A case report of rapidly progressing cauda equina symptoms due to rheumatoid arthritis.

Although rheumatoid involvement of the lumbar spine is relatively rare, we report a patient with rapidly progressing cauda equina symptoms due to rheumatoid diskitis. A 72-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of motor weakness below the iliopsoas muscle and sensory disturbance beneath the level of L2. Plain X-ray films, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated destruction of the L2/3 intervertebral disc and endplates with subluxation of the facet joints. The dural sac was compressed. Based on a diagnosis of spinal canal stenosis due to rheumatoid diskitis

[Miller Fisher syndrome: report of a case].

The authors report a case of a 27 year old male patient who has exhibited external ophthalmoplegia, anisocoria, ataxia, absent deep reflexes, dysphagia, dysphonia, bilateral peripheral facial paralysis, hypopallesthesia and a mild sensory impairment of the four extremities. In addition, his cerebrospinal fluid showed albuminocytologic dissociation. The otoneurologic examination showed important findings. These symptoms began ten days after a "cold", and quickly subsided after prednisone therapy. Two months after the onset of clinical features, just a deep apendicular areflexia was detected on

Porphyric neuropathy.

The hepatic porphyrias are a group of rare metabolic disorders characterized by enzymatic defects in the biosynthesis of heme, a metalloporp … roximal predilection of asymmetric weakness, and electrodiagnostic findings indicative of an axonal polyradiculopathy or neuronopathy all suggest the diagnosis of porphyria. Confirmation of the diagnosis depends on use of appropriate laboratory studies. The underlying pathophysiology of porphyric neuropathy has not been established, but it may be related to direct …

[Bell's palsy in HIV infection].

Neurological complications represent one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with HIV infection or AIDS. The … disease, when there is a severe immunodeficiency, usually is secondary to opportunistic infections, polyradiculopathy, or tumors involving the nervous system. To our knowledge, in the current literature there are few clinical studies reporting facial palsy associated to HIV infection. Since 1986 till 1992 three HIV infected patients with Bell's palsy have come to o …

Functional Impairments and Rehabilitation Outcomes of Patients With Immunotherapy-Induced Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy, Myasthenia Gravis, and Myositis.

Immunotherapy has led to a higher survival rate among different oncological disease groups but also associated with adverse-related events in multiple organ systems. Immunotherapy-related musculoskeletal weakness often results in a loss of cancer survivors' physical function, ultimately impacting their independence and quality of life. This is a retrospective study of 24 cancer patients who were treated with immunotherapy either alone or in conjunction with other oncological treatments. Twelve subjects (50%) were found to have acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculopathy/Guillain-Barré s…

Paralytic squint due to abducens nerve palsy: a rare consequence of dengue fever.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is an endemic illness in the tropics with early and post infectious complications affecting multiple systems. Though neurological sequelae including mononeuropathy, encephalopathy, transverse myelitis, polyradiculopathy, Guillain-Barre syndrome , optic neuropathy and oculomotor neuropathy have been reported in medical literature, the abducens nerve despite its notoriety in cranial neuropathies in a multitude of condition due to its long intracranial course had not been to date reported to manifest with lateral rectus paralysis following dengue. CASE PRESENTATION: A pr…
