This study examined the immunological responsiveness of the myelin deficient (md) rat, and its immune response to transplanted allogeneic glial cells, with and without immunosuppression therapy. Reperfusion of ischemic hindlimbs leads to leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN)-dependent lung injury. Pulmonary mast cells are capable of synthesizing LTB4 and are potential mediators of this inflammatory response. An infusion of compatible normal bone marrow stimulated bone resorption in both unthymectomized and thymectomized Fatty/Orl-op osteopetrotic rats. Bone resorption was not stimulated by compatible normal thymic grafts in either unthymectomized or thymectomized mutants. It is concluded that the thymus is not fundamental in the cure of osteopetrosis in this strain of osteopetrotic rat and that the defect lies in myeloid rather than thymic regulation of osteoclastic function.

A new mutant developing spontaneous hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma has been discovered among Long Evans rats. Hepatitis appears suddenly in the mutant, Long Evans Cinnamon (LEC) rats, three to four months after birth. Characteristic clinical signs of the hepatitis are jaundice, bilirubinuria, subcutaneous bleeding and loss of body weight. Hereditary polycystic kidney disease (PKD) was observed in a Han:SPRD rat mutant. Cysts were of tubular origin and occurrence was more pronounced in males than in females. In male rats polycystic kidney disease was associated with a marked elevation of systolic blood pressure. Therefore this rat mutant can be considered as a laboratory animal model for renal hypertension associated with adult polycystic kidney disease in man.
