The second violence: Police responses to family violence as a public health exposure.

OBJECTIVES: This paper contributes to a broader survivor-led program of research on second violence: the institutional reproduction of harm through systems formally designed to respond to violence. Within that broader program, the paper focuses on one police station encounter to examine how police contact can operate as a modifiable public health exposure in family and domestic violence response. STUDY DESIGN: Survivor-led autoethnographic case study. METHODS: Data were drawn from The Second Violence, a four-year, ethics-approved autoethnographic study documenting lived experience of navigat…

The impact of routine traffic encounters that include procedural justice on police perceptions.

OBJECTIVES: Despite procedural justice in police-citizen interactions being widely studied, there is limited research regarding police perceptions of these interactions. This study addresses this by exploring police perceptions of two different types of random breath test (RBT) - standard and procedurally just - in an experimental trial. Officers were asked to report on whether they believe that their RBT interaction with drivers and riders changed behaviour, developed more positive perceptions of police and resulted in slower travel. Additionally, they were asked if they thought that the RBT …

Vicarious Exposure to Police Discrimination and Brutality, Concern, and Changes in Cigarette Smoking.

INTRODUCTION: Police discrimination and brutality (PDB) disproportionately impacts racial and/or ethnic minority groups. However, it remains unclear how vicarious exposure to PDB varies in the USA and how it relates to concern and cigarette smoking across racial and/or ethnic groups. METHODS: Data were from a survey conducted in January-February 2021 with a US nationally representative sample of adults (≥ 21 years) who reported current and recent former (within the past 12 months) commercial tobacco use (n = 1700). Associations among self-reported vicarious exposure to PDB, concerns about PDB…

Turning gold into lead: The troubling fate of the police drug diversion initiative.

INTRODUCTION: This paper explores the fate of South Australia's highly regarded Police Drug Diversion Initiative over the past 10 years. METHODS: The paper uses historical and legal analysis, including publicly available data as to rates of drug use, arrests and diversions, media reports, legislation and Hansard debates. RESULTS: In the mid-2010s, amidst growing anxiety about levels of amphetamine-type stimulants use in Adelaide, a coroner's report became the poster child for what was seen by the Liberal opposition as the excessive leniency and 'waste of resources' of the Police Drug Diversi…

Help-Seeking From Websites and Police in the Aftermath of Technology-Facilitated Victimization.

This study looked at experiences of help-seeking from websites and police following an episode of technology-facilitated abuse. It used data from a nationally representative online panel of adults aged 18 to 28, sampled from Ipsos Knowledge Panel. A total of 1,952 unique victimization episodes from childhood and adulthood were identified and used in analyses. Participants were asked about whether they experienced 11 different types of technology-facilitated abuse (TFA), whether the incident was reported to the website or police, barriers to reporting, and features of the website's or law enfor…

Police in the rearview mirror: Social marginalization, trauma, and fear of being killed.

An online sample of 528 people was asked to respond to a hypothetical scenario: If a police car came up right behind you with its lights flashing, how much would you worry that you would be killed? Participants also reported on whether they experienced aggressive behavior by police in the past (provoked or otherwise) and, if so, completed a measure of associated posttraumatic stress. At least some fear of being killed by police (FKP) in the rearview mirror scenario was reported by the majority (56%) of Black participants, 39% of those self-describing as "other or mixed" race, and 31% of Hispan…

The Effect of Direct and Vicarious Police Contact on the Educational Achievement of Urban Teens.

In response to changes in policing practices, scholarship has increasingly begun to explore whether police contact has negative implications for youth. A small subset of scholarship has examined the implications of police contact for educational outcomes. This research has generally focused on serious police contact (arrest, court involvement, and incarceration) and has found that police contact is associated with worse educational outcomes. In this paper, we build on this research in three ways: 1) By differentiating between arrests and stops that do not result in arrest; 2) By examining the …

A longitudinal analysis of the spatial spread of police-investigated physical child abuse.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that problematic behaviors, such as violence and drug use, may spread through shared physical space and social norms, lending rise to the notion of contagion theories of human behavior. OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether physical child abuse spreads across time and space in a pattern reflective of a contagion model. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study uses 15 years of data from a large U.S. city police department. Data points are geo-located police-investigated physical child abuse incidents that occurred from 2001 to 2015. METHODS: Police department data…

Social avoidance in policing: Associations with cardiovascular disease and the role of social support.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to examine the association of social avoidance among police, cardiovascular disease (CVD) (metabolic syndrome (MetSyn)), and social support. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Participants were officers from the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress study (n = 289). Social avoidance (defined as the tendency to avoid social contact) and other subscales from the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale were analyzed. The mean number of MetSyn components across tertiles of the Cook-Medley scales was computed using analysis of variance and analysis of covariance. …

Effectiveness of current policing-related mental health interventions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There are three commonly used mental health interventions associated with policing: liaison and diversion, street triage and having specialist staff embedded in police contact control rooms. Crisis intervention teams (CITs), already used in the USA, are now attracting wider interest, including in the UK. Investment in these interventions is growing, so it is important to have evidence of their effectiveness. AIM: To conduct a systematic literature review to answer questions about effectiveness of police-mental health service models for responding to people with mental disorder and…

Mental health outreach and street policing in the downtown of a large French city.

CONTEXT: Marseille, the second largest city in France, has a large population of homeless persons. A mental health outreach team was created in 2005 as a response to high rates of mental illness among this group. In a national political context where security is a government priority, a new central police station was created in Marseille in 2006 to address robberies, violence and illegal traffic in the downtown area of the city. While not directly related to such crimes, police also are responsible for public safety or behavioral issues related to the presence of individuals who are homeless i…

The impact of personal threat on police officers' responses to critical incident stressors.

The relationship of type of critical incident (CI) stressor with peritraumatic responses and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms was examined in police. Officers (N = 662) provided narratives of their most distressing CI experienced during police service and completed measures of related peritraumatic responses and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. Narratives were reliably rated (kappa = .80-1.0) on seven categories emerging from a series of factor analyses of a measure of critical incident stressors. Additional analysis revealed that the classification of primary narrative features r…

The mental health needs of people with a learning disability detained in police custody.

Few research studies examine the prevalence or mental health needs of people with a Learning Disability (LD) detained in police custody. This paper describes the population of detainees with an LD who presented to an inner city inter-agency police liaison service during a three-year period. Two forensically trained Community Mental Health Nurses (CMHNs) screened all custody record forms (n=9014) for evidence of a mental health problem or LD. The CMHNs interviewed positively screened detainees (n=1089) using a battery of measures designed to assess mental health status, risk-related behaviour a…

The bust card: policing, race, welfare, drugs, and the counterculture in 1960s Britain.

Bust cards first emerged in the late 1960s as a way of obtaining help following arrest, giving the user the number of a 24-h telephone line to call on arrival at the police station. In the 2020s, such cards were used by direct action groups involved in civil disobedience campaigns, but tracing bust cards back reveals that their original purpose was different. The bust card was a novel way of enabling an individual to push back against the immediate experience of hostile policing, while enabling organizers to collate information on what was happening. By foregrounding the object and examining i…

Driving the prevention of low back pain in police officers: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Police officers spend a lot of time at work seated in a patrol car. Being seated for hours can cause low back pain (LBP) and is documented as sedentary behaviour, and the risk of work injuries related to LBP grows for police officers as a result of equipment and individual factors. This can result in an increase in health and safety costs for organizations and has a negative impact on quality of life. This systematic review 1) evaluated the risks associated with police patrolling while considering external factors that could influence a police officer's well-being and 2) identifi…

Analysis of the geographic pattern of the police reports for domestic violence in Girona (Spain).

BACKGROUND: There are many studies that address the issue of gender-based violence, but few analyse the police-reported cases. It is as important to analyse the temporal and geographic distribution of these incidents as it is the sociodemographic profile of the accuser. To this effect, the present study aims to analyse the sociodemographic profile of the victims of the particular case of domestic violence that report the incident to the police and to evaluate the spatial-temporal distribution of these reports. METHODS: Using the data from a database containing the police-reported incidents of…
