Additive manufacturing, framed within the Industry 4.0. concept, is one of the processes that has witnessed greater development in the last years. Within this subject fused deposition modelling (FDM) printing technology is mainly dedicated to polymers and capable of providing components or elements of sufficient quality for different sectors. However, due to the process there can be a series of surface irregularities, which although they do not affect the required dimensional tolerances, they can cause problems in the useful life of the printed object in its interactions with the environment, …

BACKGROUND: The Nuss procedure is a minimally invasive surgery for pectus excavatum. Success of the Nuss procedure is dependent on a previously bent pectus bar that is shaped to the desired curvature of the chest wall. Traditionally, the size and curvature of the metallic pectus bar are determined by trial and error. Herein, we introduce a novel design method for the metallic pectus bar to optimize the bar curvature and outcome after the Nuss procedure.
METHODS: From August 2016 through March 2017, 10 consecutive patients with pectus excavatum underwent the three-dimensional (3D) printed mode

A polyurethane acrylate-based photosensitive resin system was developed for 405 nm DLP printing. The formulations were prepared by blending commercial urethane acrylate RT75A with TPO-L, BBOT, and one of four reactive diluents (ACMO, IBOMA, TPGDA, or CTFA). Double-bond conversion was determined by ATR-FTIR, whereas viscosity, UV-Vis transmittance, working-curve parameters (critical exposure and penetration depth), volumetric shrinkage, and mechanical properties were evaluated. The reactive diluent markedly affected both the liquid-state behavior of the resin formulations and the properties of …

On-chip inductors are essential components of radio-frequency integrated circuits, yet their large footprint and limited scalability constrain chip miniaturization and increase manufacturing costs. Here we show a method for integrating three-dimensional metal microinductors directly onto chip contact pads using high-precision electrodeposition. The resulting freestanding coils extend above the chip surface, decoupling their inductance from the planar silicon area they occupy. We fabricate copper microsolenoids with different geometries directly on test chips and characterize their electrical p

We demonstrate an approach to three-dimensional (3D) printing of ice structures by exploiting evaporative cooling. A micrometer-sized water jet is used to 3D print inside a vacuum chamber. The reduced ambient pressure leads to rapid evaporation of the extruded water, extracting latent heat, and quickly cooling the water well below 0 °C. Once deposited, the water freezes almost instantaneously into stable ice structures. We achieved high-fidelity printing via two distinct deposition techniques: layer-by-layer deposition for intricate 3D structures (e.g., a Christmas tree), and support-free mid-…

Dinoflagellates, a group of marine unicellular algae, are known for the fascinating glowing effects in coastal waters. While this natural mechanoluminescent phenomenon has been explored in pressure sensors and optical transducers, technologies to shape dinoflagellate-containing materials into more complex, engineering-relevant geometries remain limited. Here, we report a three-dimensional printing strategy to manufacture complex-shaped mechanoluminescent objects using dinoflagellates embedded in biocompatible hydrogels. The growth and mechanoluminescence of the entrapped dinoflagellates were i…

Structural anisotropy is ubiquitous in nature and governs orientation-dependent properties and functions1,2. Recreating biomimetic anisotropy in hydrogels-water-rich soft materials widely used in biomedicine-has proven challenging3. Here we report a phenomenon termed shear-extensional in situ particle-to-fibre transformation (SHIFT) and demonstrate the SHIFT printing of highly aligned hydrogel microfibres (5-30 μm in diameter). In SHIFT, particle-embedded hydrogel is extruded in a controlled manner, in which the discrete particles and surrounding matrix experience opposite phase transitions, c…

Engineered tissues could one day offer critical therapeutic relief for those requiring whole organ transplantation. Yet, their translation remains hindered by the need for robust vascularization throughout tissues of organ-scale sizes. Here, we used selective laser sintering of sacrificial isomalt templates to pattern vascular-promoting "tracks" across murine organ-scale tissue constructs. Upon implantation in mice, the patterned tracks architecturally guided host-mediated vascularization within fibrin and gelatin methacrylate/methacryloyl (GelMA) constructs. While the inclusion of tracks impr
