Epidemiology of hyperhidrosis in 2 population-based health care databases.

BACKGROUND: Population-based and clinical case reports of hyperhidrosis (HH) provide prevalence estimates that vary widely across reported studies because of differences in case ascertainment. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we specify diagnostic, symptom, and prescription codes for HH to estimate incidence and prevalence for the United Kingdom and the United States. METHODS: Data from UK and US health care databases were analyzed to ascertain HH cases and estimate incidence and prevalence from health care records during calendar years 2011 through 2013. RESULTS: On the basis of 2013 data for the

A Population Health Driver Diagram to Address Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.

This article describes the process for developing a population health driver diagram to address a priority health issue in East Tennessee: neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Population health driver diagrams are used in quality improvement processes for determining and aligning actions that a community can take to achieve a specified outcome. The Tennessee Department of Health contracted with the University of Tennessee's Department of Public Health to conduct a community participatory process to contribute to a statewide health improvement plan. Colleagues in local public health practice ide

Population-based health survey in eastern region of Saudi Arabia.

A community health survey was conducted to describe the current health status and preventive health practices of National Guard military employees and their dependants residing in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. In a cross-sectional survey in 2010, data were collected via a questionnaire interview and direct physical measurements. A total of 1339 adults aged 14 years completed the survey [mean age 30.7 (SD 12.7) years]. About two-thirds of the sample had problems of overweight and obesity, while 50% had high serum lipids and psychiatric disorders. Hypertension and diabetes were detected in

Miscarriage and mental health: results of two population-based studies.

A miscarriage may have a sustained negative effect on mental health. Our aim was to analyze the association of the history and, if any, the number of miscarriages with mental health. The participants were women from two population-based studies, the Finnish Health 2000 survey and the National FINRISK 2002 Survey. Data were collected with a set of self-reported questionnaires, a clinical health examination and/or a home interview. A modified Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Munich-Composite International Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI) and ot

[Health-related quality of life of working-age immigrant population].

INTRODUCTION: The intense wave of immigration to Spain since the mid-1990s has posed a major challenge to the organization of the Spanish health system. Consequently, knowledge of the health status of the new immigrant population is highly important. The aim of this study is to analyze health-related quality of life in the working-age (16-50 years) immigrant population. METHODS: We use data from the 2006 Catalan Health Survey and probit models to analyze each of the five dimensions of the EQ-5D, a generic health-related quality of life measure (dependent variables). As explanatory variables w

Lactase persistence-related genetic variant: population substructure and health outcomes.

Lactase persistence is an autosomal-dominant trait that is common in European-derived populations. A basic tendency for lactase persistence to increase from the southeast to the northwest across European populations has been noted, but such trends within countries have not been extensively studied. We genotyped the C/T(-13910) variant (rs4988235) that constitutes the putatively causal allele for lactase persistence (T allele representing persistence) in a general population sample of 3344 women aged 60-79 years from 23 towns across Britain. We found an overall frequency of 0.253 for the C (lac

COVID-19-related health literacy, general health literacy, and mental health problems: evidence from a population-based study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic highlighted poor health literacy (HL) as an underestimated public health problem. This study aimed to examine whether COVID-19-related HL and general HL were differentially associated with mental health problems. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted among residents of Japanese metropolitan areas during the resurgence phase of the pandemic. Data from 1,482 participants were analyzed. COVID-19-related HL was assessed by participants' perceived difficulty in understanding COVID-19-related information and recommendations. Gener

Perinatal health outcomes of East African immigrant populations in Victoria, Australia: a population based study.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan African women are often treated as a single group in epidemiological studies of immigrant birth outcomes, potentially masking variations across countries. METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based study of 432,567 singleton births in Victoria, Australia comparing mothers born in one of four East African countries (453 Eritreans, 1094 Ethiopians, 1,861 Somali and 1,404 Sudanese) relative to 427,755 Australian-born women was conducted using the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection. Pearson's chi-square test and logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate di

Evaluation of the population dose to the UK population from the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme.

In the United Kingdom National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP), women aged between 50 and 70 y are invited for mammography every 3 y. Screening histories for each woman, over four screening rounds, were analysed. Data from five screening programmes were used to select 57,425 women into the study. Cases were selected on the basis of being between the ages of 50 and 53 at the start of the NHSBSP (i.e. between 1989 and 1992). Assessment of the outcome for each screening round for each woman involved assigning a simple outcome code. Each of the possible pathways through the four

Performance Drift in a Nationally Deployed Population Health Risk Algorithm in the US Veterans Health Administration.

IMPORTANCE: Clinical risk algorithms inform clinical decision support and system-level quality metrics. However, algorithm performance can drift over time and possibly promote misinformed decision-making and resource allocation. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) Care Assessment Needs (CAN) algorithm is a nationally deployed population risk algorithm used to predict risk of 90-day hospitalization and/or mortality and to allocate resources for more than 5 million veterans annually. However, drift affecting the VA CAN has not been assessed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of drift in the

Cancer-Related Health and Educational Needs and Faith-Based Health Beliefs in an Urban Muslim Population.

Cancer screening behaviors in Muslims are under-researched, and there is limited data on how it relates to their unique cultural and religious beliefs. We assessed cancer prevention and screening-related health needs in the Washington DC area. We developed the needs assessment questionnaires and recruitment strategy in collaboration with key faith leaders from four mosques in our catchment area. A total of 203 participants were recruited through community outreach and engagement approaches and were included in the discussion when developing the needs assessment to ensure questions were religio

A Novel Method for Generating Spatially Resolved Synthetic Populations for Health Impact Assessments in Vulnerable Populations.

The spatial resolution of environmental exposure and sociodemographic population data is often mismatched given limited publicly available population data that complies with privacy requirements for individuals. To address this limitation, we developed a novel matching algorithm to construct a synthetic population at the address-level. To demonstrate how our approach can improve environmental justice (EJ) analyses and health impact assessments (HIAs), we examined sociodemographic patterns of residential proximity to major roadways in Greater Boston (Massachusetts) and HIA results, comparing ou

Leveraging Social Media for Population Health Promotion: Evaluation of a Year-Long Nonprofit Public Health Campaign.

In an ever-evolving health communication landscape, nonprofit organizations must move beyond just maintaining a passive digital presence. Rather, they must actively engage communities to promote meaningful health outcomes. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council (BRHPC), serving Broward County, Florida, executed a year-long public health social media campaign to increase awareness of and educate the community about preventable health conditions. Among these were cardiovascular disease, oral cancer, and obesity. The campaign targeted Broward County's diverse audience of community residents

Design of the New York City Macroscope: Innovations in Population Health Surveillance Using Electronic Health Records.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic health records (EHRs) have the potential to offer real-time, inexpensive standardized health data about chronic health conditions. Despite rapid expansion, EHR data evaluations for chronic disease surveillance have been limited. We present design and methods for the New York City (NYC) Macroscope, an EHR-based chronic disease surveillance system. This methods report is the first in a three part series describing the development and validation of the NYC Macroscope. This report describes in detail the infrastructure underlying the NYC Macroscope; indicator definitions;
