Radionuclide imaging of the painful hip arthroplasty: positron-emission tomography versus triple-phase bone scanning.

Two major complications of hip replacement are loosening and infection. Reliable differentiation between these pathological processes is difficult since both may be accompanied by similar symptoms. Our aim was to assess the diagnostic ability of triple-phase bone scanning (TPBS) and positron-emission tomography (PET) to detect and differentiate these complications in patients with a hip arthroplasty. Both TPBS and PET were performed in 63 patients (92 prostheses). The radiotracer for PET imaging was (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Image interpretation was performed according to qualitative and

Assessment of differential branch pulmonary blood flow: a comparative study of phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging and radionuclide lung perfusion imaging.

OBJECTIVES: To test whether magnetic resonance (MR) imaging can be used to assess differential lung blood flow as accurately as isotope lung perfusion studies in patients investigated for congenital heart disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: Radionuclide lung perfusion and MR imaging were performed in 12 children with suspected unilateral branch pulmonary artery stenosis (mean age 12.1 (5.9) years, range 3.1-17.2 years). A non-breath hold, fast gradient echo phase contrast MR sequence was used to measure flow in the pulmonary trunk and one pulmonary artery to calculate differential flow. Good agreem

Application of Radionuclide Myocardial Imaging in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents a major phenotype of heart failure and accounts for over 50% of clinical cases. The complex pathophysiological mechanism involved in HFpEF promotes diagnostic difficulties and limited treatment options, posing a significant challenge in modern cardiology. Conventional imaging methods have significant limitations in comprehensively evaluating the heterogeneous etiologies and key pathological mechanisms of HFpEF. Radionuclide myocardial imaging, through the application of targeted radioactive tracers, enables in vivo, non-invasive

Radionuclide imaging of hypoxia: Where are we now? Special attention to cancer of the cervix uteri.

Cancer of the cervix is the fourth commonest malignancy in women worldwide and it also ranks fourth as the cause of cancer related mortality in women. Hypoxia is a common characteristic of solid tumours and cervical cancer is no exception. Hypoxia is associated with increased aggressiveness, risk of invasion and metastasis. Tumour hypoxia also results in resistance to both radiation therapy and chemotherapy leading to a poorer prognosis. In-vivo measurement of tumour hypoxia is vital in oncologic practice because it can predict outcome and identify patients with a worse prognosis. Mapping of t

Dynamic radionuclide imaging as a means of evaluating vascular perfusion of the upper extremity: a preliminary report.

Vascular competence in the upper extremities of 44 patients was evaluated by three-phase bone scans consisting of rapid sequence dynamic radionuclide imaging (DRI), an immediate postinjection "blood pool" image, and a 3- to 4-hour delayed image. Findings were correlated with definitive anatomy determined by arteriography, operative findings, or both, in 50 extremities. DRI provided the correct diagnosis in all but four extremities (92%). Limited resolution precluded precise anatomic definition of aneurysms in three limbs and of digital artery occlusion, with adequate collateral circulation in

The relationship of computed tomography, gray-scale ultrasonography and radionuclide imaging in the evaluation of hepatic masses.

Hepatic scintigraphy, gray-scale ultrasonography, and computed tomography have proven to be useful in the initial detection and evaluation of hepatic masses. These studies appear to be complimentary since each provides information not available from the others. Hepatic scintigraphy is currently the method of choice for the initial evaluation of the liver for mass lesions as it is easily performed, relatively inexpensive, and affords detectability of intrahepatic mass lesions at least as great as that of ultrasonography or computed tomography. When a definite or suspected abnormality is seen by

Molecular imaging and radionuclide therapy of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma in the era of genomic characterization of disease subgroups.

In recent years, advancement in genetics has profoundly helped to gain a more comprehensive molecular, pathogenic, and prognostic picture of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs). Newly discovered molecular targets, particularly those that target cell membranes or signaling pathways have helped move nuclear medicine in the forefront of PPGL precision medicine. This is mainly based on the introduction and increasing experience of various PET radiopharmaceuticals across PPGL genotypes quickly followed by implementation of novel radiotherapies and revised imaging algorithms. Particularly,

Comparison of radionuclide imaging and ultrasonography in the differentiation of acute testicular torsion and inflammatory testicular disease.

PURPOSE: Torsion of the testis is a urologic emergency that requires early diagnosis and prompt surgical treatment for testicular survival. However, the early differential diagnosis of acute testicular torsion from epididymitis or orchitis is often difficult. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate and compare the value of Tc-99m pertechnetate radionuclide imaging and ultrasonography in the differentiation of acute testicular torsion and inflammatory testicular diseases. METHODS: Twenty patients (age range, 5 to 38 years) with possible acute testicular torsion from July 2000 to Ju

Multicenter comparison of radionuclide calibrators and SPECT/CT protocols for quantitative 177Lu   imaging in clinical practice.

PURPOSE: Following the clinical success of [Formula: see text]-based therapies for neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer, accurate quantification of [Formula: see text]  using radionuclide calibrators (RNCs) and SPECT/CT is gaining importance as prerequisite for accurate treatment delivery and dosimetry. However, the lack of standardization can introduce inter-system variability, compromising multi-center clinical trials. This study aimed to assess the accuracy and variability of [Formula: see text]  measurements using RNCs and SPECT/CT across different systems and hospitals. METHODS: A u

Expression of glutamate carboxypeptidase II in the glial tumor recurrence evaluated in vivo using radionuclide imaging.

Glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCP), also known as prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) has been found to be expressed in glioma vasculature in in-vitro studies. GCP expression can be traced with the use of [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT used routinely for prostate cancer imaging. The aim of this paper was to analyze GCP expression in the recurrent glial tumors in vivo. 34 patients (pts.) aged 44.5 ± 10.3 years with suspicion of recurrence of histologically confirmed glioma grade III (6 pts.) and grade IV (28 pts.) were included in the study. All patients underwent contrast-enhanced MR and [68Ga

Comparative radionuclide imaging of metastatic insular carcinoma of the thyroid: value of technetium-99m-(V)DMSA.

We report a case of metastatic insular carcinoma of the thyroid evaluated with 201TI, 99mTc-MIBI, 99mTc-(V)DMSA, 99mTc-MDP and 131I whole-body scans, which were obtained after total thyroidectomy. For the majority of lesions detected in the skeleton and soft tissue, 131I images were generally available, although most were visualized easier with 99mTc-(V)DMSA. Technetium-99m-MDP images were considered better than 99mTc-(V)DMSA images in showing bone lesions but not soft-tissue lesions. Both 201TI and 99mTc-MIBI scans provided sufficient advantage to exhibit neck and mediastinal metastases, but

Cat-scratch disease. Subtle vertebral bone marrow abnormalities demonstrated by MR imaging and radionuclide bone scan.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a benign, self-limited cause of lymphadenitis occurring mainly in children and young adults. Its etiology is a delicate, small gram-negative pleomorphic bacillus. Less common manifestations of CSD are seen in 5% of patients and include Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome (with enlargement of the preauricular nodes), parotid gland enlargement, encephalitis, radiculopathy, pneumonitis, erythema nodosum, thrombocytopenia, and lytic bone lesions. We describe a patient in whom magnetic resonance imaging initially detected subtle vertebral bone marrow abnormalities that c

Cerebrospinal fluid circulation and associated intracranial dynamics. A radiologic investigation using MR imaging and radionuclide cisternography.

UNLABELLED: AIMS OF THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION: Observations made in a preliminary study of pulsatile cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain motions using MR imaging called for a reconsideration of the CSF flow model currently accepted. The following questions were addressed: 1) The nature of the CSF-circulation, e.g., the magnitude and pattern of pulsatile and bulk flow; 2) The driving forces of the CSF circulation and assessment of the role of associated hemodynamics and brain motions; 3) The major routes for the absorption of CSF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: CSF flow and associated hemodynamics were

Radionuclide Selection Influences Imaging Outcomes in Immuno-PET with a Brain-Penetrating Anti-Amyloid-β Antibody.

Bispecific antibodies exploiting receptor-mediated transcytosis offer a promising strategy to overcome limited blood-brain barrier permeability in Alzheimer disease immunotherapy and imaging. Lecanemab-Fab8D3 (Lec-Fab8D3), a bispecific amyloid-β (Aβ) antibody with enhanced brain delivery, may complement lecanemab immunotherapy as an immuno-PET imaging agent. Here, we systematically assess how the choice of radionuclide affects PET detection of Lec-Fab8D3 within the brain to evaluate its potential as a companion diagnostic. Methods: Lec-Fab8D3 was conjugated to an octadentate derivative of desf
