Novel Applications of Natural Biomaterials in Dentistry-Properties, Uses, and Development Perspectives.

Natural biomaterials have gained significant attention in modern dentistry due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. These materials, including alginate, cellulose, chitosan, collagen, and hydroxyapatite, have been widely explored for their applications in stomatology. They play a crucial role in periodontal disease treatment, caries prevention, and implantology, providing an alternative to synthetic materials. Natural polymers such as chitosan and cellulose are utilized in drug delivery systems and tissue regeneration, while hydroxyapatite serves as a bone subst

The use of CDA best management practices and amalgam separators to improve the management of dental wastewater.

Concerns over the persistence and effects of mercury in the environment, particularly in wastewater, have increased significantly over the past decade. Because mercury is a component of dental amalgam, comprising about 50 percent of amalgam among other metals, in recent years the concern has affected dental practices and even educational curricula in the dental schools. While numbers vary widely from area to area, on average, it is estimated dentistry contributes less than 1 percent of the mercury generated from human activity to the environment. Despite dentistry's low contribution to the env

The light at the other end of the tunnel: heeding two decades of regeneration research to reclaim natural tooth preservation.

Despite advancements in biomimetic and regenerative dentistry, contemporary prosthetic restorations, though clinically successful, remain fundamentally imperfect replications of the natural tooth's inherent biological perfection. Crucially, while these advancements remain vital, the dental discipline has increasingly shifted from preventive focus to a reparative focus. Given that dental decay-the primary concern in a dental practice-is a highly predictable and preventable condition and that tooth loss is a largely avoidable outcome, we propose that the future of the discipline lies in transiti

Smile Beyond the Stars: A Narrative Review Exploring the Challenges for Dentistry in Space.

Space dentistry addresses the unique challenges of providing dental care in space, where zero gravity, limited resources, and the vast distance from Earth complicate the maintenance of oral health. Ensuring astronauts' dental health is crucial, as dental issues can adversely affect their overall health and mission performance. Microgravity exacerbates risks for dental problems such as periodontitis, dental caries, bone loss, and potentially, neoplasms. Traditional dental care methods become less effective in microgravity, leading to increased plaque accumulation and worsening of dental disease

A novel dual-reactive primer enhances bond durability and builds chemical interlocking structures at the caries-affected dentin-biomaterial interface.

Dental caries remains a major challenge in clinical dentistry, with successful resin restoration relying on the formation of a durable dentin-resin interface. In minimally invasive dentistry (MID), caries-affected dentin (CAD) is routinely preserved and often becomes the primary bonding substrate. However, bonding to CAD is suboptimal, and current strategies to improve this interface are limited. Here, we present a novel bonding strategy based on a dual-reactive functional monomer, ITCM, in combination with pretreatment application techniques. A simple 5-s ITCM pretreatment significantly enhan

Preventive Prosthodontics: Integrating Preventive Prosthodontic Principles Into the Indian Oral Health Policy Framework.

BACKGROUND: Prosthodontics is considered to be a rehabilitative discipline that aims at improving the functional, esthetic, and quality aspects of an individual's mouth after the loss of their teeth. Recent research indicates that prosthodontics can also play a preventive role by preserving oral structures, timely intervention, maintenance and prevention of biological and mechanical problems related to prosthodontic rehabilitation. Despite its clinical relevance, the concept of preventive prosthodontics remains underrepresented within Indian oral health policy frameworks. OBJECTIVE: The purpo

Dental drug-delivery devices: local and sustained-release applications.

Dental diseases are among the most prevalent illnesses in humans. Many pharmaceutical dosage forms are used to prevent and treat these diseases. Toothpastes and mouthwashes are two of the most popular dental medicaments. A local delivery application that prolongs the release of the drug in the mouth offers great advantages in preventing and treating caries and periodontal diseases. Sustained-release devices are a relatively new concept in dentistry. This paper describes several types of sustained-release devices that are available commercially or are in the premarketing stage.

Dentistry and medicine, then and now.

Two factors have, at times, pushed dentistry and medicine together and pulled them apart. The factor acting to create a symbiosis is the common biomedical or scientific foundation for these fields. The factor causing independence deals with socio-cultural matters impacting on the professions and the public. These two factors will be examined at three points in time when the relationship between the two professions was significantly important for the welfare of the public: the 1920s and '30s, the 1960s and '70s, and our own time. Contemporary major discussion about the alignment of dental educa

Current Approaches to Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Infective Endocarditis in Pediatric Dentistry: A Review.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection of the cardiac epithelium, with a mortality rate of approximately 5% in children. The most common risk factor for IE in this population is congenital heart disease. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry acknowledges that certain medical conditions increase susceptibility to infections resulting from bacteremia. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for high-risk patients prior to procedures that could induce bacteremia, with the goal of reducing or preventing transient bacteremia caused by invas
