Does telemonitoring in heart failure empower patients for self-care? A qualitative study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the extent to which telemonitoring in patients with heart failure empowers them to self-care. BACKGROUND: Telemonitoring is increasingly used to provide structured follow-up. In patients with heart failure it has been shown to reduce mortality. However there is limited knowledge of the extent to which it supports the patient to develop self-care skills. DESIGN: A qualitative study including interviews with patients at 2 time-points. METHODS: Fifteen patients mean age 74, 11 (73%) male, 9 (60%) symptomatic on moderate activity, 6 (40%) symptomatic on mild exer

Power output during women's World Cup road cycle racing.

Little information exists on the power output demands of competitive women's road cycle racing. The purpose of our investigation was to document the power output generated by elite female road cyclists who achieved success in FLAT and HILLY World Cup races. Power output data were collected from 27 top-20 World Cup finishes (19 FLAT and 8 HILLY) achieved by 15 nationally ranked cyclists (mean +/- SD; age: 24.1+/-4.0 years; body mass: 57.9+/-3.6 kg; height: 168.7+/-5.6 cm; VO2max 63.6+/-2.4 mL kg(-1) min(-1); peak power during graded exercise test (GXT(peak power)): 310+/-25 W). Penalized canonical correlation analysis reveals a relationship between temperament traits and brain oscillations during mind wandering.

INTRODUCTION: There has been a growing interest in studying brain activity under naturalistic conditions. However, the relationship between individual differences in ongoing brain activity and psychological characteristics is not well understood. We investigated this connection, focusing on the association between oscillatory activity in the brain and individually characteristic dispositional traits. Given the variability of unconstrained resting states among individuals, we devised a paradigm that could harmonize the state of mind across all participants. METHODS: We constructed task contras

Current Validated Medical Treatments for Tinnitus: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Tinnitus distress results from a weave of physical and psychological processes. Reducing the power of the psychological processes will therefore reduce the degree of suffering. The main psychological therapy in this context is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This seeks to understand and change the influence of thinking processes, including information processing biases, and the behaviors that these motivate, on the experience of tinnitus. The results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses indicate that CBT is the tinnitus management approach for which there is the most robust evidence. In

Kidney transplantation and liaison psychiatry, part II: A case of dissociative identity disorder.

The authors examined the case of an adolescent patient with dissociative identity disorder secondary to psychological shock of a transplant rejection response. Psychiatric symptoms consisted of three components: visual hallucinations and delusions as a psychological defense against the anxiety of a transplant rejection; appearance of three personalities including proper self, the dead child (donor), and a prophet with strong predicting power; and a twilight state. These psychiatric symptoms may have been related to two psychological factors: immature personality characteristics formed during h

Psychological Predictors of Fibromyalgia Among High School Students.

The purpose of the current study was to examine prediction power of psychological factors (i.e., alexithymia and psychological distress) on fibromyalgia among high school students. A cross-sectional, correlational design was used. Data related to alexithymia, psychological distress, and fibromyalgia were collected from 483 high school students from the northern part of Jordan using stratified cluster random sampling. Results showed that psychological distress is a significant predictor of fibromyalgia (odds ratio = 1.1, p < 0.001). Significant differences were found between males and females i

[Psychological mechanisms in the transition from acute to chronic pain: over- or underrated?].

INTRODUCTION: During the last 20 years a great number of studies have emphasized the potential role of psychological factors as relevant predictors for the first onset of back pain as well as for the development of chronic pain. The formulation of a biopsychosocial perspective of the etiology and chronicity of back pain was a natural consequence. Actual questions concern the relative impact of psychological risk factors in the process of chronicity of back pain compared to biomedical, social and occupational factors. METHODS: Whereas several review articles regarding the role of psychological

The dominance behavioral system and psychopathology: evidence from self-report, observational, and biological studies.

The dominance behavioral system (DBS) can be conceptualized as a biologically based system that guides dominance motivation, dominant and subordinate behavior, and responsivity to perceptions of power and subordination. A growing body of research suggests that problems with the DBS are evident across a broad range of psychopathologies. We begin by describing psychological, social, and biological correlates of the DBS. Extensive research suggests that externalizing disorders, mania proneness, and narcissistic traits are related to heightened dominance motivation and behaviors. Mania and narciss

How Online Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Influences Self-Disclosure Online among Chinese Adolescents: Moderated Mediation Effect of Exhibitionism and Narcissism.

Under the basic framework of self-determination theory, the present study examined a moderated mediation model in which exhibitionism mediated the relationship between online basic psychological need satisfaction and self-disclosure on the mobile Internet, and this mediation effect was moderated by narcissism. A total of 296 Chinese middle school students participated in this research. The results revealed that exhibitionism fully mediated the association between online competence need satisfaction and self-disclosure on the mobile net, and partly mediated the association between online relate

Long-term resting EEG correlates of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury and loss of consciousness: alterations in alpha-beta power.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term changes to EEG spectra after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI, i.e., concussion) have been reported; however, the role of injury characteristics in long-term EEG changes is unclear. It is also unclear how any chronic EEG changes may underlie either subjective or objective cognitive difficulties, which might help explain the variability in recovery after mTBI. METHODS: This study included resting-state high-density electroencephalography (EEG) and mTBI injury data from 340 service members and veterans collected on average 11 years after injury as well as measures of objec

Accuracy in parameter estimation and simulation approaches for sample-size planning accounting for item effects.

The planning of sample size for research studies often focuses on obtaining a significant result given a specified level of power, significance, and an anticipated effect size. This planning requires prior knowledge of the study design and a statistical analysis to calculate the proposed sample size. However, there may not be one specific testable analysis from which to derive power (Silberzahn et al., Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, 1(3), 337356, 2018) or a hypothesis to test for the project (e.g., creation of a stimuli database). Modern power and sample size plann

Sanctions as a tactic used in partner conflicts: theoretical, operational, and preliminary findings.

Partner sanction in this study is a form/tactic of violence, much like verbal and physical violence, which partners use toward each other during their conflicts. The partner sanction embodies a temporary deprivation of a mutually agreed-on right. The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical and operational framework of sanctions partners use. The study sampled 74 heterosexual couples from the general population (148 male and female participants). The findings support the validity and reliability of the sanction measurement. Furthermore, findings indicate that the use of sanctions betw

Sexual bondage: a review and unobtrusive investigation.

To investigate unobtrusively how individuals experience sexual bondage, we analyzed all messages about sexual bondage (N = 514) mailed to an international computerized discussion group on sexual bondage in 1990. The most frequent individual experience reported (n = 60) was playful use of bondage to explore new areas of sexual pleasure. Other frequent experiences were the exchange of power, intensified sexual pleasure, and tactile stimulation and bodily sensations. Preference for the dominant-initiator role was expressed in 71% of the messages by male heterosexuals, 11% of the messages by heter

Physiological and Psychological Predictors of Functional Performance Related to Injury Risk in Female Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Lower-extremity injuries are common among female athletes; however, their multifactorial predictors remain insufficiently understood. Given the interplay between physiological and psychological readiness in athletic performance, identifying the factors that influence lower limb performance is crucial for effective injury prevention. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive effects of physiological (VO2peak, anaerobic power, agility, and isokinetic strength) and psychological (resilience and self-efficacy) variables on functional performance related to risk of inju

Resting-state quantitative electroencephalography in men and women college athletes before and after sport-related concussion.

This study aimed to determine whether sex-related differences exist in resting-state quantitative electroencephalography (rs-QEEG), along with post-concussion symptoms and psychological health indicators, at baseline and within 72 h following a sport-related concussion. Baseline visit included 115 (31 women) student-athletes aged 16-22 years old where self-reported measures of psychological health and post-concussion symptoms, as well as 10 min of rs-QEEG (five minutes eyes-closed, five minutes eyes-open) were recorded. 30 athletes (8 women) subsequently sustained a sport-related concussion du

Understanding Power Dynamics of Latter-Day Saint Marriages in the United States.

Equality in marriage is an important element of healthy relationships. Religious marriages differ from those of non-religious or religiously ambiguous individuals. How religious couples experience equality in marriage is an understudied process. A grounded theory design was used to understand how Latter-day Saint couples experience marital power sharing. Thirty-one participants (fifteen opposite sex couples and one wife) participated in 46 interviews where they discussed their marital dynamics, especially surrounding their perceived influence of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Historical Consequences of Colonialism, Disempowerment, and Reactionary Government Decisions in Relation to Imprisonment Rates in Australia's Northern Territory: A Potential Solution.

The Northern Territory (N.T.) of Australia has the highest imprisonment rate per capita in the country. The vast majority of prisoners (86%) are Indigenous Australian despite only 30% of the N.T. population identifying as Indigenous. This paper investigates factors influencing this over-representation. The most common reason for imprisonment concerns violence. Alcohol is consumed in high quantities, particularly in Central Australia and is thought to affect incarceration rates. Recent strategies to control alcohol abuse in the N.T. have been ineffective in comparison with other states of Austr

The subtle suspension of backlash: A meta-analysis of penalties for women's implicit and explicit dominance behavior.

Previous research suggests that women, more than men, experience negative outcomes when they display dominance. A closer look, however, reveals ambiguity about the specific forms of dominance proscribed for women. Here, we suggest that negative reactions to women's dominance, a counter-stereotypical behavior, may require that the behavior be clearly encoded as counter-stereotypical-which is less likely when the behavior is expressed implicitly. This hypothesis was tested with a meta-analysis of studies on the evaluation of individuals behaving dominantly, including articles not directly invest

Men and intimate partner rape: characteristics of men who sexually abuse their partner.

This article explores men's use of sexual violence against their intimate partner. Although there is a growing body of information about men's use of physical violence, there is less data about men's sexual violence in intimate partnerships. Data were collected from 229 men who were enrolled in an intervention program for men who abuse. Of men in this study, 53% had sexually assaulted their partner at least one time. This article will address the ways in which this sample of men sexually abused their partner and the connection between physical and sexual abuse within their relationships.
