Subcortical projections of the pericruciate cortex of cat. An autoradiography study.

This communication deals with an autoratiographic analysis of two experiments in which multiple injections of 35S methionine were performed around the cruciate sulcus of cat. One case was studied in coronal sections and the other in sagittal sections. The thalamic projections include: (1) the anterior pole of nucleus reticularis; (2) the rostral pole of the ventral thalamus (VA and VL); (3) parts of the ventrobasal complex (VPLm and (VPM); (4) intralaminary centers, in particular CL; and (5) a region around the ventral end of the fasciculus retroflexus. Instead of a terminal projection, the la

Projection from the vestibular nuclei to the inferior olive in the cat: an autoradiographic and horseradish peroxidase study.

Injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the inferior olive of 13 cats resulted in the labeling of neurons in the medial (MVN) and descending vestibular nuclei (DVN) as well as in subgroups g, p.h., s.v., x and z. The contribution of groups p.h. and z. could not be definitively established. Injections of triated leucine in the vestibular nuclei and adjacent reticular formation in 4 cats indicated that the previously identified vestibular nuclei and subgroups project bilaterally to the dorsomedial cell column and ipsilaterally to subnucleus beta of the inferior olive. In view of the known …

The connections of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the brain of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) as revealed by anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The connections of the rostral and caudal parts of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the carp were studied with the horseradish peroxidase technique. Following ionophoretic peroxidase injections in these motor nuclei, retrogradely labeled cells were observed together with anterogradely labeled motor cell processes. Several cellular areas in thalamus, cerebellum and medulla oblongata were shown to project to the V and VII motor nuclei. Labeled cells were found in the inferior lobe and the glomerular complex of the thalamus. In the medulla oblongata, cells in the descending trigeminal nu

Morphine-induced rotation in naive, nonlesioned rats.

In rats injected with morphine in the midbrain reticular formation, pronounced ipsilateral rotation behavior was elicited by mild auditory and visual stimuli. The frequency of occurrence and rate of rotation were dose-dependent. This effect was site specific and drug specific; other drugs (except heroin) failed to induce this behavior. Naloxone potentiated the morphine rotation. Pretreatment with drugs that either potentiated or attenuated the morphine rotation indicated involvement of the noradrenergic and cholinergic systems and excluded a role for the dopaminergic system. No analgesia was o…

Effects of sodium pentobarbital upon cardiovascular responses to mesencephalic reticular stimulation in rats.

In nineteen rats the cardiovascular responses to the electrical stimulation of the lateral mesencephalic reticular formation (MRF) were recorded before, during and after different doses of sodium pentobarbital injected intravenously. Before pentobarbital, stimulation of the MRF induced cardiovascular changes in 100% of cases. The following four patterns were observed: a) hypertension plus bradycardia (N = 11; 57.9%); b) hypertension without chronotropic effects (N = 4; 21%); c) hypertension plus tachycardia (N = 3; 15.8%), and d) hypotension without chronotropic effects (N = 1;5.3%). Afferent projections related to attack sites in the pontine tegmentum.

Attack by a cat on a rat was elicited by electrical stimulation of the ventral parabrachial nucleus or the paralemniscal pontine reticular formation. The attack was quiet and it differed from similar behavior elicited at other sites in that the cat not only bit the rat but struck it with its paw. Horseradish peroxidase was deposited at the attack sites. Cells sending projections to the attack sites were located in gyrus proreus, anterior, central, and medial amygdala, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, lateral, dorsal and perifornical hypothalamus, as well as the central gray matter, sup…

[The study on the morphology character of blood-spleen barrier].

OBJECTIVE: To study the morphology and functional character of blood-spleen barrier (BSB) and establish the concept of BSB. METHODS: Thirty healthy Wistar rats were studied. Ten rats were injected with 1.5 ml mixed fluid of India ink and physiological saline through the tail vein. Histological changes of the spleen in all animals were observed with light and electron microscopy, including HE, Foot, Masson staining and immunohistochemistry of CD68 and CD34. RESULTS: Most of the carbon particles were within the splenic sinuses in marginal zone but not in the white pulp after 6 h. There was a c

A Spinal Origin for the Obligate Flexor Synergy in the Nonhuman Primate: Implications for Control of Reaching.

Stroke survivors frequently develop the flexor synergy, an obligate cocontraction of shoulder abductors and elbow flexors. The neural substrate has to date proven elusive. Here we trained two healthy female monkeys to generate isometric elbow and shoulder torques to move an on-screen cursor and recorded neuron firing from motor cortical areas and the reticular formation. All regions contained some cells coding for independent contractions about elbow or shoulder. For neurons coding cocontractions, there was a surprising bias: More cells were related to combinations orthogonal to the flexor syn…

The ENKRVM →SRD Projection Constitutes a Functionally Specific Circuit for Bidirectional Pain Modulation.

AIMS: Chronic pain management remains a major clinical challenge due to the limited availability of effective therapies that avoid severe side effects. The rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) is a critical brainstem center for pain modulation; however, the neurochemical identity and functional roles of its neuronal subpopulations remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We performed a series of tests by constructing a complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced inflammatory nociceptive model and a chronic constrictive injury (CCI) neuropathic pain model combined with behavioral experiments, in si

Long-term recovery from a minimally responsive state with recovery of an injured ascending reticular activating system: A case report.

We report on a patient with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI-BI) who showed recovery from a minimally consciousness state over 6 years concurrent with recovery of an injured ascending reticular activating system (ARAS), which was demonstrated on diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).A 31-year-old female patient, who suffered from HI-BI, showed impaired consciousness with a minimally conscious state: intermittently obeying simple motor tasks, such as "please grasp my hand." Her consciousness showed recovery with the passage of time; rapid recovery was observed during the recent 2 years. In the up

Lack of robust LGN label following transneuronal rabies virus injections into macaque area V4.

In primates, retinal inputs are relayed through the magno- and parvocells of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) indirectly to extrastriate visual cortex. The most direct pathway identified to the extrastriate cortex is a disynaptic one that provides robust magno- and parvocellular inputs to the middle temporal area (MT). The inclusion of parvocells in this projection is somewhat surprising because of their importance for color and form vision, whereas MT is more strictly tuned to velocity. This raises the question of whether areas more involved in color and form processing, such as V4, recei

[The role of serotonin in behavior modulation].

The central projection systems represent an expansive and important component of the brainstem reticular core which provide modulatory input into multiple target networks throughout the entire vertebrate neuraxis. Most of the afferent input into the cranial raphe originates within sensory uni- and polymodal, associative and limbic cortices suggesting that serotonin modulates preprocessed information. The serotonergic neurons discharge in a remarkably stable and tonic fashion during wakefulness. Some 5-HT neurons increase their discharge rate phasically in association with the activation of cen

[The effect of vibration on the electrocorticographic shifts during the switching off of specific and nonspecific afferent systems of the brain].

Electrocorticograms of vibration induced effects were studied in intact and labyrinthectomized rabbits under midbrain reticular formation and renoreactive structures blockade. There was involvement of the specific (vestibular) and non-specific brain structures in the mechanisms underlying the cortex' electric activity. The article contains a review of the vibration-related shifts in the cortex, both specific and nonspecific--and in other afferent modalities (proprioceptive, somatic, visceral).

[Neurological aspects of infantile autism].

Childhood autism is not usually considered as a neurological disease although frequent antecedents of ante, peri and postnatal injuries are found in its antecedents. Several symptoms of autism particularly in the early development, resemble the signs observed in frontal, temporal, striatal and brainstem dysfunctioning. These cerebral structures are connected with the central dopaminergic system which may be disturbed in autistic children. Such hypotheses suggest the necessary elaboration of an infant and child "behavioral neurology".
