Evaluation of Plasma Biomarker Utility for the Gastrointestinal Acute Radiation Syndrome in Non-human Primates after Partial Body Irradiation with Minimal Bone Marrow Sparing through Correlation with Tissue and Histological Analyses.

Exposure to total- and partial-body irradiation following a nuclear or radiological incident result in the potentially lethal acute radiation syndromes of the gastrointestinal and hematopoietic systems in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Radiation-induced damage to the gastrointestinal tract is observed within days to weeks post-irradiation. Our objective in this study was to evaluate plasma biomarker utility for the gastrointestinal acute radiation syndrome in non-human primates after partial body irradiation with minimal bone marrow sparing through correlation with tissue and histological

Development and repair of cataract induced by ultraviolet radiation.

BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological investigations show a correlation between cataract development and the dose of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) received. It is experimentally well established that exposure of animal eyes to UVR induces cataract. Most cataracts develop as a gradual increase in lens opacity. Despite this, current estimations of toxicity for cataract are based on the concept that cataract is a binary event. Moreover, current exposure limits for UVR are based on subjective inspections with slit lamp microscopy. PURPOSE: The first purpose of the present study was to determine a sta

Antioxidant properties of probiotics and their protective effects in the pathogenesis of radiation-induced enteritis and colitis.

Radiation therapy has become one of the most important treatment modalities for human malignancy, but certain immediate and delayed side-effects on the normal surrounding tissues limit the amount of effective radiation that can be administered. After exposure of the abdominal region to ionizing radiation, nearly all patients experience transient symptoms of irradiation of the bowel. Acute-phase symptoms may persist for a short time, yet long-term complications can represent significant clinical conditions with high morbidity. Data from both experimental studies and clinical trials suggest the

Identification of new targets for the protection against radiation-induced brain injury through integrated dual-omics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced brain injury (RIBI) is a serious complication of cranial radiotherapy, yet its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to identify novel therapeutic targets for RIBI through integrated dual-omics analysis. METHODS: A mouse model of RIBI was established using 15 Gy of whole-brain X-ray irradiation. Behavioral tests and histopathological examinations were performed to validate cognitive dysfunction and neuronal damage. Hippocampal tissues were analyzed via transcriptomics and metabolomics to uncover key molecular changes. RESULTS: Transcriptomic anal

[Clinico-radiometric studies of the eye in radioactive contamination].

The aim of the study was assessment of local and remote effects of radioactive substances on ocular media and development of measures to remove radionuclides from the eye. Radioactive substances getting into the eye in the form of aerosols, dust, or gaseous mixtures are unevenly distributed in it. The highest radioactivity was found on the skin of the eyelids and orbit, particularly so on the eyelashes and eyebrows, the least one on the cornea and in the conjunctival cavity. A follow-up of 8 to 17 years showed that timely removal of radionuclides from ocular surface prevented the development o

[Comparative evaluation of the treatment of radiation skin injuries with oxycort ointment and Peruvian balsam].

The regenerating action of Peruvian balm and oxycort was compared in experiments on rats with experimental radiation skin injuries. Radiation skin ulcers entailed severe morphological and biochemical abnormalities, there was also observed an unstable healing provided the treatment was not applied. Oxycort ointment slightly reduced the period of healing. However, formation of secondary microdefects was conducive to recurrent ulcer in the future. Peruvian balm exerted a pronounced bactericidal action, strongly intensified the reparative processes, and, therefore, reduced the period of healing an

Electron vs proton FLASH radiation on murine skin toxicity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dose-response modification of FLASH has previously been established for acute skin toxicity in protons. This study used a similar experimental setup to quantify the dose-response modification of electron FLASH irradiation for acute skin- and late fibrotic toxicity in mice. The setup similarity enabled quantitative comparison of the acute skin response for electrons to protons. METHOD: Female unanaesthetised C3D2F1 mice were restrained with the right hindleg fixated and submerged in a water bath for horizontal electron irradiation at 16 MeV. Mice were randomised in grou

Antioxidant treatment ameliorates germ cell apoptosis induced by a high-dose ionizing irradiation in rats.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ionizing radiation results in cytotoxic and genotoxic effects caused mainly by the oxidative damage. In the present study, we investigated the radioprotective effect of novel antioxidant cocktail on germ cell apoptosis and spermatogenesis in rats subjected to whole body radiation (WBIR). METHODS: Adult male rats weighing 250-270 g were divided into four groups, eight rats each. Group 1 served as untreated control, group 2 received an IP single dose of antioxidant cocktail (1 ml). Group 3 was exposed to a WBIR (6 Gy). Group 4 received antioxidant cocktail before WBIR. R

Protective effect of polydatin on radiation-induced injury of intestinal epithelial and endothelial cells.

This study aimed to examine the radioprotective effect of polydatin (PD) on crypt and endothelial cells of the small intestines of C57BL/6 mice that received abdominal irradiation (IR). Mice were treated with 6 MV X-ray (20 Gy) abdominal IR at a dose rate of 200 cGy/min. Thirty minutes before or after IR, mice were intraperitoneally injected with PD. The rate of survival of the mice at 30 days after IR was determined. The duodenum (upper small intestine), jejunum (middle small intestine), and ileum (lower small intestine) were collected and subjected to hematoxylin and eosin staining. Tissue s

[Indices of body resistance to overheating in the dynamics of acute radiation lesion].

Three hours after irradiation in a dose of 800 R rats proved to be less resistant to following overheating (45 degrees C) than control animals. An increase of resistance to acute overheating was revealed at the end of 3 days after the irradiation. At the height of the radiation disease (the end of the 5th day) the period of occurrence of heat stroke and the duration of rat survival failed to differ from those in the control animals. The dynamics of response to overheating correlated to some extent with that of the thyroid gland and the adrenal gland functions in the irradiated animals.

[Radioprotective effect of pyrazolone derivatives].

The intraperitoneal injection of analgin (1000 mg/kg), antipurine (400 mg/kg), amidopyrine (100 mg/kg) 3 hours before the irradiation of mice in a dose of 800 R led to survival of 30 to 45% of the animals (against 12.5% in control) and to increase in the average duration of life of the animals that perished. 80-95% of mice survived the period of "intestinal deaths" (the 7th day after the irradiation) after combined prophylactic use of purasolone derivatives and cystamine before the irradiation of these animals in a dose of 1050 R. The radioprotective effect of pyrasolone derivatives given in t

Radioprotective effects of ethanolic extract from walnut kernel internal septum on lethal X-ray exposure in Wistar rats.

This study assessed the radioprotective efficacy of an ethanolic extract from the walnut kernel internal septum (Juglans regia L.) in Wistar rats exposed to a lethal X-ray dose of 6.73 Gy. The extract was administered at 400, 1600, or 6400 mg/kg, either 2 h before (pre-treatment, n = 7 per group) or after (post-treatment, n = 9 per group) irradiation, with survival monitored over 30 and 60 days. In pre-treated rats, the high dose (6400 mg/kg) consistently provided full protection, surpassing radiation-only controls which showed significant mortality (42.9 ± 7 % at 30 days and 28.5 ± 7 % at 60

Mechanism of blueberry anthocyanins in ameliorating radiation-induced intestinal injury through gut microbiota modulation.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced intestinal injury denotes structural and functional impairment of the intestines resulting directly or indirectly from ionizing radiation, such as that employed in radiation therapy for malignant tumors in the abdominal or pelvic regions, within the treatment area. It is a prevalent and severe consequence of radiation therapy for abdominal and pelvic tumors, greatly affecting treatment outcomes and patients' quality of life. Western medicine primarily employs symptomatic management, including medical drug therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, nutritional support the
