Psoriasis is a common skin disease which may be treated with 8-methoxy psoralen and long-wave ultraviolet light (PUVA). Eye protection is provided during and after treatment to prevent the development of photokeratitis and cataracts. Fifteen patients, treated with medication and ultraviolet A (UVA) had an initial complete eye examination and a repeat examination after each treatment. No patients developed cataracts but almost one-half of the patients had a mild form of photokeratoconjunctivitis. The ocular manifestations included photophobia, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and dry eyes. Tear break…

UNLABELLED: We describe a new surgical technique of femtosecond-assisted keratopigmentation (KTP) in a 23-year-old woman with severe visual dysfunction secondary to unilateral essential iris atrophy due to the presence of iridocorneal endothelial syndrome in her left eye. The patient presented with complaints of photophobia and monocular diplopia in the affected eye. Femtosecond-assisted KTP surgery was performed in this eye. Following the procedure, the patient reported complete elimination of photophobia and diplopia, with an excellent cosmetic result. Follow-up of 12 months was unremarkable…

Cranioectodermal dysplasia (CED) is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by defects of ectoderm-derived structures and characteristic bone anomalies. We report on a 27-month-old Caucasian girl with CED, pre- and postnatal growth retardation, microcephaly, hypoplasia of the posterior corpus callosum, photophobia, and aberrant calcium homeostasis. Since new traits were encountered, we reviewed all reported patients and one unpublished case and compared the frequency rates of the individual manifestations. The findings present in all patients are dolichocephaly and rhizomelia. Ectoderma…

BACKGROUND: The recognition of food as the trigger of attacks occurs in approximately 25% of individuals with migraine. However, differentia … a and excessive use of analgesics were more frequent among patients with food triggers (p = 0.022). Photophobia and osmophobia were associated with the presence of a food trigger (p < 0.001). There was a greater impact of migraine in the presence of food triggers (p = 0.002). Through binary logistic regression, we identified clinical predictors of food trigge …

Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD) is a rare X linked disease which is characterised by follicular hyperkeratosis of the skin and corneal dystrophy. Seven male patients and six female carriers are described. Special attention has been paid to the dermatological and ophthalmic markers of KFSD in patients and carriers. The most prominent features present in the male patients were follicular hyperkeratosis, hyperkeratosis of the calcaneal regions of the soles, scarring alopecia of the scalp, absence of eyebrows and eyelashes, and corneal dystrophy accompanied by photophobia. They a…

BACKGROUND: Estimates of proportions of people with migraine who report premonitory symptoms vary greatly among previous studies. Our aims were to establish the proportion of patients reporting premonitory symptoms and its dependency on the enquiry method. Additionally, we investigated the impact of premonitory symptoms on disease burden using Headache Impact Test (HIT-6), Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) and World Health Organization Disability Assessment 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0), whilst investigating how various clinical factors influenced the likelihood of reporting premonitory symptoms.

The majority of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are classified as having a mild TBI. Despite being categorized as mild, these individuals report ongoing and complex symptoms, which negatively affect their ability to complete activities of daily living and overall quality of life. Some of the major symptoms include anxiety, depression, sleep problems, headaches, light sensitivity, and difficulty reading. The root cause for these symptoms is under investigation by many in the field. Of interest, several of these symptoms such as headaches, ocular pain, light sensitivity, and sleep dis

A 4-month-old female maltese dog was admitted to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University for evaluation of abnormal color of bilateral irises. This patient had the photophobia in the light and exhibited the complete absence of pigment resulting in white hair, pink muzzle, eyelids and foot-pads. Central zone of the irises were yellow in color influenced by tapetal reflex, and peripheral zone were pale blue. The iridal capillaries were transparented on the irises. Ophthalmoscopic examination revealed a yellow tapetal fundus but no pigment in the nontapetal fundus.

Oculocutaneous albinism comprises hereditary disorders in which there is a congenital absence or reduction of melanin in the skin, hair and eyes, coupled with nystagmus, photophobia and reduced visual acuity. The body is unable to make melanin (a compound derived from the metabolism of tyrosine) due to the functional absence of the enzyme tyrosinase. The disease is transmitted as an autosomal recessive character. In man, there are six conditions distinguishable in relation to their frequency, and their clinical, biochemical, ultrastructural, and genetic characteristics. The attempt to identify…

PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome comprises a whole-field static-like visual disturbance, with increased awareness of entopic phenomena, an inability to suppress the 'just seen' and photophobia. Visual snow syndrome is often associated with other problems such as headache, tinnitus, and anxiety. The earliest reported case of a patient experiencing symptoms consistent with visual snow syndrome dates only to 1995. This paper seeks to find patterns of experience in the medical literature of the past that are reminiscent of visual snow syndrome, to challenge the view that it is in any sense a novel di…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the literature on the clinical characteristics of the symptoms other than headache that occurs during a migraine attack in childhood and adolescence.
RECENT FINDINGS: Premonitory symptoms (42-67%) and postdrome phase (82%) are frequent. The most frequent auras were visual. There was no association between age or sex and the occurrence of auras. Cranial autonomic symptoms are also frequent (40-70%) and are most often bilateral. Most studies suggest that age is not associated with the frequency of nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phonophobia. Cephalic cutaneous al…

BACKGROUND: Visual Snow Syndrome is a recently recognized neurological condition presenting, continuous, tiny dots across the entire visual field, accompanied by nyctalopia, photophobia and palinopsia that persist for months. It may be part of migraine aura spectrum, yet its definition is still questionable. Diagnostic criteria for Visual Snow Syndrome are included in the supplemental material of ICHD-3. We aimed to summarize recent data to improve the understanding of Visual Snow Syndrome.
METHODS: After presenting four new cases, we conducted a PRISMA systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE and…

The IFAP syndrome is a rare X-linked recessive inheritance disorder with defect of the MBTPS2 gene defined by the triad of follicular ichthyosis, alopecia, and photophobia. A total of 40 cases has been reported, but no correlation with Hodgkin lymphoma has been reported yet. A 3.5-year-old boy was diagnosed with IFAP syndrome confirmed by Next Generation Sequencing. He was on regular follow-up when he developed prolonged fever and lymphadenopathy. His lymph node biopsy showed Hodgkin lymphoma with mixed cellularity subtype. This case is the first report on IFAP syndrome associated with maligna…

Photophobia is in many cases linked to pathologies of the anterior segment of the eye, e.g. cataract or iritis. We report an unusual case of increased light sensitivity due to a compressing lesion of the chiasm. Pituitary adenomas are among the most frequent intracranial tumours and can affect the chiasm - the site where all the visual afferences meet. A lesion of the chiasm is therefore particularly dangerous. Fortunately, in two-thirds of all cases, pituitary adenomas lead to hormonal dysfunction, so that magnetic resonance imaging of the brain is conducted. However, in the remainder of the …
