[Rabies in a cat in Greenland].

We describe the first case of rabies diagnosed in a cat in Greenland. The cat showed aggressive behaviour one month after the visit of a rabid fox on the premises. Rabies is enzootic in Greenland, the arctic fox being the natural host of rabies virus. Cats are imported in increasing numbers to Greenland and the reported case stresses the need for concern in relation to a hitherto unrecognised risk of exposure to rabies virus and stresses the need to comply with the obligatory anti-rabies vaccination regimes for cats in Greenland.

Rabies in China: an update.

Human rabies cases in China have continued to increase in recent years, reaching a new peak in 2007. Parallel with an increase in human rabies deaths, a number of animal species with rabies have been reported in the majority of rabies-endemic areas. In this report, the occurrence, status, and control of rabies in both humans and animals are reviewed. Vaccines and immunoglobulin for human and animal use and postexposure prophylaxis for human are also summarized. The current strategies for rabies elimination in China are presented.

[Rabies, a neglected threat].

Rabies is a viral infection causing about 55,000 deaths worldwide every year. However, the occurrence of rabies virus is neglected not only among people living in endemic areas, but especially among travellers. Furthermore, many persons are not aware of the fact that rabies is almost always lethal. Some of the indications for a prophylactic vaccination are travelling to rabies-endemic areas, contact with possibly contaminated tissues as well as working as a veterinarian. Besides prophylactic vaccination it is possible to have post-exposure treatment after a contact with animals or tissue suspe

Travel vaccination for rabies.

Rabies is a widely distributed zoonotic disease of major public-health importance. While canine rabies has been controlled throughout most of the developed world, it remains a significant burden in developing countries, particularly in Africa and Asia. Owing to the effectiveness of local rabies control in industrialized countries, the lack of familiarity with rabies may place certain travelers to countries with a higher prevalence of rabies at higher risk for potential contact with rabid animals, requiring rabies postexposure prophylaxis. Where necessary, some travelers may need to consider ra

[Rabies in Poland in 2005].

In Poland 138 cases of animal rabies were reported in 2005. Mass oral vaccination of wild animals against rabies, which was introduced in 1993, has had a visible positive impact on the epizootic situation of rabies in Poland. In 2005 we observed about a twenty two-fold decrease in number of animal rabies cases in comparison with the year 2001. The outbreak of animal rabies, which started in 2001 in Wielkopolskie voivodeship, was still present but it is limited. Sources of wild and domestic animal rabies are mainly present in the north-east (56% of rabies cases) and south-east of the country. O

Overview of rabies in the Americas.

Between 1993 and 2002, the number of human and canine rabies cases in the Americas Region fell by approximately 80%. There were 39 human cases in 2002, 63% of them transmitted by dogs. Furthermore, human rabies transmitted by wildlife, mostly by bats is a risk to inhabitants in many countries in the Region. The objective of this study is to describe this epidemiological situation based in the information received from the countries of the Americas Region in Regional Rabies Surveillance System in the Americas (SIRVERA) administrated by the Pan American Health Organization. This sharp reduction

[Rabies diagnosis in human].

Rabies diagnosis in humans can be made by obtaining a history of exposure particularly to an animal bite, clinical symptoms and signs, neuroimaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and laboratory testing. Although diagnosis made by clinical grounds alone can be useful, this can only be limited to furious rabies. Owing to the fact that there is more than one form of rabies (furious, paralytic and atypical rabies) relying on only clinical diagnosis will undoubtedly lead to under reporting. The nonclassic or atypical rabies presents with a non specific pattern lacking pathognomomic signs

Two governmental sectors, Department of Livestock Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, have been jointly responsible for rabies control in Thailand. The aim is to have the rabies situation controlled both in humans and animals. Strategies included promotion of collaboration among governmental agencies, private sectors and publics in carrying out activities. Public campaigns are continually undertaken to raise public awareness, understanding and participation in rabies prevention and control. Providing education to t

Rabies control in Japan.

In 1957 Japan succeeded in eradicating rabies, which had been endemic since the 18th century, due to the registration and confinement of family dogs, the elimination of stray dogs, and the compulsory vaccination of dogs. At present, however, vaccination coverage of family dogs is far lower than the required level of 70%. The facilities that are presently able to investigate rabies are limited in number. In addition, few medical institutions keep rabies vaccine in stock or offer postexposure vaccination to travelers bitten by animals in rabies endemic areas. Moreover, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG

[A patient with rabies in The Netherlands].

A 49-year-old Moroccan man was admitted to hospital with chest pain and dyspnoea. The next day he had paresis of the left arm and because of respiratory arrest he was transferred to the intensive care unit. A fast-progressive neurological illness developed with flaccid tetraparesis, areflexia and a lowered level of consciousness. He died 11 days after admission. The strong clinical suspicion of rabies was confirmed by very high antibody titres in serum and CSF and by positive immunofluorescence in mice inoculated with the patient's CSF. This was the first case of rabies in the Netherlands sinc

Imaging findings in rabies.

A 10 year old Vietnamese girl presented with clinical features of an acute encephalitic process. A cerebral angiogram performed to rule out vasculitis showed narrowing at the supraclinoid internal carotid and terminal basilar arteries. A diagnosis of rabies was established at autopsy. Although the major blood vessels and basal meninges were normal it was possible that transient arterial spasm induced by the viral infection was responsible for the angiographic appearance. Other imaging findings in our patient are described with a brief review of the literature. This is only the second case of r
