Crystal Structures, Optical Behavior, and Magnetic Properties in Hydrated Lanthanide Iron Sulfates.

Single crystals of LnFe(SO4)3(H2O)2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm; compounds 1-11) and LnFe(SO4)3(H2O) (Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu; compounds 12-14) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis revealed that the dihydrated compounds (1-11) crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures, with the lanthanide ions adopting eight-coordinate geometries. In contrast, the monohydrated compounds (12-14) exhibit noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures, where the lanthanide ions are seven-coordinated. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) confirmed

Synthesis and structure-activity relationships of 1-phenylpyrazoles as xanthine oxidase inhibitors.

A series of 1-phenylpyrazoles was evaluated for inhibitory activity against xanthine oxidase in vitro. Of the compounds prepared, 1-(3-cyano-4-neopentyloxyphenyl)pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid (Y-700) had the most potent enzyme inhibition and displayed longer-lasting hypouricemic action than did allopurinol in a rat model of hyperuricemia induced by the uricase inhibitor potassium oxonate.

Potassium Hexafluoroacetylacetonate Complex with 18-Crown-6 Ether as a Volatile Precursor of Molecular and Inorganic Films: Thermal and Structural Insights.

Volatile coordination compounds are widely used as precursors for the gas phase synthesis of functional materials. However, such complexes are still very rare for alkali metals, especially for heavy representatives of this family (potassium, rubidium, cesium) due to the tendency to form polymeric structures. This work is devoted to the exploration of a potassium hexafluoroacetylacetonate complex with 18-crown-6 ether, K(18C6)(hfac), as a unique volatile precursor with an isolated molecular structure. A convenient synthesis procedure was developed, and key structural features were identified in

Potential New Agents for the Management of Hyperkalemia.

Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte disturbance with multiple potential etiologies. It is usually observed in the setting of reduced renal function. Mild to moderate hyperkalemia is usually asymptomatic, but is associated with poor prognosis. When severe, hyperkalemia may cause serious acute cardiac arrhythmias and conduction abnormalities, and may result in sudden death. The rising prevalence of conditions associated with hyperkalemia (heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes) and broad use of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors and mineralocorticoid receptor an

The effect of seed priming on yield and germination properties of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd).

Seed priming is a widely used pre-germination technique that enhances sprouting efficiency, synchrony, and the initial development of plantlets, particularly under suboptimal environmental conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of different seed priming treatments on the germination, growth, and yield performance of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) through a series of laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments conducted during the 2024 cropping season. The laboratory experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications. Treatments included po

Transcriptome Analysis Provides Novel Insights into the Capacity of the Ectomycorrhizal Fungus Amanita pantherina To Weather K-Containing Feldspar and Apatite.

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi, symbiotically associated with woody plants, markedly improve the uptake of mineral nutrients such as potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) by their host trees. Although it is well known that ECM fungi can obtain K and P from soil minerals through biological weathering, the mechanisms regulating this process are still poorly understood at the molecular level. Here, we investigated the transcriptional regulation of the ECM fungus Amanita pantherina in weathering K-containing feldspar and apatite using transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) and validated these results for diff

Treatment of amiodarone-induced hypothyroidism with potassium perchlorate.

The antiarrhythmic drug, amiodarone, induces thyroid dysfunction, which is potentially dangerous in cardiac patients. After discontinuation of the drug it takes several months before euthyroidism is restored. The potent antithyroid drug, potassium perchlorate (KClO4), is used successfully to treat amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis, but it is less well known as potential treatment in amiodarone-induced hypothyroidism. In this case report we describe the successful use of two courses of KClO4 treatment in a cardiac patient with severe amiodarone-induced hypothyroidism. The mechanisms responsible

Bromide toxicosis (bromism) in a dog treated with potassium bromide for refractory seizures.

A 4-year-old German Shepherd Dog was evaluated because of chronic hind limb lameness and recurrent seizures. Diagnostic evaluation of the dog confirmed rheumatoid arthritis and idiopathic epilepsy. The rheumatoid arthritis was treated with prednisone and piroxicam. The seizures were treated with phenobarbital plus clonazepam. The seizures were refractory and potassium bromide was substituted for clonazepam. The dog was reevaluated 4 months after initiation of potassium bromide treatment because of recurrence of arthritis signs. During hospitalization, the dog had neurologic signs, which progre

Oral administration of ammonium metavanadate and potassium dichromate distorts the inflammatory reaction induced by turpentine oil injection in male rats.

Heavy metal pollution is rapidly increasing in the environment. It has been shown that exposure to vanadium and chromium is able to alter the immune response. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which these metal pollutants mediate their immunomodulatory effects are not completely understood. Herein, we examined the effect of ammonium metavanadate and potassium dichromate on the development of an inflammatory response caused by subcutaneous injection of turpentine oil. We demonstrated that pretreatment of rats with ammonium metavanadate and potassium dichromate for two weeks prior to initiation of

Mechanisms and efficiency of the simultaneous removal of metals and cyanides by using ferrate(VI): crucial roles of nanocrystalline iron(III) oxyhydroxides and metal carbonates.

The reaction of potassium ferrate(VI), K(2)FeO(4), with weak-acid dissociable cyanides--namely, K(2)[Zn(CN)(4)], K(2)[Cd(CN)(4)], K(2)[Ni(CN)(4)], and K(3)[Cu(CN)(4)]--results in the formation of iron(III) oxyhydroxide nanoparticles that differ in size, crystal structure, and surface area. During cyanide oxidation and the simultaneous reduction of iron(VI), zinc(II), copper(II), and cadmium(II), metallic ions are almost completely removed from solution due to their coprecipitation with the iron(III) oxyhydroxides including 2-line ferrihydrite, 7-line ferrihydrite, and/or goethite. Based on the

A clinical validation study for application of DBS in therapeutic drug monitoring of antidepressants.

BACKGROUND: A bridging study of plasma and DBS concentrations for therapeutic drug monitoring of antidepressants was performed. RESULTS & METHODOLOGY: Potassium-based hematocrit analysis was included. In addition, we defined acceptance criteria based on the differences between individual data points of plasma and DBS concentrations. These criteria were applied to test acceptability of error found in predicted nortriptyline plasma concentrations. Potassium-based hematocrit predicted a negative bias for DBS concentrations of amitriptyline, but not for the other compounds. To predict plasma conce

Anti-AIDS agents, 18. Sodium and potassium salts of caffeic acid tetramers from Arnebia euchroma as anti-HIV agents.

Monosodium and monopotassium salts [2-4] of isomeric caffeic acid tetramers were isolated from Arnebia euchroma as anti-HIV agents. Mixtures of dipotassium and disodium salts [1] of a caffeic acid tetramer and dipotassium and potassium-sodium salts [5] of a caffeic acid tetramer glucoside were also isolated from the active fraction. The structures of 1-5 were characterized by chemical and spectral evidence. Compounds 2-4 demonstrated potent anti-HIV activity with EC50 values of 2.8, 4.0, and 1.5 micrograms/ml, respectively. Treatment of 1-4 with dilute HCl yielded known caffeic acid tetramers

Potassium channel activator attenuates salicylate-induced cochlear hearing loss potentially ameliorating tinnitus.

High dose sodium salicylate causes moderate, reversible hearing loss and tinnitus. Salicylate-induced hearing loss is believed to arise from a reduction in the electromotile response of outer hair cells (OHCs) and/or reduction of KCNQ4 potassium currents in OHCs, which decreases the driving force for the transduction current. Therefore, enhancing OHC potassium currents could potentially prevent salicylate-induced temporary hearing loss. In this study, we tested whether opening voltage-gated potassium channels using ICA-105665, a novel small molecule that opens KCNQ2/3 and KCNQ3/5 channels, can

Eplerenone improved hypokalemia in a patient with Gitelman's syndrome.

A 47-year-old woman presented with hypokalemia (2.4 mmol/L). She also had hypomagnesemia, hypocalciuria, and hyperreninemic hyperaldosteronism. Sequence analysis revealed a compound heterozygous mutation, R655C and R955Q, in the SLC12A3 gene. These findings were compatible with Gitelman's syndrome (GS). Eplerenone, a selective aldosterone blocker, in combination with oral potassium chloride improved serum potassium level (3.6 mmol/L) with no apparent adverse effect. Although eplerenone has an advantage over spironolactone for its selective affinity for the aldosterone receptor, the efficacy an

Oxidation of trichloroethylene, toluene, and ethanol vapors by a partially saturated permeable reactive barrier.

The mitigation of volatile organic compound (VOC) vapors in the unsaturated zone largely relies on the active removal of vapor by ventilation. In this study we considered an alternative method involving the use of solid potassium permanganate to create a horizontal permeable reactive barrier for oxidizing VOC vapors. Column experiments were carried out to investigate the oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE), toluene, and ethanol vapors using a partially saturated mixture of potassium permanganate and sand grains. Results showed a significant removal of VOC vapors due to the oxidation. We found

Ionic Disorders in Persistent Atrial Fibrillation: Therapeutic Targeting by Plant-Derived Bioactive Compounds.

Persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with distinct ion channel abnormalities and their regulatory mechanisms. This review explores the potential of plant-derived bioactive compounds to correct these dysfunctions. As a prevalent cardiac arrhythmia, AF involves a complex pathogenesis featuring dysregulated activity in potassium, sodium, and calcium channels. Such ionic disturbances foster electrophysiological instability in cardiomyocytes, which contributes to AF initiation and sustenance. Plant-based compounds have attracted considerable attention for their multitargeted actions, l

Novel approaches to management of hyperkalaemia in kidney transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Medications used frequently after kidney transplantation, including calcineurin inhibitors, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, beta blockers and antimicrobials, are considered the leading culprit for posttransplant hyperkalaemia in recipients with a well functioning allograft. Other risk factors include comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and heart failure; and consumption of a potassium-enriched diet. We review the mechanisms for hyperkalaemia following kidney transplantation that are addressed using nonpharmacological and phar
