BACKGROUND: Improving adherence to anti-TB treatment is a public health priority in high-income, low incidence (HILI) regions. We conducted a scoping review to identify reported determinants of non-adherence in HILI settings.METHODS: Key terms related to TB, treatment and adherence were used to search MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, PsycINFO and CINAHL in June 2019. Quantitative studies examining determinants (demographic, clinical, health systems or psychosocial) of non-adherence to anti-TB treatment in HILI settings were included.RESULTS: From 10,801 results, we identified 24 relevant studi

The rates of suicide and self-harm in Northern Ireland are high, and have increased from 143 registered suicides in 1996 to 313 in 2010 and 318 in 2015. This Review summarises the epidemiology of suicidal behaviour, as well as the evidence from a small number of studies that have identified risk factors associated with high suicide rates in Northern Ireland. These risk factors were mental illness, trauma, exposure to the conflict known as the Troubles, deprivation, relationship problems, employment difficulties, financial difficulties, being LGBT, childhood adversities, and alcohol or drug use

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines challenges in post-stroke dysphagia management, including access to swallowing imaging, enteral feeding decisions, and barriers to reassessment and rehabilitation. It evaluates how healthcare systems and practice patterns influence swallowing outcomes and stroke recovery.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature emphasizes that post-stroke dysphagia is a dynamic condition requiring longitudinal management rather than a temporary acute complication. Evidence supports validated dysphagia screening followed by clinical swallowing evaluation and swallowing imagin

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is a preventable childbirth injury that remains socially devastating for women in low-resource settings. Existing evidence on obstetric fistula stigma is largely derived from treatment centres and urban settings, leaving limited understanding of the lived experiences of women in underserved rural communities. This study addresses this knowledge gap by qualitatively examining stigma, coping strategies, and support needs among obstetric fistula survivors in Kpandai District, northern Ghana.
METHODS: A qualitative exploratory descriptive design was used. Fourteen wo

INTRODUCTION: Psychosocial factors impact diabetes outcomes, yet healthcare systems remain inadequately equipped to address these needs. Research centring on the experiences of people with diabetes (PWD) can inform programme implementation, policies and partnerships to address psychosocial care needs. The goals of the diabetes, distress and disparities (3D) study are to quantify the psychosocial care needs of PWD in a large academic medical centre, generate insights regarding how psychosocial factors shape diabetes outcomes and identify modifiable determinants of psychosocial care.

Psychosocial factors are an important contributor to the aetiology of unipolar depression. This paper reviews the evidence for the contribution of different psychosocial factors, and provides an overview of the proposed neurobiological mechanisms underlying the link between psychosocial factors and depression. Implicated psychosocial factors fall into three interrelated groups: life events, socioeconomic status, and social support. The life events most strongly linked with depression are bereavement, disability or medical illness, and childhood maltreatment. Others include refugee status, work

PURPOSE: Gastrointestinal cancers represent a significant global health burden, particularly in East Asia where incidence and mortality rates remain high. Although chemotherapy is a primary treatment strategy, its adverse effects often undermine treatment adherence and patient well-being. This study aimed to examine the psychosocial determinants of self-management behaviors in gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy by applying a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 753 gastrointestinal cancer patients receiving che

Same-day antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation (SDI) is globally recommended to improve ART uptake. However, retention in care and viral suppression in South Africa remain suboptimal. This study evaluated the experiences of healthcare providers, patients, and community stakeholders in implementing the ART Same-day Counselling and Initiation (ASCI) Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), focusing on facilitators, barriers, and policy implications for improving HIV treatment outcomes. Using implementation frameworks, qualitative data from providers, patients, and community structures were analyzed

This study explored the challenges and support needs of adolescents identified as living with perinatally acquired HIV based on clinical history and early childhood treatment records to generate evidence that can inform the development of an adolescent-centred support programme. A mixed-methods, sequential exploratory design was employed. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 APHIV (mean age 15.5 years, range 12-19; 61.9% female) recruited from health facilities in rural Limpopo, South Africa. In the quantitative phase, a survey informed by qualitative fin

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric headache not only impacts an individual's psychosocial, physical, and academic functioning, but also imposes a burden on their broader systems (e.g. healthcare, financial systems). Literature regarding the bidirectional nature of the socioecological burden of pediatric headache has yet to be synthesized. This is crucial, given the importance of identifying next steps for health-policy, advocacy, research, and intervention development for pediatric headache.
RECENT FINDINGS: Globally, rates of pediatric headache have risen, with incidence and prevalence varying by

BACKGROUND: Globally, teenage pregnancy is among the most social problems, affecting 21 million adolescents aged 15-19. Due to the increased responsibility of prenatal and postnatal care for their infants without support, pregnant and parenting teenagers, tend to experience mental health problems. Factors contributing to these problems among pregnant and parenting teenagers in rural African settings have hardly received scholarly attention and, therefore, are less understood. The purpose of the study was to explore mental health and challenges among pregnant and parenting teenagers,.

BACKGROUND: Since the implementation of centralized services in the United Kingdom for those affected by cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), several studies have investigated the impact of service rationalization on the delivery of care. While large-scale quantitative studies have demonstrated improvements in a range of patient outcomes, and smaller studies have reported on the benefits and challenges of centralization from the views of health professionals, little research has attempted to capture the patient perspective. Furthermore, few studies have investigated the views of adult "returners" w

Background/Objectives: Illness uncertainty is a pervasive psychosocial experience in chronic conditions that is particularly prominent in pediatric oncology. While existing research has explored its psychological impact, a gap remains in understanding how this uncertainty evolves throughout the disease trajectory and how families collectively negotiate and manage this experience over the long term. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in the hematology ward at a pediatric hospital in Shanghai, China. Using purposive sampling, semi-structured interviews were performed with 32 participa
