[Visual Acuity, Contrast Sensitivity, Colour Vision: Thoughts on Psychophysical Exams in Neuro-ophthalmology].

Despite many technical advances, psychophysical testing of perceptual performance continues to play an important role in ophthalmic diagnostics, including neuro-ophthalmology. The present article considers methodological and clinical aspects of examining visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and colour vision. In contrast to acuity, contrast sensitivity is at present rarely tested, despite often being a more sensitive marker of disease. In general, standardised procedures have the advantage of a high degree of comparability. However, tests that deviate from the standard might be better adapted

Relationship Between Peripheral and Psychophysical Measures of Amplitude Modulation Detection in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between electrophysiological and psychophysical measures of amplitude modulation (AM) detection. Prior studies have reported both measures of AM detection recorded separately from cochlear implant (CI) users and acutely deafened animals, but no study has made both measures in the same CI users. Animal studies suggest a progressive loss of high-frequency encoding as one ascends the auditory pathway from the auditory nerve to the cortex. Because the CI speech processor uses the envelope of an ongoing acoustic signal to modulate pulse trains tha

Three-Dimensional Face Recognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Psychophysical and Structural MR Study.

OBJECTIVES: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been associated with a high risk of conversion to Alzheimer's dementia. In addition to memory complaints, impairments in the visuospatial domain have been reported in this condition. We have previously shown that deficits in perceiving structure-from-motion (SFM) objects are reflected in functional reorganization of brain activity within the visual ventral stream. Here we aimed to identify structural correlates of psychophysical complex face and object recognition performance in amnestic MCI patients (n=30 vs. n=25 controls). This study was, ther

Chemosensory function assessed with psychophysical testing and event-related potentials in patients with atrophic rhinitis.

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammation of the nose characterized by an atrophy of the nasal mucosa. This is typically associated with an impaired sense of smell and a subjective sensation of poor nasal breathing. The aim of this study is to assess chemosensory function in patients suffering from AR using psychophysical testings and event-related potentials (ERP) responses. A cohort of nine patients was extensively studied. Eight out of nine had secondary AR sequela of a bilateral total inferior turbinectomy whereas one patient had a primary AR. All the patients had a clinical evaluat

The time course of cochlear gain reduction measured using a more efficient psychophysical technique.

In a previous study it was shown that an on-frequency precursor intended to activate the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) at the signal frequency reduces the gain estimated from growth-of-masking (GOM) functions. This is called the temporal effect (TE). In Expt. 1 a shorter method of measuring this change in gain is established. GOM functions were measured with an on- and off-frequency precursor presented before the masker and signal, and used to estimate Input/Output functions. The change in gain estimated in this way was very similar to that estimated from comparing two points measured wit

Unpleasant odors increase pain processing in a patient with neuropathic pain: psychophysical and fMRI investigation.

A 49-year old man with neuropathic pain in his right elbow, wrist and digits III-V of his hand reported that certain odors increased his pain by superimposing an electric shock-like pain to his already existing pain. Psychophysical testing revealed that the best predictor of pain exacerbation was odor unpleasantness. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed increased activation following an unpleasant odor in pain related areas, including the thalamus, amygdala, insular and anterior cingulate cortices, with similar trends in primary somatosensory cortex hand/arm area. The increased

Urine catecholamine concentrations and psychophysical stress in elite tennis under practice and tournament conditions.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to specify and define the differences of psychophysical stress in elite tennis players under practice and tournament conditions. METHODS: Basal, pre- and postcompetition urine samples of 26 nationally ranked players (NR) were analysed for concentrations of epinephrine (EPI) and norepinephrine (NE) under practice (P) and tournament conditions (T). Results were completed by the values obtained from two internationally ranked players (IR) competing in 6 (player A) and 5 (player B) Davis-Cup matches, respectively. RESULTS: In NR, pre- and postcompetition

Effects of aspirin on psychophysical measures of frequency selectivity, two-tone suppression, and growth of masking.

Three psychophysical measures of nonlinearity were evaluated before and during a course of aspirin ingestion to investigate the role of outer hair cells (OHCs) in these measures, as aspirin is thought to alter the functioning of OHCs. Six normal-hearing individuals received a moderate dose (3.9 g/day) of aspirin for four days, producing essentially flat, temporary hearing losses that ranged from 5-20 dB. The losses were about 2 dB greater for a 300-ms signal than for a 15-ms signal, indicating reduced temporal integration with aspirin. On the final three days of aspirin use, three experiments

Part II. Measuring skin pain in humans: Quantitative, psychophysical, and patient-reported tools for dermatology.

Quantifying skin pain is essential for dermatologic research and patient care. This Methods and Techniques in Skin Research article (part II) synthesizes human-focused tools spanning psychophysical and patient-reported measures. A standardized workflow for quantitative sensory testing (QST) outlines the measurement of thermal detection and pain thresholds, mechanical detection and pinprick pain, temporal summation, dynamic mechanical allodynia, vibration, and pressure; these techniques enable phenotyping of gain and loss of somatosensory function. Core patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs)

Psychophysical and Psychometric Properties of Visual Analog Scales: An Auditory-Perceptual Study Applied to Hypokinetic Dysarthria.

PURPOSE: Despite the widespread use of visual analog scales (VASs), their psychophysical and psychometric properties for rating dysarthria remain largely untested. Using a scale whose measurement properties, reliability, and validity are unknown undermines the comparison of findings across studies and clinical contexts. Therefore, we investigated these properties of VAS using samples of hypokinetic dysarthria. METHOD: Thirty-seven nonexperts and three dysarthria experts evaluated 85 speech samples from individuals with Parkinson's disease and healthy controls on overall severity, reduced loud

Temporal integration of short-duration pulse trains in cochlear implant listeners: Psychophysical and electrophysiological measurements.

While electrically-evoked auditory brainstem response (eABR) thresholds for low-rate pulse trains correlate well with behavioral thresholds measured at the same rate, the correlation is much weaker with behavioral thresholds measured at high rates, such as used clinically. This implies that eABRs to low-rate stimuli cannot be reliably used for objective programming of threshold levels in cochlear implant (CI) users. Here, we investigate whether the use of bunched-up pulses (BUPS), consisting of groups of closely-spaced pulses may be used as an alternative stimulus. Experiment 1 measured psycho

Identification of neural and psychophysical predictors of headache reduction after cognitive behavioral therapy in adolescents with migraine.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a psychological intervention that involves development of coping strategies to reduce the experience of pain. Although CBT is a promising intervention to reduce headache days in patients with migraine, it may not be effective for all patients. Thus, there is a need to identify markers that could predict which patients will respond to CBT. We aimed to determine whether baseline brain function and amygdalar connectivity, assessed by functional magnetic resonance imaging, or pain modulation capacities, assessed by the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) respons

No Olfactory Compensation in Food-related Hazard Detection Among Blind and Deaf Adults: A Psychophysical Approach.

The exposure-driven olfactory compensation associated with sensory loss is likely to be observed in assessment of food-related dangers. Therefore, in the current study we tested the hypothesis that olfactory compensation occurs in the case of protection from food-related hazards. We compared thresholds for detection of an unpleasant rotten food odor (fermented fish sauce) in four groups of subjects: blind subjects (n = 100), sighted controls (n = 100), deaf subjects (n = 74) and hearing controls (n = 99). Overall, we observed no significant differences in smell acuity between the blind and dea

Controlling for Participants' Viewing Distance in Large-Scale, Psychophysical Online Experiments Using a Virtual Chinrest.

While online experiments have shown tremendous potential to study larger and more diverse participant samples than is possible in the lab, the uncontrolled online environment has prohibited many types of psychophysical studies due to difficulties controlling the viewing distance and stimulus size. We introduce the Virtual Chinrest, a method that measures a participant's viewing distance in the web browser by detecting a participant's blind spot location. This makes it possible to automatically adjust stimulus configurations based on an individual's viewing distance. We validated the Virtual Ch
