 2018. A fourfold increase in mumps cases was reported during 2018 compared with 2017, with men who have sex with men

HIV incidence estimate combining HIV/AIDS surveillance, testing history information and HIV test to identify recent infections in Lazio, Italy.

BACKGROUND: The application of serological methods in HIV/AIDS routine surveillance systems to identify persons with recently acquired HIV infection has been proposed as a tool which may provide an accurate description of the current transmission patterns of HIV. Using the information about recent infection it is possible to estimate HIV incidence, according to the model proposed by Karon et al. in 2008, that accounts for the effect of testing practices on the number of persons detected as recently infected. METHODS: We used data from HIV/AIDS surveillance in the period 2004-2008 to identify

Electrographic cue-reactivity co-localizes with accumbens deep brain stimulation in a case of opioid use disorder.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a significant public health concern, with over 30% of the affected population not responding to available treatments. Severe OUD is characterized by drug-cue reactivity that has been reported to predict treatment failure. We leveraged this pathophysiological feature to optimize deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the nucleus accumbens region (NAc) in a male patient with OUD. A personalized drug-cue-reactivity task was administered while recording NAc electrophysiology from a lead externalized for clinical purposes. We identified a drug-cue-evoked electrophysiological s

Reliability associated with the abstraction of data from medical records for inclusion in an information system for persons with a traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents the intra- and inter-rater reliability associated with the extraction, from medical rehabilitation charts, of data to be included in a head injury information system currently under development. METHODS: A data collection form was developed to facilitate and standardize the data extraction. Two clinicians extracted information pertaining to 231 variables of the system from 15 charts of persons receiving rehabilitation services following a head injury. RESULTS: Average percentage agreement was high and did not vary from one category of variables to the other (

BACKGROUND: The Heatwave Plan for England provides guidance for personal and home protection measures during heatwaves. Although studies in the USA, Australia and Europe have surveyed heat-related behaviours during heatwaves, few have been conducted in the UK. This study assesses personal and housing (at-home) behaviour and housing characteristics of the UK population during the 2013 heatwave. METHODS: This paper analyses data from 1497 respondents of an online survey on heat protection measures and behaviour. Participants were asked questions about their behaviour during the 2013 heatwave, t

Use of Molecular Epidemiology to Inform Response to a Hepatitis A Outbreak - Los Angeles County, California, October 2018-April 2019.

Los Angeles County comprises 4,058 square miles and is home to approximately 10 million residents (1), an estimated 59,000 (0.6%) of whom experience homelessness on a given night (2). In late 2018, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) was notified of a case of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection in a person experiencing homelessness. LAC DPH conducted an investigation to determine the source of infection, identify additional cases, and identify contacts for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Over the next week, LAC DPH identified two additional hepatitis A cases in persons exper

Burnout as mediator between job demands and mental health in interpreters.

This study explored burnout as a mediator between job demands and mental health among Filipino sign language interpreters. Using data from 83 participants, parallel mediation analyses tested whether intrapersonal and interpersonal demands were associated with anxiety and depression through personal and work-related burnout, while controlling for age. Results indicated that intrapersonal demands were positively associated with personal burnout, which in turn was associated with higher anxiety and depression. In contrast, work-related burnout did not significantly mediate any pathways, and inter

Healthcare Interventions to Support Informal Caregivers of People With Severe Mental Illnesses: A Scoping Review.

In recent years, care for people with severe mental illnesses (SMI) has shifted from institutional to recovery-based treatment in which informal caregivers often have an important role. However, their increased involvement has elevated issues such as role strain or burden of care, which indicates that they need greater support. Adding to existing reviews, this study is intended to provide an overview of interventions that support informal caregivers who are tending to people with severe depression, anxiety or personality disorders other than borderline personality disorder (BPD). A scoping rev

The Role of Diagnostic Models in Prejudice Toward People With Borderline Personality Disorder: An Experimental Investigation.

We tested whether dimensional personality disorder models such as the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) cause less prejudice toward people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) than categorical models, and we sought to identify the mechanisms underpinning this reduction in prejudice. Undergraduate psychology students (n = 183) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (AMPD, categorical, control) and given descriptive information about BPD. Participants in the AMPD and categorical conditions also received a presentation about their respective BPD diagnostic criter

Hepatitis C Virus Transmission Clusters in Public Health and Correctional Settings, Wisconsin, USA, 2016-20171.

Ending the hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemic requires stopping transmission among networks of persons who inject drugs. Identifying transmission networks by using genomic epidemiology may inform community responses that can quickly interrupt transmission. We retrospectively identified HCV RNA-positive specimens corresponding to 459 persons in settings that use the state laboratory, including correctional facilities and syringe services programs, in Wisconsin, USA, during 2016-2017. We conducted next-generation sequencing of HCV and analyzed it for phylogenetic linkage by using the Centers for D

Generalized information criteria for personalized gene network inference.

Identifying individual genomic characteristics is a critical focus in personalized therapies. To reveal targets in such therapies, we considered personalized gene network analysis using kernel-based L 1 -type regularization methods. In kernel-based L 1 -type regularized modeling, selecting optimal regularization parameters is crucial because edge selection and weight estimation depend heavily on such parameters. Furthermore, selecting a kernel bandwidth that controls sample weighting is vital for personalized modeling. Although cross-validation and information criteria (i.e., AIC and
