Surveys were carried out on random samples of the farming population in Devon and Wales in order to estimate the prevalence of respiratory symptoms and of positive precipitin reactions to thermophilic fungi. Bronchitis, as defined, was common among the Welsh hill farmers, and the proportion of positive serological tests was higher in both the areas surveyed in Wales as compared with Devon. Two strains of laboratory white mice, CFLP and LACA, were infected with the metacestodes of Taenia crassiceps. The serum from each infected mouse was tested for antibodies on double-diffusion gel plates and the number of antigen-antibody precipitin lines formed related (a) to the duration of the infection and (b) to the volume of metacestodes. There was a significant increase in the number of antigen-antibody precipitins with regard to the time infected but not to the volume of metacestodes. The pattern of development of the antigen-antibody precipitation system was also examined.

In the course of studying antinuclear antibodies in the rheumatic diseases, a new precipitin reaction (provisionally referred to as PM-1) was observed between calf thymus nuclear extract and polymyositis sera. Objectives of this study were to further define the immunologic nature of this reaction and to determine its specificity for polymyositis. Two cases of hypersensitivity pneumonitis in grain workers are described. Both cases had evidence of sensitization to the gram-negative bacteria Erwinia herbicola as judged by skin tests, detection of serum precipitins, and inhalation challenge. The syndrome of Henoch-Schoenlein purpura developed in a 74-year-old woman after receiving streptokinase as thrombolytic therapy for an acute myocardial infarction. A 54-year-old man presented with features consistent with extrinsic allergic alveolitis occurring after contact with his pet birds. A fairly clean antigenic cuticle was isolated from the S. digitata by dissection. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis of cuticular antigens against rabbit antiserum to cuticular antigens gave 30 anodic and 5 cathodic precipitin arcs. Immunoelectroporesis (IEF) and immunoelectroosmophoresis-immunodiffusion (IEOP-ID) (1) were comparatively used in the diagnosis of 16 patients with mycologically proved paracocidioidomycosis.
