Abnormalities of the acoustic startle reflex and reaction time in gilles de la tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To study the startle reflex and the effect of the startle reflex stimulus over reaction time (start-react effect) in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). METHOD: Ten GTS patients and ten matched healthy volunteers underwent a simple RT paradigm (4 blocks of 50 trials). Forty acoustic startle reflex stimuli (110 dB) were randomly delivered with a 20% occurrence probability and presented unexpectedly at the same time as the imperative stimuli of the RT. Variables of interest were: amplitude, onset latency, degree of spread and rate of habituation of the startle response, and RT and

A comparison of acoustic reflex and auditory brain stem response screening of high-risk infants.

This investigation was undertaken to explore the feasibility of screening for hearing impairment in an intensive care nursery population with a combined acoustic stapedius reflex-ABR approach. Acoustic reflex threshold measurements (AR) were made on intensive care nursery patients in an existing ABR screening program. Pass-fail results were determined for the two methods, separately and in combination. AR screening identified all 10 ears that failed the ABR screen. The cost savings of screening with a combined AR-ABR approach was determined for various pass-fail criteria. The results suggest t

The normal middle ear reflex thresholds towards white noise and acoustic clicks in young adults.

The acoustic middle ear muscle reflex thresholds towards white noise and fast sequences of clicks were determined in 46 normal-hearing young adults using electronic averaging. For white noise the thresholds were normally distributed around an average value of 72.7 dB SPL. With sequences of clicks the threshold depended above all on the click repetition rate within each stimulus sequence. When the repetition was 128/sec the threshold distribution was almost normal around an average value of 73.9 dB SPL. For the individual test subject there was good correlation between the white noise and the c

Acoustic Analysis of Voluntary Coughs, Throat Clearings, and Induced Reflexive Coughs in a Healthy Population.

Cough efficacy is considered a reliable predictor of the aspiration risk in head and neck cancer patients with radiation-associated dysphagia. Currently, coughing is assessed perceptually or aerodynamically. The goal of our research is to develop methods of acoustic cough analysis. In this study, we examined in a healthy population the acoustical differences between three protective maneuvers: voluntary cough, voluntary throat clearing, and induced reflexive cough. Forty healthy participants were included in this study. Voluntary cough, voluntary throat clearing, and reflexive cough samples we

Frequency tuning of medial-olivocochlear-efferent acoustic reflexes in humans as functions of probe frequency.

The medial-olivocochlear (MOC) acoustic reflex is thought to provide frequency-specific feedback that adjusts the gain of cochlear amplification, but little is known about how frequency specific the reflex actually is. We measured human MOC tuning through changes in stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) from 40-dB-SPL tones at probe frequencies (f(p)s) near 0.5, 1.0, and 4.0 kHz. MOC activity was elicited by 60-dB-SPL ipsilateral, contralateral, or bilateral tones or half-octave noise bands, with elicitor frequency (f(e)) varied in half-octave steps. Tone and noise elicitors produc

Acoustic reflexes to Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired individuals.

Harmonic complexes generated with positive or negative Schroeder-phases may result in differences in cochlear excitation, even though their long-term spectra and amplitudes are equal. As a measure of possible differences in cochlear excitation resulting from these harmonic complexes, thresholds and growth of the acoustic reflex were assessed in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired subjects. Harmonic complexes with fundamental frequencies of 50, 100, and 200 Hz were constructed with positive and negative-Schroeder phases. In normal-hearing subjects, acoustic reflex thresholds for the 50- and 100

Acoustic middle ear reflexes in laboratory animals using clinical equipment: technical considerations.

Acoustic middle ear muscle reflexes (AMR) were examined in nonanesthetized rabbits using clinical oto-impedance devices to determine the feasibility of utilizing clinically available instruments in studies of laboratory animals, particularly with regard to parameters such as probe tone frequency and intensity. The Karolinska Sjukhuset clinical impedance instrument and the Madsen Electronics ZO174 standard clinical impedance meter were used. The results of this study show that reliable AMRs and tympanograms can be obtained from rabbits with both clinical instruments. Probe tone frequencies in t

The role of the Ventral Nucleus of the Trapezoid Body in the auditory prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex.

Cholinergic signaling is essential to mediate the auditory prepulse inhibition (PPI), an operational measure of sensorimotor gating, that refers to the reduction of the acoustic startle reflex (ASR) when a low-intensity, non-startling acoustic stimulus (the prepulse) is presented just before the onset of the acoustic startle stimulus. The cochlear root neurons (CRNs) are the first cells of the ASR circuit to receive cholinergic inputs from non-olivocochlear neurons of the ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (VNTB) and subsequently decrease their neuronal activity in response to auditory prep

Evaluation of the acoustic (stapedius) reflex test in children and adolescents with peripheral facial nerve palsy.

INTRODUCTION: The stapedius nerve is one of the branches of the facial nerve in the temporal bone. It supplies the stapedius muscle, which is responsible for the attenuation reflex that protects the inner ear from loud noises. The stapedius (acoustic) reflex (SR) test is useful in identifying the site of facial nerve injury. The return of the SR (acoustic) to normal after an injury is a good prognostic factor in the treatment of facial nerve palsy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of FNP on the SR (acoustic) response and determine the acoustic reflex threshold (ART)

The relationship between the acoustic reflex threshold and levels of loudness categories in hearing-impaired listeners.

When applied as a tool for hearing aid fitting, categorical loudness scaling (CLS) is time consuming and not feasible in all subjects. It is therefore desirable to use objective measures for accurate prediction of loudness categories among hearing-impaired individuals. The present study aimed at exploring whether loudness perception at the ART is constant with varying hearing threshold. Seventy-five subjects with various degrees of hearing impairment, measurable acoustic reflex and normal middle ear function participated. The HTLs, ARTs and the levels of six loudness categories at frequencies

Taste and acoustic reflex after recovery from facial muscle paralysis in patients with facial nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: There are few studies on taste or acoustic reflex (AR) in patients after recovery from facial muscle paralysis (FMP). OBJECTIVES: To investigate the recovery of AR and taste in patients who have recovered from peripheral facial nerve palsy (FNP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 25 patients whose FMP had resolved after treatment for FNP. A difference in taste threshold of ≤4 dB between the affected and unaffected sides in the electric taste test was defined as normal; an AR on the affected side was assessed to be ≥90% of the AR on the unaffected side was defined as norma

Normative Wideband Reflectance, Equivalent Admittance at the Tympanic Membrane, and Acoustic Stapedius Reflex Threshold in Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) measures such as pressure reflectance, parameterized by absorbance and group delay, equivalent admittance at the tympanic membrane (TM), and acoustic stapedius reflex threshold (ASRT) describe middle ear function across a wide frequency range, compared with traditional tests employing a single frequency. The objective of this study was to obtain normative data using these tests for a group of normal-hearing adults and investigate test-retest reliability using a longitudinal design. DESIGN: A longitudinal prospective design was used to obtain norm

High levels of sound pressure: acoustic reflex thresholds and auditory complaints of workers with noise exposure.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical evaluation of subjects with occupational noise exposure has been difficult due to the discrepancy between auditory complaints and auditory test results. This study aimed to evaluate the contralateral acoustic reflex thresholds of workers exposed to high levels of noise, and to compare these results to the subjects' auditory complaints. METHODS: This clinical retrospective study evaluated 364 workers between 1998 and 2005; their contralateral acoustic reflexes were compared to auditory complaints, age, and noise exposure time by chi-squared, Fisher's, and Spearman's

Apomorphine, d-amphetamine, strychnine and yohimbine do not alter prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex.

Rats were presented with noise bursts alone or noise bursts 60 ms after presentation of either a 60 dB or an 80 dB prepulse after injection of the dopamine agonists apomorphine (3 mg/kg) or d-amphetamine (4 mg/kg), the glycine antagonist strychnine (1.5 mg/kg) or the alpha 2 antagonist yohimbine (5 mg/kg). Presentation of prepulses inhibited startle, with greater inhibition following an 80 dB versus 60 dB prepulse. Apomorphine, d-amphetamine and strychnine increased overall startle levels but did not attenuate prepulse inhibition, since the absolute change in startle following prepulse present

Ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds in neonates and in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired pre-school children.

Acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) were measured ipsilaterally in 20 neonates, 220 children with normal hearing and 56 children with sensorineural hearing loss, using a probe-tone frequency of 660 Hz. Middle-ear function was assessed with tympanometry (220 Hz probe tone) in all children. All the neonates had normal tympanograms and middle- ear pressure better than -- 1kPa, even a few hours after birth. The mean acoustic reflex threshold (ART) averaged over the frequency range 0.5-4 kHz was 85 dB HL, with standard deviations (SD) varying between 5 and 9 dB. With broad-band noise (BBN), the mean A
