BACKGROUND: The extent to which educational attainment (EA) influences the risk of varicose veins (VVs), venous thromboembolism (VTE), and phlebitis occurrence, whether this pathway is mediated by obesity-related traits, and the proportion of their mediation is unknown.
METHODS: A Mendelian randomization (MR) design was used to genetically investigate the causal effects of EA on the risk of VV, VTE, and phlebitis and to assess the mediating effect of obesity-related traits. Causal effects were estimated using primarily the multiplicative random-effects inverse variance-weighted method. This w…

BACKGROUND: As cardiac surgery is complicated, time-consuming, and traumatic, it may cause great damage to the patient's body. Therefore, postoperative indwelling venous catheters are required for hemodynamic monitoring and rapid fluid replenishment. Intravenous catheterization infection can easily lead to phlebitis, which not only affects the success of the operation and patient recovery but may also lead to death in severe cases. Good perioperative care is key to reducing postoperative infection in patients, and the choice of dressings for patients with catheterization plays an important rol…

BACKGROUND: Vinorelbine (VNR) is a key chemotherapeutic agent for treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, peripheral venous administration frequently induces phlebitis in 20-50% of patients. A previous study showed that applying a hot compress during VNR was effective in patients who had already developed symptoms. Therefore, this method was applied to all patients receiving VNR via peripheral venous administration at Hokkaido University Hospital. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the prophylactic efficacy of hot compresses for VNR-induced phlebitis in real-world settings.
METHODS: P…

The main histopathological features in the cutaneous lesions of Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) are dermal leukocytoclastic vasculitis with a variable eosinophilic infiltrate and non-vasculitic tissue eosinophilia with granuloma formation. This wide histopathological spectrum may account for the various skin manifestations of CSS. However, the unique histopathological combination of dermal eosinophilic vasculitis and subcutaneous granulomatous phlebitis accompanied by bulla formation has not been previously described. We report an unusual CSS case showing dermal necrotizing eosinophilic vasculiti…

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVC) are essential medical devices, yet they frequently lead to complications such as phlebitis, infiltration, and occlusion. Identifying risk factors is key to reducing these complications.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence of PIVC‑associated phlebitis in Spanish hospitals and identify clinical and epidemiological risk factors.
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study in 80 Spanish hospitals from 1 to 28 February 2023. Adult inpatients (≥18 years) receiving PIVCs in non‑ICU, non‑emergency, non‑pediatric wards were eligible. A total …

BACKGROUND: Hypertonic saline (HTS) is used for hyperosmolar therapy in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) but is traditionally administered via central venous catheter to minimize vascular complications. Procedural burden and urgency often necessitate peripheral administration in practice. We investigated phlebitis risk associated with peripheral 11.7% HTS in AIS patients requiring hyperosmolar therapy.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 200 AIS patients receiving hyperosmolar therapy with mannitol (January 2022-December 2024), classified into an HTS group (n=67) receiving additional periph…

BACKGROUND: Peripheral venous catheter use is a common healthcare practice and carries risk for peripheral venous catheter-related phlebitis (PVCP). The aims of this study were to develop a machine learning model using inpatient hospital data to accurately predict the risk of PVCP and apply this model for early identification to reduce the risk of PVCP in the department of Cardiology. METHODS: A prediction model was developed to estimate the risk of developing PVCP within 3–24 h after introduction during a clinical admission in the department of Cardiology. Data of 107.419 generic hospital cli…

Peripheral venous catheters (PVC) are often used to provide hydration, medications, and blood products when the length of therapy is expected to be less than 1 week. Pain and phlebitis are frequent complications of PVC. Diclofenac and EMLA have been used to minimize these adverse effects; however, conflicting results have been reported regarding which has better outcomes. This double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of EMLA and Diclofenac (TDP) in attenuating PVC pain and phlebitis. The inpatient setting was chosen because of the higher frequency of PVC …

In five women (mean age 58 [31-74] years) with clinically diagnosed varicose phlebitis of the long saphenous vein appositional thrombus growth was demonstrated by serial ultrasonography (B-mode compression and colour-coded duplex sonography). In one patient the appositional thrombus was found to be free-floating as far as the common femoral vein, but this was not seen by phlebography. During therapeutic heparinization there was ultrasonographic evidence of softening and partial liquefaction of thrombus material in a cranial direction. There were no clinical signs of pulmonary embolism, but pul…
