A consecutive series of 61 patients with pre-operative hearing underwent surgical removal of a large acoustic neurinoma via the lateral suboccipital approach between 1984 and 1996. Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) were present in all cases before surgery and all patients underwent intra-operative monitoring of BAEP. Little is known about endogenous systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) plasma DNA even though it is the presumed precursor of DNA-containing immune complexes, thought to play a central role in lupus glomerulonephritis. DNA purified from SLE plasma formed discrete bands, corresponding to sizes of about 150-200, 400, 600, and 800 bp, closely resembling the characteristic 200 bp "ladder" found with oligonucleosomal (ON) DNA. By radiolabeling DNA while in whole plasma, the very small amounts present could be further characterized. All of 24 such specimens formed two or more discrete bands on 6% PAGE.

In this paper we report a case of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare abdominal tumour. A 72-year-old male with a medical history of heart disease presented to our Clinic because of pain in the right half of the abdomen. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early stage gastric cancer (EGC) has improved the success rate of en bloc resection but results in perforation more often than does endoscopic mucosal resection. Unusual computed tomographic findings were observed in four patients with congenital ocular motor apraxia (COMA). These (CT) findings were characteristic in the posterior cranial fossa, with a dilated or deformed shape and size of the fourth ventricle, particularly its upper portion. One case revealed partial agenesis of the cerebellar vermis. It was suggested that the four patients subjected to CT showed abnormal topography of the cerebellar vermis or the brain stem. We postulate that these CT findings in COMA may have an important role in its pathogenesis.

Anterior sacral meningocele is a rare entity. It arises from a congenital defect of the sacrum and the coccyx through which herniation of the caudal portion of the meninges and their contents occurs, forming a cyst-like structure. The cystic mass, which lies between the rectum and sacrum, produces a variety of symptoms depending on its size and contents and constitutes a diagnostic problem. A case of anterior sacral meningocele is presented, including the physical signs, differential diagnosis, and the dangers of aspiration or surgical intervention.

We retrospectively studied the effects and side effects of placing indwelling ureteral stents in 196 cases who underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy with a ureteral stent. The average period of ureteral stenting was approximately 22 days. AIM: To study the morphological and morphometric changes produced in the capillaries of the optic nerve (ON) head and initial portion after the experimental increase in intraocular pressure (IOP).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wistar rats underwent cauterization of three episcleral veins, which produced an immediate increase in the IOP, and was maintained for 3 months. Sagittal sections of the eyeball were studied with immunohistochemical techniques, using a primary antibody to GLUT-1. The GLUT-1 positive capillaries were counted, and measurements were made of the area, perimeter and mean diameter.
