School programmes in drug rehabilitation and social reintegration in the Philippines.

In recognition of the role of education in the process of the social reintegration of drug-dependent persons, the Dangerous Drugs Board, the Philippines' highest policy-making and co-ordinating body on all matters pertaining to drug abuse control, the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, and other drug-rehabilitation centres have jointly initiated and are implementing a formal school programme at the secondary level, within the confines of rehabilitation centres. Thus far, a built-in school programme has been established in the three rehabilitation centres existing in the country, from…

Isolation of Japanese encephalitis virus from the Republic of the Philippines.

A total of 33, 274 mosquitoes was collected from Tagudin, Ilocos Sur Province, Philippines during July 1977. Isolates made from one pool of Culex tritaeniorhynchus and one pool of C. vishnui were identified as Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) by a micro-neutralization test using reference hyperimmune mouse ascitic fluids. This is the first known isolation of JEV from the Philippines.

Biomedical survey in North Samar Province, Philippine Islands.

A biomedical survey was carried out in North Samar Province, Philipines to update information on the prevalence of parasitic and other infectious diseases. A total of 1,394 stool specimens, 1,859 blood smears and 1,274 sera were collected from persons living in 8 barrios. Stools were examined for intestinal parasites, bloods smears for malaria and filariasis and sera tested for antibodies to Schistosoma japonicum, Entamoeba histolytica, Toxoplasma gondii, influenza A and B, and Japanese encephalitis virus. The prevalence rates for intestinal parasites were: Trichuris trichiura 90%, Ascaris lum

Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis after Measles Outbreaks, the Philippines, 2007-2022.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a delayed, almost uniformly fatal complication of measles. The Philippines had measles outbreaks in 2010-2011, 2013, and 2018-2019; the last was the largest in the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region. Published SSPE data from the Philippines end in 2015. We reviewed all 20 children admitted with SSPE to a tertiary pediatric hospital in Quezon City during 2007-2022 and estimated year of measles infection. Median patient age was 6.2 years at hospital admission and 0.7 years at reported measles illness. Five (25.0%) of 20 admissions occur…

Antibiotic Susceptibility Monitoring of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Bacolod City, Philippines.

A local study was conducted to monitor the antibiotic susceptibility of N. gonorrhoeae in Bacolod City, Philippines. A total of 88 isolates were taken during the period of 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2017, from male patients ages 12 to 72 years. The highest incidence of gonorrhea infection was in the group aged 20⁻24 years (34.09%). The susceptibility pattern to antibiotics was as follows: ceftriaxone 100%, cefixime 82.6%, spectinomycin 92.1%, ciprofloxacin 4.9%, tetracycline 5.1%, and penicillin G with 0%. All isolates were noted to produce beta-lactamase, which can be attributed to plasmid-med…

Cryptosporidium species from common edible bivalves in Manila Bay, Philippines.

Manila Bay is one of the major propagation sites of edible bivalves in the Philippines. Studies have shown that bivalves might be contaminated with human pathogens like the protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium, one of the major causes of gastroenteritis in the world. In this study, Cryptosporidium from four species of edible bivalves were isolated using a combination of sucrose flotation and immunomagnetic separation. Using direct fluorescent antibody test, Cryptosporidium oocysts were found in 67 out of 144 samples collected. DNA sequence analysis of the 18S rRNA gene of the isolates detected C…

Thelazia rhodesii (Desmarest, 1828) infections in cattle in Mindanao, Philippines.

Thelazia rhodesii was found in the eyes of 149 of 643 bovine heads (23%) that were examined at the abattoir of Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, during the period February 1994 to February 1995. In nearly half of the animals both eyes were infected and an average of 4.1 worms per infected animal was recovered. Of the 1286 eyes examined, 17% were infected; worm burdens ranged from one to 36 (average 2.9) worms per infected eye. Monthly prevalence of infection ranged from 13% to 36%. T. rhodesii infection was significantly more common in cattle of more than 3 years of age (25%) than in younger a…

Insecticide use and increased mortality in rural Central Luzon, Philippines.

In a major rice-growing area of the Philippines, widespread adoption of insecticides by farmers on smallholdings was followed by a 27% increase in mortality from causes other than trauma among economically active men. Several factors suggest a causal link: highly toxic chemicals have been used unsafely; mortality has increased only in the age and sex class occupationally exposed; mortality has decreased among unexposed urban men; specific mortality rates have increased for those conditions likely to be confused with insecticide poisoning and have decreased for others; and, both within and betw…

Risk Factors Affecting Morbidity and Mortality in Open Repair of Infrarenal Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: A Retrospective Cohort Study in the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the treatment outcomes of patients who underwent open repair of infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and to determine the risk factors affecting morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Data were obtained from patients with infrarenal AAAs who underwent open surgical repair at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) from January 2013 to October 31, 2023. These patients' demographic and clinical profile, and treatment outcomes were evaluated using frequencies and percentages. Student's t-test and chi-square test were used for the inferentia…

Molecular identification of heterophyids in human stool samples from the Philippines.

The family Heterophyidae includes endoparasitic minute intestinal flukes that are primarily transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish, causing heterophyidiasis. Several heterophyid species have been reported to infect humans in the Philippines. Heterophyidiasis is diagnosed by detection of parasite ova in stool samples through Kato-Katz stool microscopy, but species identification is challenging due to the morphologically similar eggs of different heterophyid species and other minute intestinal flukes such as Clonorchis and Opisthorchis. This study addresses the need for a…
