Feasibility of a Centralized, Pharmacy-Led Penicillin Allergy Delabeling Program.

BACKGROUND: Penicillin allergy labels are often inaccurate in children and removing unnecessary labels results in improved outcomes and lower health care costs. Although the hospital setting is a frequent point of contact for children, strategies to evaluate penicillin allergies in the hospital are lacking. METHODS: We performed a prospective pilot study to determine the feasibility of a centralized, pharmacy-led approach to penicillin allergy evaluation. Children with a reported history of penicillin allergy admitted to our children's hospital were risk-stratified and those stratified as low…

Hospital Pharmacy in the multidisciplinary team of COVID inpatient units.

Since the implementation of the Antimicrobial Therapy Optimization Programme, hospital pharmacy specialists have collaborated with infectious disease specialists on a regular basis in most hospitals in Spain.  Cooperation between these professionals ensures the integrated management of patients with infectious diseases and the appropriate use of antimicrobials in  hospitals. The COVID-19 pandemic forced hospital pharmacists to abruptly  suspend all their structured activities and concentrate on the health crisis.  Realtime information sharing between different medicine specialties is an  effec…

Mail-order pharmacy experience of veterans living with AIDS/HIV.

BACKGROUND: The VA system is the largest single provider of healthcare in the United States and to individuals infected with HIV specifically. Veterans Administration (VA) patients are required to obtain all chronic medications using the VA mail-order pharmacy system. OBJECTIVE: Drawing on Donabedian's Quality Improvement framework, this study sought to examine experiences that Veteran…

["Doliarina and iron powder": an important medicine at Peckolt Pharmacy].

The pharmacist Theodoro Peckolt was one of the most important figures in the history of the chemistry of natural Brazilian products. Like other nineteenth-century pharmacists in Brazil, he developed formulations and sold them at his pharmacy in Rio de Janeiro, and these enjoyed great prestige in the eyes both of the public and the medical community. The article discusses the relation between the illness originally called "opilação" (ancylostomiasis, or hookworm) and nineteenth-century treatment. It focuses especially on Peckolt Pharmacy's "Doliarina and iron powder," a formulation extracted fr…

Drug supply for psoriasis - results from a national pharmacy network.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, drugs are to a large extent provided by pharmacies. Thus, investigations in pharmacies permit drug usage studies both on patients receiving prescribable drugs and using self-medication. The current study evaluated the quality of medical care, disease burden and spectrum of treatments for patients with psoriasis in a nationwide network of pharmacies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in 61 pharmacies. Patients with psoriasis vulgaris who came to the pharmacy to obtain antipsoriatic drugs or basic ointments were consecutively recruite…

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: recent evidence and clinical pharmacy applications.

Conventional office blood pressure readings are a well-established surrogate for the prediction of cardiovascular risk. It is assumed that these readings reflect an underlying average level of blood pressure exposure occurring in an individual over a period of time. But because blood pressure is not static, important additional prognostic information about the diurnal blood pressure profile, including within-day and between-day variability, is not easily ascertained from conventional measurements. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring provides a more thorough depiction of the underlying blood p

Preprofessional curriculum in preparation for doctor of pharmacy educational programs.

The preprofessional pharmacy curriculum provides the foundation for the professional curriculum. Basic requirements are noted in the ACPE Standards and Guidelines, but there is considerable variation in the preprofessional curriculum requirements for entry into doctor of pharmacy programs in the United States. Changes in higher education, pharmacy practice, and health care continue to drive the need to evaluate the preprofessional curriculum. The objectives of this white paper were to create model preprofessional curricula that would enable students to be successful during and after entry into…

Outcomes of patients discharged from pharmacy-managed cardiovascular disease management.

OBJECTIVES: To identify sex effects and preclinical serum biomarker associations with both incident rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its subsequent mortality, using a 41-year, community-based, case-control cohort. METHODS: After cohort entry in 1974, incident RA cases (n=54) had clinical onsets between 1977 and 1994. Cohort control (CN) subjects were individually matched on entry to cases (4 CN:1 RA, n=216). All subjects were followed for survival from 1995 through 2015. Ranks (1-5) of preclinical z-scores within each set of 1 RA and 4 matched CN were analysed for associations with incident RA a
