Cardiovascular Physiology of Sauropods.

Dinosaurs dominated terrestrial ecosystems for more than 160 million years under fluctuating atmospheric conditions that profoundly shaped their cardiovascular physiology. Evidence from phylogenetic bracketing, fossil morphology, and comparative models with crocodilians, birds, and mammals suggests that many dinosaurs possessed a fully separated four-chambered heart capable of sustaining high systemic pressures and efficient oxygen (O2) transport. In sauropods, extreme vertical distances between the heart and brain required arterial pressures exceeding those of any extant vertebrate, raising q

The morphology of prehatching embryos of Caecilia orientalis (Amphibia: Gymnophiona: Caeciliidae).

The state of development of advanced embryos of the direct-developing Ecuadorian caecilian Caecilia orientalis (Caeciliidae: Gymnophiona: Amphibia) was examined. Because it is established that development is correlated with reproductive modes in a number of features, we included comparison with taxa that represent the major reproductive modes and all of the modern normal tables and ossification sequences. The embryos of C. orientalis most closely resemble those of stage 47/48 Gegeneophis ramaswamii, an Indian caeciliid, and stage 47/48 Hypogeophis rostratus, a Seychellian caeciliid, both direc

The functions of the thymus.

In rodents the thymus performs at least two functions. It is a major site of lymphopoiesis in the embryo and newborn, with the resulting lymphocytes migrating from the thymus to seed the spleen, lymph nodes and other lymphoid organs. In addition, the thymus produces a hormone which has an immunotrophic effect, i.e. it endows cells having immunological potential with immunological competence. In some animals other organs, in addition to the thymus, are responsible for directing the normal development of the immunological system. These are the bursa of Fabricius in birds and the appendix in rabb

One Embryology: impactful connections between human- and wildlife-assisted reproduction.

PURPOSE: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in humans have evolved from early experimental work into a globally established clinical field, with animal research providing the foundation for their development and continuous refinement. This review examines the reciprocal relationship between human and animal ART and considers how a broader "One Embryology" framework may benefit both reproductive medicine and wildlife conservation. METHODS: The historical and contemporary connections between human, domestic animal, and wildlife ART are reviewed, with particular consideration of comparativ

The diving reflex and asphyxia: working across species in physiological ecology.

Beginning in the mid-1930s the comparative physiologists Laurence Irving and Per Fredrik (Pete) Scholander pioneered the study of diving mammals, particularly harbor seals. Although resting on earlier work dating back to the late nineteenth century, their research was distinctive in several ways. In contrast to medically oriented physiology, the approaches of Irving and Scholander were strongly influenced by natural history, zoology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. Diving mammals, they argued, shared the cardiopulmonary physiology of terrestrial mammals, but evolution had modified these bas

Chinese alligator genome illustrates molecular adaptations.

In the September issue of Cell Research, Wan et al. analyze the Chinese Alligator genome and identify multiple instances of positively-selected changes in protein-coding genes and expansions of multi-gene families that appear to explain suites of phenotypes central to the unique habits and physiology of crocodilian reptiles. They demonstrate the effectiveness of comparative systems genomics in integrating information from comparative genomics, molecular evolution, and systems biology to understand the evolutionary dynamics of complex systems.

The facial skeleton of the chimpanzee-human last common ancestor.

This review uses the current morphological evidence to evaluate the facial morphology of the hypothetical last common ancestor (LCA) of the chimpanzee/bonobo (panin) and human (hominin) lineages. Some of the problems involved in reconstructing ancestral morphologies so close to the formation of a lineage are discussed. These include the prevalence of homoplasy and poor phylogenetic resolution due to a lack of defining derived features. Consequently the list of hypothetical features expected in the face of the LCA is very limited beyond its hypothesized similarity to extant Pan. It is not possi

[Types of apraxia of the articulation apparatus in afferent motor aphasia].

On the basis of the comparative data on physiology and psychology of speech, as well as applied and comparative linguistics, it is known that apraxia of articulation apparatus in patients with afferent motor aphasia is heterogenous. The study of 3 groups of patients with primary apraxia of either a tongue, lips, or pharynx and larynx allowed one to find that in persons whose native language is Russian, written speech, reading and understanding is disturbed to a lesser degree in primary apraxia of glotis and larynx that are not initial phonemoformation organs in the Russian language.

Energetics of thermoregulation by an industrious endotherm.

OBJECTIVES: Thermoregulation by modern industrial humans is unique among endothermic animals, in that it is largely accomplished by controlling the temperature of our external environment. The objective of this study was to view the relationship between thermoregulatory energy use and environmental temperature in modern humans from the perspective of comparative physiology. METHODS: Monthly residential energy use estimates from the US Energy Information Administration were divided by the annual number of American households from the US Census Bureau, giving average monthly energy consumption

Krogh's principle for musculoskeletal physiology and pathology.

August Krogh was a comparative physiologist who used frogs, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and horses in his research that led to his Nobel Prize on muscle physiology. His idea to choose the most relevant organism to study problems in physiology has become known as Krogh's principle. Indeed, many important discoveries in physiology have been made using naturally occurring animal models. However, the majority of research today utilizes laboratory mouse and rat models to study problems in physiology. This paper discusses how Krogh's principle can be invoked in musculoskeletal research as a complementa

Locomotion of sponges and its physical mechanism.

Active locomotion by individual marine and freshwater sponges across glass, plastic and rubber substrata has been studied in relation to the behavior of the sponges' component cells. Sequential tracing of sponge outlines on aquarium walls shows that sponges can crawl up to 160 microns/hr (4 mm/day). Time-lapse cinemicrography and scanning electron microscopy reveal that moving sponges possess distinctive leading edges composed of motile cells. Sponge locomotion was found to be mechanically similar to the spreading of cell sheets in tissue culture both with respect to exertion of traction (whic

Metabolic Bone Disease in Captive Flying Foxes: A Conceptual Framework and Future Perspectives.

In Pteropus spp., metabolic bone disease has been consistently associated with fruit-based diets that are deficient in calcium, vitamin D precursors, and protein, as well as limited ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure, as reported in zoological surveys and clinical observations. Comparative mammalian physiology suggests that dysregulation of the endocrine axis involving parathyroid hormone (PTH), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), calcitonin, and calcitriol may contribute to disease development, although direct species-specific endocrine data in flying foxes remain scarce. This narrative review syn

Virulence factors and strategies of Leptopilina spp.: selective responses in Drosophila hosts.

To ensure survival, parasitic wasps of Drosophila have evolved strategies to optimize host development to their advantage. They also produce virulence factors that allow them to overcome or evade host defense. Wasp infection provokes cellular and humoral defense reactions, resulting in alteration in gene expression of the host. The activation of these reactions is controlled by conserved mechanisms shared by other invertebrate and vertebrate animals. Application of genomics and bioinformatics approaches is beginning to reveal comparative host gene expression changes after infection by differen
