The purpose of this study was to determine whether regional poison centers handle a particular poisoning situation better than nonregional centers do. Informed consent was obtained from 15 regional and 15 nonregional poison centers. A case involving salicylate ingestion by a three-year-old child was presented twice (one day call and one night call) to each center. Those answering the phone at the regional centers asked more information-gathering questions than did those at the nonregional centers (P less than 0.01) and were more proficient in their history taking (P less than 0.01). Little is known about the use or misuse of cleaning products during the COVID-19 pandemic. We compiled data from January to June in 2019 and 2020 from Canadian poison centres, and report on calls regarding selected cleaning products and present year-overyear percentage change. There were 3408 (42%) calls related to bleaches; 2015 (25%) to hand sanitizers; 1667 (21%) to disinfectants; 949 (12%) to chlorine gas; and 148 (2%) to chloramine gas. BACKGROUND: Poison centers are faced with the escalating costs of specialist staffing and increased investments in hardware and databases despite deficit funding. We developed an automated fax information system to access poison information from any fax machine without special training or equipment.
METHODS: We provided a 3-month trial service of the fax system in conjunction with the regular operator-based service and analyzed the fax access log, followed by a questionnaire to the 2204 affiliate members regarding the use of the fax.

We aimed to make an exhaustive assessment of circumstances of bites by exotic reptiles bred in France. A retrospective observational study was conducted in all the reported cases from 2000 to 2020 in French poison control centers (PCCs). Two hundred and eighteen cases of bites were recorded. Owing to the complex metabolism of salicylates, both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia have been reported with salicylate poisoning. The aim of this study was to characterize this relationship. Data from the Illinois Poison Center were retrospectively queried over a 5-year period (2008-2012), and patients with a salicylate concentration ≥30 mg/dL were included. Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia were defined as glucose concentrations <55 and >140 mg/dL, respectively. Of the 160 patients included, most were normoglycemic (81%) and 19% were hyperglycemic. This study analyzes the characteristics of accidental poisoning among children and young adolescents (< 15 years) in Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil, in 2001. A collaborative study of 273 treated poisonings at three regional poison control centers showed a significant decrease in salicylism from 19% of all cases in 1970 to 9% in 1975 and 11% in 1980.
