Use of Social Media for Pharmacovigilance Activities: Key Findings and Recommendations from the Vigi4Med Project.

The large-scale use of social media by the population has gained the attention of stakeholders and researchers in various fields. In the domain of pharmacovigilance, this new resource was initially considered as an opportunity to overcome underreporting and monitor the safety of drugs in real time in close connection with patients. Research is still required to overcome technical challenges related to data extraction, annotation, and filtering, and there is not yet a clear consensus concerning the systematic exploration and use of social media in pharmacovigilance. Although the literature has

A Stepwise Animated Video Modeling App With Token-Based Reinforcement for Toilet Training in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Pilot Study Using Multiple-Baseline and Single-Case Designs.

BACKGROUND: Toilet training is a major challenge for children with autism spectrum disorder. While mobile health offers accessible support, few apps specifically address the complex chaining required for independent toileting routines. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a caregiver-mediated mobile app using stepwise animated video modeling with token-based reinforcement support for toilet training in young children with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: A multiple-baseline design across participants (urination training) and a single-case A

High Hostility Among Smokers Predicts Slower Recognition of Positive Facial Emotion.

High levels of trait hostility are associated with wide-ranging interpersonal deficits and heightened physiological response to social stressors. These deficits may be attributable in part to individual differences in the perception of social cues. The present study evaluated the ability to recognize facial emotion among 48 high hostile (HH) and 48 low hostile (LH) smokers and whether experimentally-manipulated acute nicotine deprivation moderated relations between hostility and facial emotion recognition. A computer program presented series of pictures of faces that morphed from a neutral emo

Treating selective mutism in a paediatric rehabilitation patient by altering environmental reinforcement contingencies.

Selective mutism is a disorder which can cause severe social and academic impairment, and for which a wide variety of treatment approaches have been used, with varying degrees of success. Selective mutism can be conceptualized as the lack of generalization of a class of operant responses (e.g. audible and comprehensible verbalizations) across environmental contexts. The rehabilitation hospital setting, in which the patient is seen daily by multiple people in multiple settings, is particularly well-suited for implementing a systematic behavioural intervention to establish verbal behaviour and s

Functions of maladaptive behavior in intellectual and developmental disabilities: behavior categories and topographies.

Research has shown that different maladaptive behavior categories may be maintained by different contingencies. We examined whether behavior categories or behavior topographies determine functional properties. The Questions about Behavioral Function with its five subscales (Attention, Escape, Nonsocial, Physical, and Tangible) was completed by direct care staff for one target behavior for each of 115 adults with varying degrees of intellectual disabilities. In the first step we examined the functional properties of three broad behavior categories (self-injurious behavior [SIB], stereotypic beh

Social anxiety and alcohol consumption: the role of alcohol expectancies and reward sensitivity.

Although the relationship between social anxiety and alcohol consumption has been the subject of extensive exploration, previous studies have failed to draw consistent conclusions about the nature of this relationship. Gray [Gray, J.A. (1970). The psychophysiological basis of introversion-extraversion. Behaviour Research and Therapy, 8, 249-266] suggested that individuals who are sensitive to reward are likely to place themselves in potentially rewarding environments (e.g. pubs and clubs). As such these individuals will have a greater chance to experience and vicariously observe the effects of

Caregiver burden in forensic mental health settings: social impacts on caregivers of individuals with severe mental disorders.

Caregivers of individuals with severe mental disorders face profound challenges, particularly when patients have criminal histories. Social functioning and perceived social support are central to caregiver burden. This cross-sectional study investigated the role of sociodemographic, illness-related, social, and support factors in 160 family caregivers of forensic inpatients. The Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Social Adaptation Self-Evaluation Scale were used. Caregivers exposed to patient violence reported greater burden (β = -.69, p < .001

How Implementation Context Shapes Clinician Acceptance and Engagement with Guideline-Based Clinical Decision Support Systems in Primary Care: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Guideline-based clinical decision support (CDS) tools have become central to promoting evidence-based, high-quality primary care. Despite widespread implementation, clinician adoption and sustained use remain inconsistent. Existing research has typically examined technological usability or organizational implementation factors separately, providing limited understanding of how these influences interact in real-world primary care settings. This study examined how organizational implementation context and clinician technology acceptance jointly shape adoption and sustained use of gui

Self-Injurious behavior in rhesus macaques: Issues and challenges.

Some monkeys housed in research facilities develop abnormal behavior ranging from stereotypic to the more serious condition of self-injurious behavior (SIB). We initially sought to understand how and why monkeys engaged in SIB and more importantly why only a small percentage of laboratory monkeys, with seemingly similar housing and background, developed this disorder. Of particular importance was the recognition that different pathways might lead to SIB and that strong individual differences would affect the manifestation of this disorder and the response to treatment. We developed a comprehen

Cognitive performance as a behavioral phenotype associated with cocaine self-administration in female and male socially housed monkeys.

Considerable research has suggested that certain cognitive domains may contribute to cocaine misuse. However, there are gaps in the literature regarding whether cognitive performance before drug exposure predicts susceptibility to cocaine self-administration and how cognitive performance relates to future cocaine intake. Thus, the present study aimed to examine cognitive performance, as measured using automated CANTAB cognitive battery, prior to and following acquisition of cocaine self-administration under a concurrent drug vs. food choice procedure in female and male socially housed cynomolg

Possible Role of CRF-Hcrt Interaction in the Infralimbic Cortex in the Emergence and Maintenance of Compulsive Alcohol-Seeking Behavior.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic, relapsing disorder that is characterized by the compulsive use of alcohol despite numerous health, social, and economic consequences. Initially, the use of alcohol is driven by positive reinforcement. Over time, however, alcohol use can take on a compulsive quality that is driven by the desire to avoid the negative consequences of abstinence, including negative affect and heightened stress/anxiety. This transition from positive reinforcement- to negative reinforcement-driven consumption involves the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system, although

"Faith" as a Framework for Understanding Barriers and Enablers to Social and Behaviour Change Using Child Marriage in Mozambique, Nepal, and the Philippines as a Case Study.

This study examines the role of faith in social and behaviour change, using child marriage as a case study across Mozambique, Nepal, and the Philippines. While faith is widely acknowledged as a social force, its role in shaping behaviour remains underexplored in development programming. This research addresses that gap by proposing a multidimensional framework for understanding faith's influence on social norms and behaviour. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys (N = 986), focus group discussions, and key informant interviews conducted between 2020 and 2023. The study ident

Addiction and stress: Exploring the reward pathways in brain affected by different drugs.

This chapter delves into the complex interplay among addiction, stress, and the reward pathways in the brain, emphasizing the ways in which various drugs affect these systems and exacerbate SUD. Drugs have physiological effects that can be both pleasurable and unpleasant. These effects change behavior through both positive and negative reinforcement. A person's genetic predisposition to addiction is mostly determined by factors such as biological sex, age of first usage, and dopamine receptor density. Drug use behaviors are also greatly influenced by environmental stressors, media exposure, an

Behavioral treatment of chronic skin-picking in individuals with developmental disabilities: a systematic review.

Skin-picking is a type of self-injurious behavior involving the pulling, scratching, lancing, digging, or gouging of one's own body. It is associated with social impairment, and increased medical and mental health concerns. While there are several reports showing that skin-picking is common in individuals with developmental disabilities, knowledge about effective treatment approaches is sparse. We therefore reviewed studies involving the treatment of chronic skin-picking in individuals with developmental disabilities. Systematic searches of electronic databases, journals, and reference lists i

A dopaminergic reward prediction error signal shapes maternal behavior in mice.

How social contact is perceived as rewarding and subsequently modifies interactions is unclear. Dopamine (DA) from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) regulates sociality, but the ongoing, unstructured nature of free behavior makes it difficult to ascertain how. Here, we tracked the emergence of a repetitive stereotyped parental retrieval behavior and conclude that VTA DA neurons incrementally refine it by reinforcement learning (RL). Trial-by-trial performance was correlated with the history of DA neuron activity, but DA signals were inconsistent with VTA directly influencing the current trial.

Connected lives: Care, money management, and gender inequality in low-income households in times of crisis in Argentina.

Inspired by the sociology of Zelizer, this article lays out a framework of analysis that sheds light on money management as a cornerstone of the social organization of care. First, it lays out the features of the money management of care and caretaking practices to reveal a cyclical process in which the money side of care is rendered invisible and naturalized. It then turns to the question of debt, a key aspect of money management, and its reinforcement of gender inequalities during the care crisis associated with COVID-19. The findings are drawn from a qualitative survey of low-income househo
