Development of three methods for extracting respiration from the surface ECG: a review.

BACKGROUND: Respiration rate (RR) is a critical vital sign that can be monitored to detect acute changes in patient condition (e.g., apnea) and potentially provide an early warning of impending life-threatening deterioration. Monitoring respiration signals is also critical for detecting sleep disordered breathing such as sleep apnea. Additionally, analyzing a respiration signal can enhance the quality of medical images by gating image acquisition based on the same phase of the patient's respiratory cycle. Although many methods exist for measuring respiration, in this review we focus on three E

A critical review of dysfunctional breathing.

Dysfunctional breathing (DB) refers to various abnormalities breathing patterns. Whilst a formal definition exists, subsequent research has inconsistently applied or omitted it. As interest in breathing techniques grows among both healthcare professionals and the public, it is important to reach a consensus on DB's definition to ensure effective assessment and treatment. This critical review explores how DB is currently defined and applied within respiratory and musculoskeletal health. A lack of consistency in the literature identified the need for a more comprehensive framework of DB. To addr

HIV-1 Tat Impairment of Mitochondrial Respiration via Complexes I and II Can Be Ameliorated by Allopregnanolone in Opioid-Exposed or Opioid-Naïve Cells and Mice.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders are prevalent despite antiretroviral intervention. Some HIV virotoxins, such as the trans-activator of transcription (Tat), are not targeted by antiretrovirals, and their neurotoxic actions may be exacerbated by opioids. Both Tat and morphine disrupt mitochondrial function, which may promote neurotoxicity, but the mechanisms are poorly understood. Herein, we assess the capacity of HIV Tat and morphine to alter the fundamental ability of mitochondria to generate and transfer energy along the electron transport chain (ETC). We find that exposure to Tat inh

Genesis of multipeaked waves of the esophagus: repetitive contractions or motion artifact?

Multipeaked waves (MPW) in the distal esophagus occur frequently in patients with esophageal spastic motor disorders and diabetes mellitus and are thought to represent repetitive esophageal contractions. We aimed to investigate whether the relative motion between a stationary pressure sensor and contracted peristaltic esophageal segment that moves with respiration leads to the formation of MPW. We mathematically modeled the effect of relative movement between a moving pressure segment and a fixed pressure sensor on the pressure waveform morphology. We conducted retrospective analysis of 100 sw

Therapy for the mucopolysaccharidoses.

Better understanding of disease pathophysiology, improved supportive care and availability of disease-specific treatments for some of the mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) disorders have greatly improved the outlook for patients with MPS disorders. Optimal management of these multisystemic disorders involves a multidisciplinary team and regular, comprehensive follow-up. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) is now available for MPS I (Hurler, Hurler-Scheie and Scheie syndromes) (laronidase), MPS II (Hunter syndrome) (idursulfase) and MPS VI Maroteaux-Lamy (galsulfase), and is in development for MPS IV (M

[Sleep disorders in elderly, the sleep apnea syndrome in particular: are they a cause of insomnia? A review of literature].

In this publication a review is presented based on the findings resulting from sleep-wake investigations searching for sleep disorders assoc … r people disorders characterized by movements during sleep increase significantly with age, nightly respiration disorders do not. SAS, PLM and RBD appear most frequently in men and RLS in women. The disorders characterized by movements during sleep (especially RLS and RBD) are often accompanied by sleeplessness. SAS, however, is more closely associated with day-time sl …

Perturbation in mitochondrial network dynamics and in complex I dependent cellular respiration in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondria have been suggested to be involved in the pathology of bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia. However, the mechanism underlying mitochondrial dysfunction is unclear. Mitochondrial network dynamics, which reflects cellular metabolic state, is important for embryonic development, synapse formation, and neurodegeneration. This study aimed to investigate mitochondrial network dynamics and its plausible association with abnormal cellular oxygen consumption in schizophrenia. METHODS: Viable Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphocytes (lymphoblastoids) from DSM-IV dia

Does leptin link sleep loss and breathing disturbances with major public diseases?

Leptin is best known as a regulator of energy homeostasis, but it also interacts with sleep and breathing. Leptin secretion increases at night and decreases during the day. The circadian secretory profile of leptin is determined both by the hypothalamic circadian pacemaker and sleep-wake cycle. Leptin is also a powerful respiratory stimulant. Serum leptin levels are higher in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome but lower during extended sleep deprivation in healthy subjects or in narcolepsy. Abnormalities in serum leptin concentrations have recently been linked with deleterious effects on weight
