Perceptual changes with monopolar and phantom electrode stimulation.

Phantom electrode (PE) stimulation is achieved by simultaneously stimulating out-of-phase from two adjacent intra-cochlear electrodes with d … traditional scaling suggests that the single dimension is place pitch. PE stimulation elicits lower pitch perceptions in all cochlear regions. Analysis of Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) data suggests that PE stimulation may be more effective at the apical part of the cochlea. PE stimulation can be used for new sound coding strategies in order to extend the p …

Absence of auditory 'global interference' in autism.

There has been considerable recent interest in the cognitive style of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). One theory, that of weak central coherence, concerns an inability to combine stimulus details into a coherent whole. Here we test this theory in the case of sound patterns, using a new definition of the details (local structure) and the coherent whole (global structure). Thirteen individuals with a diagnosis of autism or Asperger's syndrome and 15 control participants were administered auditory tests, where they were required to match local pitch direction changes between two

Atypical pattern of discriminating sound features in adults with Asperger syndrome as reflected by the mismatch negativity.

Asperger syndrome, which belongs to the autistic spectrum of disorders, is characterized by deficits of social interaction and abnormal perception, like hypo- or hypersensitivity in reacting to sounds and discriminating certain sound features. We determined auditory feature discrimination in adults with Asperger syndrome with the mismatch negativity (MMN), a neural response which is an index of cortical change detection. We recorded MMN for five different sound features (duration, frequency, intensity, location, and gap). Our results suggest hypersensitive auditory change detection in Asperger

Cortical plasticity in an early blind musician: an fMRl study.

Many studies have examined tactile perception and simple auditory perception in the blind, but none have previously investigated the neural basis of musical ability in this group. This topic is of particular interest because it has been suggested that early blind individuals may possess advanced musical skills (such as absolute pitch). Presumably, these skills could be the result of neural plasticity. It has been hard to empirically assess this claim because of the difficulty in recruiting an adequate number of subjects for use in a conventional paradigm. In the present paper, we report data f

Misperception of body verticality in neurological disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The internal representation of verticality could be disturbed when a lesion in the central nervous system (CNS) affects the centers where information from the vestibular, visual, and/or somatosensory systems, increasing the risk of falling. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the vestibular and somatosensory contribution to the verticality pattern in patients with stroke and other neurological disorders. METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL databases. Cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies comparing body verticality

[Influence of overtones and undertones on melody recognition with a cochlear implant with SSD].

Many cochlear implant (CI) users have difficulties recognising pitches and melodies because pitch transmission is blurred and shifted. This study investigates whether postlingually deafened adult CI users recognize melodies better when overtones are removed or undertones are added.Fifteen unilaterally postlingually deafened CI users (single sided deafness = SSD) were included aged 22 to 73 years (MW 52, SD 11.6) with CI hearing experience between 3 and 75 months (MW 33, SD 21.0) with varying MED-EL devices. Three short piano melodies were presented to them firstly to the normal-hearing ear and

Stimulating the Cochlear Apex Without Longer Electrodes: Preliminary Results With a New Approach.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a new surgical and signal processing technique that provides apical stimulation of the cochlea using a cochlear implant without extending the length of the electrode array. PATIENTS: Three adult patients who underwent cochlear implantation using this new technique. INTERVENTIONS: The patients received a cochlear implant. The surgery differed from the standard approach in that a ground electrode was placed in the cochlear helicotrema via an apical cochleostomy rather than in its typical location underneath the temporalis muscle. Clinical fitting was modified such tha

Cortical hemisphere preference and brainstem ear asymmetry reflect experience-dependent functional modulation of pitch.

Temporal attributes of pitch processing at cortical and subcortical levels are differentially weighted and well-coordinated. The question is whether language experience induces functional modulation of hemispheric preference complemented by brainstem ear symmetry for pitch processing. Brainstem frequency-following and cortical pitch responses were recorded concurrently from Mandarin and English participants. A Mandarin syllable with a rising pitch contour was presented to both ears with monaural stimulation. At the cortical level, left ear stimulation in the Chinese group revealed an experienc

Auditory frequency selectivity in normal and presbycusic subjects.

Auditory frequency selectivity was inferred from measurements of the detectability of tonal signals as a function of the cutoff frequency of a low-pass computer-generated noise masker. In Experiment I the effect of small changes in signal-to-noise ratio on inferred auditory frequency selectivity was studied. In Experiment II, frequency selectivity was determined for five normal-hearing subjects and four subjects with sensorineural hearing loss due to presbycusis. Critical ratios (signal-to-noise ratio at masked threshold) also were determined in Experiment II. The results of Experiment I indic

Associations between the Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) and self-report of voice femininity and acoustic voice measures.

BACKGROUND: The Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) was designed to capture the voice-related perceptions of individuals whose gender identity as female is the opposite of their birth-assigned gender (MtF women). Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the TVQMtF is ongoing. AIMS: To investigate associations between TVQMtF scores and (1) self-perceptions of voice femininity and (2) acoustic parameters of voice pitch and voice quality in order to evaluate further the validity of the TVQMtF . A strong correlation between TVQMtF scores and self-ratings of voice femininity was predicte

Feminine after cricothyroid approximation?

A number of studies have evaluated the effectiveness of a cricothyroid approximation (CA) in creating a more female voice in male-to-female transsexuals (MFTs) from an acoustic perspective. An increase in pitch is of little value, however, unless it accurately indicates listeners' perceptions of gender. The purpose of this study was to further investigate the effectiveness of a CA in feminizing the voice from a perceptual perspective. Video recordings of nine MFTs, nine nontranssexual males (NTMs), and nine nontranssexual females (NTFs) were presented twice to the panel of judges in a randomiz

Characteristics of auditory agnosia in a child with severe traumatic brain injury: a case report.

We present a case that is unusual in many respects from other documented incidences of auditory agnosia, including the mechanism of injury, age of the individual, and location of neurological insult. The clinical presentation is one of disturbance in the perception of spoken language, music, pitch, emotional prosody, and temporal auditory processing in the absence of significant deficits in the comprehension of written language, expressive language production, or peripheral auditory function. Furthermore, the patient demonstrates relatively preserved function in other aspects of audition such

Auditory stream segregation in dyslexic adults.

Developmental dyslexia is often associated with problems in phonological processing based on, or accompanied by, deficits in the perception of rapid auditory changes. Thirteen dyslexic adults and 18 control subjects were tested on sequences of alternating tones of high (1000 Hz) and low (400 Hz) pitch, which at short stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) led to perceptual separation of the sound sequence into high- and low-pitched streams. The control subjects perceived the tone sequence as connected down to SOAs of 130 ms, with segregation of the streams at shorter SOAs; in dyslexic subjects the

Enhancing Acoustic Voice Quality Through Real-Time Auditory Feedback Modulation.

Auditory feedback modulation (AFM)-altering how speakers hear their own voice during phonation-is a well-established method for investigating vocal motor control. Healthy speakers typically respond to AFM with compensatory vocal adjustments in the opposite direction of the perturbation, such as lowering pitch in response to upward pitch shifts. However, whether degradations in voice quality within auditory feedback elicit comparable compensatory behavior-specifically, vocal adjustments that enhance acoustic voice quality-remains unknown. To address this gap, the present study pursued two aims:

Assessment of cyclodisparity-induced slant perception with a synoptophore.

PURPOSE: To evaluate with a synoptophore slant perception induced by binocular cyclodisparities in normal subjects and to argue for the possibility of abnormal slant perception in patients with cyclo-vertical strabismus. METHODS: A vertical line with cyclodisparities that ranged from 0 degrees to +/- 10 degrees was presented to 17 normal subjects (mean +/- SD age, 28.4 +/- 5.6 years; 11 men and 6 women) with a synoptophore, and the perceived slant of the line in the pitch plane was measured by a matching method. Cyclodisparity thresholds for top-away and top-forward slants were also evaluated

The Relationship Between Pitch Discrimination and Acoustic Voice Measures in a Cohort of Female Speakers.

BACKGROUND: Evidence across a range of musically trained, hearing disordered and voice disordered populations present conflicting results regarding the relationship between pitch discrimination (PD) and voice quality. PD characteristics of female speakers with and without a musical training background and no self-reported voice disorder, and the relationship between PD and voice quality in this particular population, have not been investigated. AIMS: To evaluate PD characteristics in a cohort of female participants without a self-reported voice disorder and the relationship between PD and aco

Breathy voice and low-register: A case of trading relation in Shanghai Chinese tone perception?

In Shanghai Chinese as well as many other Wu dialects, breathy voice is a well-documented accompaniment of the low-register tone syllables with obstruent as well as sonorant onsets. But Shanghai Chinese is rapidly changing and the breathy voice associated with low-register tones tends to disappear in young speakers' productions. In this study, we asked whether breathy voice is nevertheless still perceived and whether it pushes tone identification toward low-register tones. We conducted forced-choice tone identification tests on young native listeners of Shanghai Chinese, using low-high registe

Lexical tone recognition with spectrally mismatched envelopes.

It has been shown that frequency-place mismatch has detrimental effects on English speech recognition. The present study investigated the effects of mismatched spectral distribution of envelopes on Mandarin Chinese tone recognition using a noise-excited vocoder. In Experiment 1, speech samples were processed to simulate a cochlear implant with various insertion depths. The carrier bands were shifted basally relative to the analysis bands by 1-7 mm in the cochlea. Nine normal-hearing Mandarin Chinese listeners participated in this experiment. Basal shift of the carriers only slightly affected t

Hearing loss in the chinchilla from impact and continuous noise exposure.

The relative hazard posed to the peripheral auditory system by impact/impulse and continuous noise of the same power spectrum was determined. Impact noise was generated by striking a nail with a hammer and was digitally recorded. The acoustical power spectrum of the impact was determined and pink noise was filtered to produce a continuous noise stimulus with the same acoustic power spectrum. Pre-exposure auditory evoked response (AER) thresholds were obtained at 1, 2, 4, and 8 kHz on 16 adult chinchillas. The pool of animals was divided into two equal groups based upon pre-exposure AER thresho
