Improving the relevance of randomised trials to primary care: a qualitative study investigating views towards pragmatic trials and the PRECIS-2 tool.

BACKGROUND: Pragmatic trials have been suggested as a way to improve the relevance of clinical trial results to practice. PRECIS-2 (Pragmatic Explanatory Continuum Indicator Summary-2) is a trial design tool which considers how pragmatic a trial is across a number of domains. It is not known whether a pragmatic approach to all PRECIS-2 domains leads to results being more relevant to primary care. The aim of this study was to investigate the views of people with influence on primary care practice towards the design of randomised trials, pragmatic approaches to trial design, and the PRECIS-2 dom

Cannabis use among Navy personnel in Sri Lanka: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of cannabis use among military populations vary. There is evidence that drug use is associated with combat exposure and PTSD. The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence of cannabis use among Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) personnel and to identify any relationship with cannabis use and combat exposure. METHODS: This cross sectional study was carried out among representative samples of SLN Special Forces (Special Boat Squadron) and regular forces deployed in combat areas. Both Special Forces and regular forces were selected using simple random sampling. Personnel who

[Representations of Mental Disorders and Employment Fit Perceived by Employers of the Regular Labour Market in France].

Introduction People with mental disorders face stigma and discriminatory hiring practices in the competitive labour market. This study on employers' representations of mental disorders provides knowledge regarding the specifics of their negative perceptions for this population, which appears to be an important barrier to their inclusion in the workplace. Heilman's lack of fit model (1983) enabled to show that recruiters seek to match the characteristics they perceive in candidates with those they deem necessary to succeed in the organization. A lack of fit between the two components-candidates

Accrual in supportive care trials in pediatric oncology, a challenge!

PURPOSE: Treatment protocols in pediatric oncology have historically known high accrual rates, up to 94 %. Accrual for supportive care studies on the other hand appears to be a challenge. The aim of this study was to search for reasons explaining this poor accrual and for possible interventions to improve patient enrolment. METHODS: The failure screen log of our supportive care study (the Aristocaths study) was analyzed, and subsequently, a literature search was performed. RESULTS: The literature search (1985-2011) revealed three factors that can influence accrual. Firstly, study implementat

Native American Representation and Diversity Initiatives Within Orthopaedic Surgery: An Update and Road Map to Success.

Orthopaedic surgery lags behind other specialties in terms of diversity. This lack of representation is especially evident within the Native American population. Native American/Alaskan Natives represent approximately 2.9% of the overall US population but comprise just 0.4% of orthopaedic surgeons within the United States. Currently, no Native American-specific orthopaedic inclusion or recruitment programs exist. There are a multitude of programs that exist to recruit Native American applicants into health care. These include pipeline programs and scholarships from the Indian Health Service (I

Racial differences in cardiothoracic surgery letters of recommendation.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiothoracic surgery lacks racial diversity. Attracting the best candidates requires valuing diversity and advancing a recruitment process that minimizes racial bias. Implicit bias in recommendation letters has been identified as an influential mechanism for lack of diversity in cardiothoracic surgery. We aim to investigate how applicant race impacts language used in cardiothoracic surgery fellowship recommendation letters. METHODS: We examined applications to an accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship program between 2017 and 2021. Recommendation letter authors were categor

A dynamic and collaborative approach to trial recruitment in safetxt, a UK sexual health randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recruiting to target in randomised controlled trials is crucial for providing reliable results, yet many trials struggle to achieve their target sample size. Many trials do not report sufficient, if any, details of their recruitment strategy for others to adapt for their own trials. Furthermore, much of the available evidence describes strategies to improve recruitment aimed at participants, as opposed to strategies aimed at engaging and motivating recruiting staff who are deemed essential for recruitment success. The safetxt trial aimed to recruit 6250 participants, aged 16-2

Targeted recruitment of optimal donors for unrelated hematopoietic cell transplantation: The Stem Cell Club process.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Patients in need of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation often cannot find a suitable HLA-matched donor in their families and rely on unrelated donors. Individuals can register with their country's donor registry either online or at a stem cell drive by providing consent and a tissue sample for typing. METHODS: Stem Cell Club is a donor recruitment organization in Canada that recruits Canadians as stem cell donors. This article outlines the Stem Cell Club's protocol for donor recruitment at stem cell drives including five core components: prescreening, informed consen

Could recruiting former college athletes be the answer to less pharmacy student burnout?

INTRODUCTION: Student pharmacists are in a notable wellness deficit. Pharmacy organizations are issuing statements and providing resources addressing efforts to increase student wellness. This commentary suggests that institutions refocus recruiting efforts on students with experience balancing the demands of school, wellness, and mental health. PERSPECTIVE: The purpose of this commentary is to start the conversation on increasing efforts to recruit candidates who already possess the resilience needed to perform in pharmacy school, with a focus on former college athletes. This piece in no way

An exploratory study assessing relations of demographic characteristics with police recruits' attitudes toward abuse of children and abusive parents.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess the relationships of demographic characteristics with attitudes toward abusive parents and abused children in a convenience sample of 183 police recruits. Police academy training staff invited recruits to complete a questionnaire which contained three vignettes and a 36-item questionnaire that depicted child neglect, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and demographic information. Analysis of responses showed that African Americans and Latinos reported more negative attitudes of anger, disgust, sadness, and discomfort toward an abusive parent than

The impact of ratee's disability on performance judgments and choice as partner: the role of disability-job fit stereotypes and interdependence of rewards.

An experiment assessed the impact of disability-job fit stereotypes and reward interdependence on personnel judgments about persons with disabilities. Students (N = 87) evaluated 3 confederates. The experiment varied disability of the target confederate (dyslexia vs. nondisabled), task, and dependence of rater rewards on partner performance. Two disability-task combinations represented stereotypical poor fit and good fit. Dependent variables were performance evaluations, performance expectations, and ranking of target as a partner. There was negative bias against the confederate with dyslexia

Increasing the pool of minority providers.

The University of Arkansas has trained African-American medical students for 46 years. Today the school continues to place a high premium on recruiting and retaining minority medical students. Recruitment efforts involve comprehensive programs to target junior high schools in African-American communities throughout Arkansas, and initiatives to attract African-American faculty and residents. Through such retention-oriented activities as lenient first-year grade requirements, study groups, and a board-preparation course, African-American students have scored above the national average on Part I

A simple system for the assessment of trachoma and its complications.

A simple grading system for trachoma, based on the presence or absence of five selected "key" signs, has been developed. The method was tested in the field and showed good observer agreement, the most critical point being the identification of severe cases of the disease. It is expected that the system will facilitate the assessment of trachoma and its complications by non-specialist health personnel working at the community level.

Efficacy of self-administration of medication abortion for first trimester of pregnancy in Ethiopia: A multicenter prospective cohort study.

Medical abortion with mifepristone and misoprostol, or misoprostol alone, can be safely administered in clinics or self-managed at home up to nine weeks of gestation. We conducted a prospective multi-center cohort study among women and girls seeking pregnancy termination at six purposively selected healthcare facilities or medication abortion dispensers in Hawassa City, Southern Ethiopia, from March 16, 2024, to January 15, 2025. We grouped the participants in two cohorts: self-administration of medication abortion (exposure group) and health-personnel provided medication abortion care (contro

Converting From Paper to Electronic Charting for a Nurse-Led Programme Serving High-Risk Postpartum Women and Infants in Malawi.

INTRODUCTION: Governmental and non-governmental organisations in low-income countries have transitioned from paper data collection to electronic data collection at a slower pace than those in high-income countries due to limitations of funding, internet stability and trained personnel, among other reasons. This paper chronicles the process employed by one small non-governmental organisation in Malawi from the selection of a programme through implementation, describing challenges and successes along the way in order to facilitate the adoption process for NGOs in sub-Saharan Africa or other low-
