The presence of Tregs does not preclude immunity to reinfection with Leishmania braziliensis.

Leishmania spp. cause a broad spectrum of diseases collectively known as leishmaniasis. Leishmania braziliensis is the main etiological agen … p3(+) cells accumulated at the site of infection and in dLNs. We next investigated the outcome of a reinfection with L. braziliensis in terms of Treg distribution and disease reactivation. Interestingly, a secondary inoculation with L. braziliensis did not preclude an efficient recall response to L. braziliensis at a distal site, despite the presence of Tregs …

Characterization of a Cryptosporidium muris infection and reinfection in CF-1 mice.

To establish control values for circulating cells and immune associated organs over the course of a self-limiting Cryptosporidium muris infection and rechallenge infection, mice were sacrificed at intervals starting before oral inoculation and ending after oocyst shedding had ceased. These values were used in other experiments to evaluate changes in these parameters induced by a single dose glucocorticoid immunosuppression model and in other immunosuppression studies. Flow cytometry counts of circulating T-lymphocytes and neutrophils, differential leukocyte counts, leukocyte morphology, spleen

Pubertal development predicts resistance to infection and reinfection with Schistosoma japonicum.

BACKGROUND: In communities where Schistosoma species are endemic, the prevalence and intensity of schistosomiasis is disproportionately high … .01). Following praziquantel treatment, increased DHEA-S levels were associated with resistance to reinfection (P = .006). The intensity of reinfection among individuals with high DHEA-S levels was 42% lower, compared with individuals with low DHEA-S levels, even after adjusting for age, baseline intensity of S. japonicum infection, village, sex and water co …

Resistance to reinfection in rats induced by irradiated metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis.

A study was made to observe the association between the resistance to reinfection induced by irradiated metacercariae (MC) of Clonorchis sinensis and antigen specific Th1- and Th2-type cytokine productions in rats. Rats were infected with 20 MC of C. sinensis, previously exposed to a single dose of gamma irradiation, which varied from 0 to 100 Gy. All of them, single dose of 12 Gy showed higher IgG antibody titer with lowest worm recovery. Thus, 50 MC were used to challenge infection in rats previously infected with 20 MC irradiated at 12 Gy and the highest resistance to challenge infection wa…

Infection with Cryptosporidium hominis and reinfection with Cryptosporidium parvum in a transplanted ileum.

A transplanted ileum was found to be infected with Cryptosporidium hominis 6 days after transplantation. Although the infection resolved, the ileum was later found to be infected with Cryptosporidium parvum. The presence of the parasite was not always correlated with diarrhea. No other gastrointestinal symptom was ever detected. Treatment with azithromycin and paromomycin apparently failed.

Trypanosoma cruzi reinfections in mice determine the severity of cardiac damage.

In two murine models we studied Trypanosoma cruzi reinfection in the acute and chronic phase of experimental Chagas' disease in order to elucidate the relevance of reinfections in determining the variability of cardiac symptoms and the irreversible cardiac damage. They were followed for 120 and 600 days post infection (p.i.) for the acute and chronic model, respectively. Reinfected mice reached higher parasitaemia levels than infected mice. The survival was 33 and 21% in the chronic phase for mice reinfected in the acute phase and 13% for mice reinfected in the chronic stage at the end of the …

Second episode of tuberculosis in an HIV-infected child: relapse or reinfection?

We report a case of an HIV-infected child with a second episode of tuberculosis 22 months after completing antituberculosis treatment. DNA fingerprinting of organisms from both episodes showed an identical strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We believe this to be the first case of confirmed relapsed tuberculosis in an HIV-infected child, and suggest that a longer course of antituberculosis treatment be given to such children. ¿ 2000 The British Infection Society.

Helicobacter pylori reinfection with identical organisms: transmission by the patients' spouses.

Reinfection with Helicobacter pylori after eradication is responsible for the recurrence of duodenal ulcer disease. The mode of transmission has not yet been established. In this study, 18 patients with chronic duodenal ulcers in whom H pylori had been eradicated with amoxicillin and metronidazole were entered into a prospective follow up study. Control endoscopies were performed 4, 8, 14, 27, and 43 months after starting treatment and the results of direct tests were compared with the kinetics of H pylori specific IgG titres. After eradication there was a noticeable and consistent fall in ant…

Role of coproantibody in clinical protection of children during reinfection with rotavirus.

Rotavirus is the major cause of severe, dehydrating infantile gastroenteritis. Infection is limited to the gut, but the relative roles of serum and secretory copro-immunoglobulin A (IgA) in protection are unclear. Specific copro-IgA is predictive of duodenal antirotaviral IgA and correlates with virus-neutralizing coproantibody. Copro-IgA conversion is a more sensitive marker of rotavirus reinfection than seroconversion. We measured rotavirus reinfections by copro-IgA conversion prospectively in 35 children recruited at a time of severe rotavirus illness. The children were followed up longitud…

[A mini epidemic of varicella zoster virus reinfection at a department of hematology].

Whereas primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) (chickenpox) and reactivation of VZV (shingles) are common and recognized, clinical reinfection with VZV is rare. A little epidemic of presumed reinfection with VZV in six immune-compromised adults is presented here. The epidemic lasted for three months, during which a healthy young woman also developed a primary VZV infection in the form of chickenpox. In the immune-compromised patients, the clinical picture was dominated by disseminated, prolonged and frequently haemorrhagic and necrotic eruptions which may cause diagnostic difficul…

Hemichorea associated with varicella-zoster reinfection and endocarditis. A case report.

A 20-year-old woman developed transient right-sided hemichoreatic movements after household exposure to varicella-zoster. Some days before the appearance of involuntary movements a vesicular rash had occurred. About 6 months later an elevated IgG serum titer against varicella virus was found and two-dimensional echocardiography showed signs of an endocarditis. During the following 2 months the IgG value returned to within the normal range and the choreatic movements disappeared almost totally. The possibility is discussed that endocarditis had been caused and maintained by serum antibodies to

Reinfection and infection rates of ascariasis in relation to seasonal variation in the Philippines.

Stool examinations of 320 primary school children for eggs of Ascaris revealed a prevalence of 74.0 percent. Reinfection and infection rates were determined on a monthly basis with egg-positive subjects treated correspondingly. Due to dropouts of subjects, only 154 children completed the 12-month observation. About 15% of children remained negative after treatment during one year but 85% got reinfected, with those reinfected only once being the highest then those reinfected twice, followed by those reinfected more than twice in a year. Of the 203 Ascaris worms collected 69% were females and 31…

Genome-wide association study of chlamydia reinfection in African American women.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is a bacterium that causes chlamydia, the most diagnosed bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world. In the U.S., chlamydia is most prevalent among non-Hispanic African American (AA) individuals, implying substantial racial disparity. Despite prevention and control efforts, reinfection is common, suggesting that some individuals have insufficient protective immunity to Ct. To better understand the genetically mediated risks of chlamydia reinfection, we sought to identify genetic loci associated with reinfection using a Genome-Wide Associa…
