BACKGROUND: Because of the changing dietary habits of an aging population, hyperuricemia is frequently found in combination with other metabolic disorders. Longstanding elevation of the serum uric acid level can lead to the deposition of monosodium urate crystals, causing gout (arthritis, urate nephropathy, tophi). In Germany, the prevalence of gouty arthritis is estimated at 1.4%, higher than that of rheumatoid arthritis. There are no German guidelines to date for the treatment of gout. Its current treatment is based largely on expert opinion.

Increased use of regular screening mammograms and clinical breast examinations (CBE) among women aged 40 years and more could have a dramatic impact on mortality from breast cancer, but patient and physician barriers to mammography impede its acceptance. We conducted a survey of 300 primary care physicians to assess their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and breast screening practices. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective study, using anonymized data from the Norwegian prescription registry.
SETTING: Based on an initiative from the GPs in Molde Municipality in Norway, a multilevel community intervention was initiated by the municipal chief physician in 2018. The intervention targeted GPs, patients, and the public.

The first revision of the practice guideline 'Otitis externa' from the Dutch College of General Practitioners has been published. Data from a clinical trial in primary care clearly show that acid eardrops containing corticosteroids are superior to acid eardrops without corticosteroids. Other minor changes have been made. A KOH test is no longer necessary in general practice. Aluminium acetotartrate eardrops 1.2% are reserved for otitis externa with tympanic membrane perforation.
