The role of psychosocial factors and psychiatric disorders in functional dyspepsia.

In this Review, after a brief historical introduction, we first provide an overview of epidemiological studies that demonstrate an association between functional dyspepsia and psychological traits, states or psychiatric disorders. These studies suggest an important intrinsic role for psychosocial factors and psychiatric disorders, especially anxiety and depression, in the aetiopathogenesis of functional dyspepsia, in addition to their putative influence on health-care-seeking behaviour. Second, we describe pathophysiological evidence on how psychosocial factors and psychiatric disorders might

Determinants of symptoms in functional dyspepsia: gastric sensorimotor function, psychosocial factors or somatisation?

BACKGROUND: Gastric sensorimotor dysfunction, psychosocial factors and somatisation are all implicated in symptom generation in functional dyspepsia (FD). AIM: To determine the relative contribution of each of these factors to overall dyspeptic symptom severity and weight loss in FD. METHODS: In 201 consecutive tertiary care patients with FD (mean age 40.1 (SD 12.6) years), gastric sensorimotor function was studied using barostat (sensitivity, compliance and accommodation). Psychosocial factors (depression and anxiety disorders, positive and negative affect, perceived stress, alexithymia and

Do virtual reality-based therapies affect symptomatology and psychosocial functioning in schizophrenia spectrum disorders: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality is a promising intervention for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs), offering immersive environments to support therapy. However, evidence for its effectiveness across symptom domains remains inconsistent. AIMS: To assess the effectiveness of virtual reality-based therapies (VRT) for SSDs on symptomatology and psychosocial functioning compared with control conditions. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled trials using virtual reality for individuals with SSDs was conducted. Searches were conducted across PubMed, PsychINFO, EMBASE, CINAHL …

Unipolar mania as a distinct clinical presentation: Differences in illness course and psychosocial functioning compared with bipolar I disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Growing evidence suggests that unipolar mania (UM) may represent a distinct clinical condition rather than a subtype of bipolar disorder (BD). The present study aimed to compare the sociodemographic characteristics, clinical features, and psychosocial functioning of euthymic patients with UM or bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and healthy control subjects. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included euthymic patients with UM (n=58), BD-I (n=58), and healthy control subjects (n=58). Diagnoses were established according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edi…

Risk Predictors and Cognitive Outcomes of the Psychosocial Functioning of North American Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused a global mental health deterioration. The disruption of older adults' psychosocial functions is particularly concerning given their social support and technology use barriers. Despite a close relationship between social engagement and cognitive function in older adults, little is known about the cognitive consequences of older adults' disrupted psychosocial functions in the context of the pandemic. Aims: This study aims to identify sociodemographic and COVID-19-related predictors for psychosocial functioning in North American older adults and to examine…

Processing speed mediates the relationship between DDR1 and psychosocial functioning in euthymic patients with bipolar disorder presenting psychotic symptoms.

The DDR1 locus is associated with the diagnosis of schizophrenia and with processing speed in patients with schizophrenia and first-episode psychosis. Here, we investigated whether DDR1 variants are associated with bipolar disorder (BD) features. First, we performed a case‒control association study comparing DDR1 variants between patients with BD and healthy controls. Second, we performed linear regression analyses to assess the associations of DDR1 variants with neurocognitive domains and psychosocial functioning. Third, we conducted a mediation analysis to explore whether neurocognitive impa…

The longitudinal effect of antipsychotic burden on psychosocial functioning in first-episode psychosis patients: the role of verbal memory.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature supports antipsychotics' (AP) efficacy in acute first-episode psychosis (FEP) in terms of symptomatology and functioning but also a cognitive detrimental effect. However, regarding functional recovery in stabilised patients, these effects are not clear. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to investigate dopaminergic/anticholinergic burden of (AP) on psychosocial functioning in FEP. We also examined whether cognitive impairment may mediate these effects on functioning. METHODS: A total of 157 FEP participants were assessed at study entry, and at 2 months an…

Neighborhood Characteristics and Social Functioning: Exploring Shared and Distinct Psychosocial Pathways Among Individuals at Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Recent research suggests that environmental factors may contribute to psychosis through at least partially distinct pathways. This study examined how neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation and social fragmentation relate to impaired social functioning in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) via social and contextual risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected from the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study Phase 3. Neighborhood characteristics were geocoded using participant addresses at baseline. Social and contextual risk factors were de

The impact of psychosocial factors on neurocognitive functioning in family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

BackgroundLimited research has examined neurocognitive decline in family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD), despite most caregivers being over 65 and more susceptible to age-related declines due to increased stressors. The lack of insight into how psychosocial factors interact with caregivers' neurocognitive functioning limits our ability to identify targets for reducing neurocognitive risk.ObjectiveInvestigate the effects of psychosocial factors on neurocognitive functioning of AD/ADRD caregivers.MethodsThe caregiver sample (n =

Psychosocial functioning in adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury: the roles of childhood maltreatment, borderline personality disorder and depression.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies examining psychosocial functioning in patients with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), especially in adolescents, and rates of impaired functioning in existing literature vary considerably. These variations may be attributable to further risk factors that influence psychosocial functioning. Thus, the aim of the study was to examine whether adolescent NSSI patients with childhood maltreatment (CM), a known risk factor for lower psychosocial functioning, may differ from adolescent NSSI patients without CM, and whether these differences may be explained by the…

Psychosocial functioning in patients with psychotic and non-psychotic bipolar I disorder. A comparative study with individuals with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: More than 50% of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) do not reach full psychosocial functioning, even during periods of euthymia. It has been suggested that history of psychotic symptoms is one of the factors which are associated with a worse functional outcome. The objective was to compare psychosocial functioning between patients with BD, with (BD-P), and without (BD-NP) a history of psychotic symptoms, and to examine whether the history of psychotic symptoms, or other clinical or neurocognitive variables predict psychosocial functioning. METHODS: Psychosocial functioning and…
