Effects of chickens on the prevalence of infestation and population density of Triatoma infestans in rural houses of north-west Argentina.

Effects of the presence of chickens on population density of the bug Triatoma infestans, principal vector of Chagas disease, were investigated by standardized sampling (indoors and peridomestically) from sixty-eight houses of three rural communities in north-west Argentina, during March 1992. The domiciliary density of T. infestans increased linearly with the percentage of bugs that fed on chickens, as identified by agar double-diffusion tests. Bug density was significantly higher in houses where hens usually nested indoors than in those where they did not, as determined by concurrent direct o…

Modulation of the population density of identifiable epidermal Langerhans cells associated with enhancement or suppression of cutaneous immune reactivity.

The epidermis on the backs or ears of DBA/2 mice treated for 7 days with a 20% concentration of monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone (MBEH) had a significantly greater population density of ATPase- and Ia-positive cells compared with control mice treated with diluent. There was no decrease or increase in ATPase- or Ia-positive cells at sites distal from the treated tissue. This increase in population density of Langerhans cells was associated with a significant increase in functional afferent immune reactivity measured by allergic contact hypersensitivity. We also found evidence for enhanced effer…

Role of 2-phenylethanol in regulating population density and biocontrol efficacy of Scheffersomyces spartinae W9 via quorum sensing.

The marine antagonistic yeast Scheffersomyces spartinae W9 can significantly control gray mold in strawberries caused by Botrytis cinerea. 2-Phenylethanol (2-PE), a quorum sensing molecule, is also a volatile organic compound secreted by S. spartinae W9. Herein, we investigated the role of 2-PE in regulating the population density and biocontrol efficacy of S. spartinae W9. The results showed that 2-PE significantly increased the population density and biofilm formation ability of S. spartinae W9, and further enhanced its stress tolerance. 2-PE significantly enhanced the ability of S. spartina…

The clinical impact of estimating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) using different equations in the general population.

BACKGROUND: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Friedewald, Sampson, and Martin-Hopkins equations are used to calculate LDL-C. This study compares the impact of switching between these equations in a large geographically defined population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data for individuals who had a lipid panel ordered clinically between 2010 and 2019 were included. Comparisons were made across groups using the two-sample t-test or chi-square test as appropriate. Discordances between LDL measures based on clinically actionab

Chloroform associated with bone mineral density and bone mineral content in adults: A population-based cross-sectional research.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density is an important indicator of osteoporosis, and its variation with volatile organic compounds exposure has rarely been studied. However, the relationship between chloroform (an essential volatile organic compounds component) and bone mineral density remains unclear. Consequently, we aimed to explore the relationship between chloroform alone and bone mineral density or bone mineral content. METHODS: Herein, 2,553 individuals aged 18 and above from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) in 2009-2010, 2013-2014, and 2017-2020, were included

Wolbachia strain wAlbB maintains high density and dengue inhibition following introduction into a field population of Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying the wAlbB Wolbachia strain show a reduced capacity to transmit dengue virus. wAlbB has been introduced into wild Ae. aegypti populations in several field sites in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where it has persisted at high frequency for more than 2 years and significantly reduced dengue incidence. Although these encouraging results indicate that wAlbB releases can be an effective dengue control strategy, the long-term success depends on wAlbB maintaining high population frequencies and virus transmission inhibition, and both could be compromised by Wolbachia-host c

Modeling the effects of density dependent emigration, weak Allee effects, and matrix hostility on patch-level population persistence.

The relationship between conspecific density and the probability of emigrating from a patch can play an essential role in determining the population-dynamic consequences of an Allee effect. In this paper, we model a population that inside a patch is diffusing and growing according to a weak Allee effect per-capita growth rate, but the emigration probability is dependent on conspecific density. The habitat patch is one-dimensional and is surrounded by a tuneable hostile matrix. We consider five different forms of density dependent emigration (DDE) that have been noted in previous empirical stud

Genetic analysis identifies DDR2 as a novel gene affecting bone mineral density and osteoporotic fractures in Chinese population.

DDR2 gene, playing an essential role in regulating osteoblast differentiation and chondrocyte maturation, may influence bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis, but the genetic variations actually leading to the association remain to be elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the genetic variants in DDR2 are associated with BMD and fracture risk. This study was performed in three samples from two ethnicities, including 1,300 Chinese Han subjects, 700 Chinese Han subjects (350 with osteoporotic hip fractures and 350 healthy controls) and 2,286 US white subjec

Paresthesia-Free High-Density Spinal Cord Stimulation for Postlaminectomy Syndrome in a Prescreened Population: A Prospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) traditionally is thought to require paresthesia, but there is evidence that paresthesia-free stimulation using high-density (HD) parameters might also be effective. The purpose of this study is to evaluate relative effectiveness of conventional, subthreshold HD, and sham stimulation on pain intensity and quality of life. METHODS: Fifteen patients with response to conventional stimulation (60 Hz/350 μsec) were screened with a one-week trial of subthreshold HD (1200 Hz/200 μsec/amplitude 90% paresthesia threshold) and enrolled if there was at least 50% r

Density-independent population projection trajectories of chromosome-substituted lines resistant and susceptible to organophosphate insecticides in Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal fluctuations in susceptibility to organophosphate insecticides were observed in the Katsunuma population of Drosophila melanogaster for two consecutive years; susceptibility to three organophosphates tended to increase in the fall. To examine the hypothesis that variation in fitness among resistant and susceptible genotypes could trigger the change of genetic constitution within the fall population, we investigated density-independent population projection trajectories starting from single adult females with characteristics of chromosome-substituted lines resistant and sus

Association between triglyceride/high density lipoprotein ratio and incidence risk of Parkinson's disease: a population-based cohort study.

The association between insulin resistance and increased risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) has rarely been investigated. Our study aimed to investigate the association between the triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL) ratio (which represents insulin resistance), and the incidence risk of PD in the general population. This study was conducted using data from the National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort Database of South Korea (2002-2019). We enrolled 310,023 participants who had no previous PD history and who had undergone more than three repeated measurements for the T

Remnant Cholesterol and Common Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness in Community Population with Normal Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol.

INTRODUCTION: Remnant cholesterol is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, especially when low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels are normal. However, there are few studies on the relationship between remnant cholesterol and subclinical atherosclerosis. Common carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) is an imaging marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between remnant cholesterol and cIMT in a community population with normal LDL-C. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis; 1,101 community population with available ca

Contemporary Population-Based Analysis of Bone Mineral Density Testing in Men Initiating Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a cornerstone of treatment for advanced prostate cancer (PCa); however, it accelerates the loss of bone mineral density (BMD), which increases fracture risk. Guidelines recommend BMD testing when initiating ADT to assess baseline fracture risk properly. The objective of this study was to examine the proportion of BMD testing in men initiating ADT in Quebec and to identify factors associated with receipt of this testing. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of men extracted from Quebec public healthcare insurance administrative databases who ini

Temporal trends in obesity, osteoporosis treatment, bone mineral density, and fracture rates: a population-based historical cohort study.

Diverging international trends in fracture rates have been observed, with most reports showing that fracture rates have stabilized or decreased in North American and many European populations. We studied two complementary population-based historical cohorts from the Province of Manitoba, Canada (1996-2006) to determine whether declining osteoporotic fracture rates in Canada are attributable to trends in obesity, osteoporosis treatment, or bone mineral density (BMD). The Population Fracture Registry included women aged 50 years and older with major osteoporotic fractures, and was used to assess

South African founder mutations in the low-density lipoprotein receptor gene causing familial hypercholesterolemia in the Dutch population.

In South African Afrikaners, three point mutations in the gene coding for the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-receptor are responsible for more than 95% of the cases of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). To investigate whether one or more of these mutations originated in The Netherlands, a large group of Dutch heterozygous FH patients was screened for the presence of these three mutations. Of these, a missense mutation in exon 9 of the LDL-receptor gene, resulting in a substitution of Met for Val408, responsible for 15% of FH in Afrikaners, was found in 19 (1.5%) of 1268 FH patients of Dutch de
