Testing or Trusting? Urine Cotinine Levels in Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative laboratory examinations are a common practice throughout all surgical disciplines. Smoking prior to and shortly after elective aesthetic surgery is generally discouraged, but abstinence is rarely examined. Nicotine's major metabolite is cotinine, which is distributed in various body fluids, including blood, saliva, and urine. Urine cotinine levels are a useful short-term marker of nicotine exposure, whether active or passive, and correlate with daily tobacco use. Urinary levels are precise, rapid, easy to examine, and accessible. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this literature

A new perspective in oculoplastic surgical management of symptomatic distichiasis in lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome.

Lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LDS) is an autosomal dominant condition associated with FOXC2 mutations. Patients with distichiasis are mostly symptomatic, and efforts to deal with their ocular complaints comprise of electrolysis, cryotherapy and a variety of surgical techniques. We describe an enhanced surgical technique for a case of symptomatic distichiasis of the right eye with scarred, irregular eyelid margins secondary to initial cryotherapy, whereby the distorted tarsus was excised to remove the aberrant hair follicles, the levator palpebrae superioris was released to extend the upper

Leonard Furlow and Plastic Surgery: A Bibliographic Review.

BACKGROUND: The contributions of Leonard Furlow to plastic surgery were made over 6 decades, influencing the fields of cleft palate repair, flexor tendon healing, and reconstructive transplantation. Beyond surgical technique, his essays on surgical pioneers and reflections on specialty evolution underscore his belief in plastic surgery as a discipline driven by innovation and intellectual curiosity. METHODS: To construct this narrative, we reviewed the publications of Furlow and identified developments of his ideas and their applications. RESULTS: Over the length of his career, Furlow made s

Ergonomics in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Understanding effective ergonomic interventions is crucial for enhancing occupational health and career longevity. There is a paucity of clear ergonomics guidelines in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS), placing practitioners at high risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and their consequences. RECENT FINDINGS: There is mounting evidence that FPRS specialists are at increased risk of WMSDs as compared with the public and other surgical specialties. Numerous studies have demonstrated that implementation of ergonomics principles in surgery decre

Subtractive thinking: A novel combined application of antihelix reconstruction and outer helix reconstruction to treat mild cases of type I to II conchal microtia.

BACKGROUND: The management of mild cases of type Ⅰ to Ⅱ conchal microtia involves grafting cartilage to the affected ear to increase the cartilaginous area and transfer more skin to cover the larger cartilage. Herein, we performed a novel combined surgical procedure based on "subtractive thinking" that included antihelix reconstruction and outer helix reconstruction that was successful in patients with mild type I to II conchal microtia. METHODS: From January 2018 to September 2022, 65 patients with mild, unilateral, type I to II conchal microtia were enrolled in this study. All patients were

An Update on Level of Evidence Trends in Facial Plastic Surgery Research.

Background: Knowledge of the quality of evidence in facial plastic surgery research is essential for the implementation of evidence-based practices. The purpose of this study is to provide an update over the past decade as to whether the level of evidence in leading journals featuring topics in facial plastic surgery has changed in comparison with prior reports. Materials and Methods: This study is a systematic review, designed to evaluate the level of evidence observed in the facial plastic surgery literature over time. Five journals were queried using facial plastic surgery keywords for four

Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in Craniofacial Reconstruction and Facial Aesthetics.

The craniofacial region is anatomically complex and is of critical functional and cosmetic importance, making reconstruction challenging. The limitations of current surgical options highlight the importance of developing new strategies to restore the form, function, and esthetics of missing or damaged soft tissue and skeletal tissue in the face and cranium. Regenerative medicine (RM) is an expanding field which combines the principles of tissue engineering (TE) and self-healing in the regeneration of cells, tissues, and organs, to restore their impaired function. RM offers many advantages over

Factors Important in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program Selection.

Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS) training programs offer exceptional exposure to the most current techniques in the field. However, applicants have many factors to weigh when ranking programs. Therefore, it is important to examine the factors that applicants believe to be the most critical when choosing an FPRS fellowship. This is an anonymous online survey of FPRS fellows between the years 2018 and 2020 (total 147). Respondents were asked to rate importance of program factors on a Likert scale (1-5). Of 147 applicants, 63 (43%) responded. Applicants found the type of practice,

[The interdisciplinary Microsurgeon - Results of the Consensus Workshop of the German Speaking Society for Microsurgery of Peripheral Nerves and Vessels].

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. Although Plastic surgery offers a wide range of reliable surgical treatment options independent departments for plastic and reconstructive surgery are not present in every university clinic or leading hospital in Germany. However, the ongoing improvements especially in the field of reconstructive microsurgery enabled and enhanced the treatment of complex defects in order to restore function as well as cosmetic outcome. Knowing the fact that patients are usually referred from other medical disciplines t

Treatment of severe postburn kyphosis with combined plastic surgery and milwaukee bracing.

STUDY DESIGN: A case is reported in which severe postburn kyphosis is treated with combined plastic surgery and Milwaukee bracing. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate that severe kyphosis can develop secondary to burn scars and that spine surgery can be avoided. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Nothing is available in the literature on this subject. METHODS: A 14-year-old boy had severe burns of the arms, anterior neck, and anterior torso with a resulting 90 degrees stiff kyphosis. RESULTS: The patient was treated by multiple plastic surgery procedures combined with a Milwaukee brace, which corrected hi…
