During the period 1990-2002 in Himachal Pradesh, India, 103 new patients with cutaneous sporotrichosis were detected. Lymphocutaneous and fixed cutaneous varieties were the most common and seen in 49% and 43% respectively. Chronic non-specific inflammation without granuloma formation was seen in 46% skin biopsy specimens, 29% showed acute or chronic inflammation and tuberculoid granuloma formation was seen in 25%. We report a 71-year-old Japanese healthy female with an unusual clinical course of sporotrichosis; she developed infectious lesions on the face and the left upper limb at different periods. The initial lesion appeared on her right cheek and nose in 1992. Histopathologic and fungal examinations comfirmed the diagnosis of sporotrichosis. A sensitive assay is developed to assess the existence of an iodide channel in a fraction of solubilized membrane proteins. This step is critical when considering various procedures for purification of this channel. Sodium cholate is used as a detergent as it does not denature the iodide channel. A simple and rapid method involving gel-filtration chromatography is used simultaneously to remove the detergent and to adjust the buffer composition, before protein insertion into liposomes. A case of entomophthoromycosis of the nose and paranasal sinus is presented. To our knowledge, this is the youngest patient reported with this infection. Though the clinical picture mimicked a malignancy, histopathology clinched the diagnosis of entomophthoromycosis. The lesions resolved completely with oral potassium iodide.

RATIONALE: Pendred syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by sensorineural hearing loss, inner ear malformations, goiter, and abnormal organification of iodide. It is caused by mutations in SLC26A4 gene, which encodes pendrin (a transporter of chloride, bicarbonate, and iodide). Pendred syndrome is a common cause of syndromic deafness, but the metabolic abnormalities it causes are often overlooked. We describe three cases of sporotrichosis which were successfully treated with itraconazole 100mg daily. Itraconazole was effective and well tolerated in one patient with lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis who discontinued potassium iodide therapy because of side-effects and in two patients with fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis.

Therapeutic effects of Sodium Iodide (NaI), Potassium Iodide (KI), ground berries of "Endod" (Phytolacca dodecandra) and Penstrip were evaluated on 70 cases of equine hitoplasmosis (EH). Subcutaneous zygomycosis caused by Basidiobolus ranarum is endemic in South India. The present report is of an agricultural labourer who presented with a painless swelling of the left thigh. Culture of the affected tissue yielded B. ranarum. The swelling completely subsided with oral potassium iodide.
