Redescriptions of the nematodes Litomosoides patersoni (Mazza, 1928) (Onchocercidae) and Stilestrongylus stilesi Freitas, Lent, and Almeida, 1937 (Heligmonellidae) parasites of Holochilus chacarius (Rodentia, Cricetidae) from Salta, Argentina.

Two nematode species are redescribed from the type host species Holochilus chacarius Thomas (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) and from the type locality of 1 of them, i.e., Ingenio San Martín de Tabacal, Salta Province, Argentina. Rodents were deposited at the Colección Mamíferos Lillo, Tucumán, Argentina. Litomosoides patersoni (Mazza, 1928) (Onchocercidae) possesses a buccal capsule with irregular external walls, a buccal cavity smooth, becoming thinner near the oral opening, a complete set of head papillae, 3-6 pairs of cloacal papillae, and the " sigmodontis " type of spicules. Filario…

Experimental evidence and ecological perspectives for the adaptation of Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907 (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) to a wild host, the water-rat, Nectomys squamipes Brants, 1827 (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae).

Due to the semi aquatic habits and the overlap of the geographical distribution of the water-rat, Nectomys spp., with schistosomiasis endemic areas, these wild rodents are very likely to acquire Schistosoma mansoni infection in their daily activities. The role of the water-rat in the S. mansoni cycle would be substantiated if one could prove that these rodents acquire the parasite during their own activity time, a completely independent time schedule of human activities. To pursue this goal, we performed two field experiments in the municipality of Sumidouro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a

Hymenolepis folkertsi n. sp. (Eucestoda: Hymenolepididae) in the oldfield mouse Peromyscus polionotus (Wagner) (Rodentia: Cricetidae: Neotominae) from the southeastern Nearctic with comments on tapeworm faunal diversity among deer mice.

A previously unrecognized species of hymenolepidid cestode attributable to Hymenolepis is described based on specimens in Peromyscus polionotus, oldfield mouse, from Georgia near the southeastern coast of continental North America. Specimens of Hymenolepis folkertsi n. sp. differ from those attributed to most other species in the genus by having testes arranged in a triangle and a scolex with a prominent rostrum-like protrusion. The newly recognized species is further distinguished by the relative position and length of the cirrus sac, shape of seminal receptacle, and relative size of external

Adult and Immature Stages of the New Species of the Genus Demodex (Acariformes: Demodecidae) with Data on Parasitism, Topography, and Topical Specificity of Demodecid Mites in the Yellow-Necked Mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (Rodentia: Muridae).

Demodex mollis n. sp. is described from the yellow-necked mouse, Apodemus flavicollis (Melchior, 1834), from Poland. It is a medium-sized demodecid mite (adult stages are, on average, 249 μm long) observed in the skin of the eyelid area. This new species is most similar to two other species occupying similar a microhabitat in hosts of the same genus-Demodex lacrimalis Lukoschus and Jongman, 1974 from Apodemus sylvaticus Linnaeus, 1758 and Demodex huttereri Mertens, Lukoschus and Nutting, 1983 from Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771)-but it differs in the following features: the terminal palpi are

Calomyscid Rodents (Rodentia: Calomyscidae) as a Potential Reservoir of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in a Mountainous Residential Area in the Plateau of Iran: Inferring from Molecular Data of kDNA and ITS2 Genes of Leishmania Major.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a neglected tropical disease, is an important health problem in Fars Province, southern Iran. Fars, the fourth most populous Province in Iran, is the center of both anthroponotic and zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL). Rodents, the reservoir of Leishmania major, play an important role in transmitting ZCL. In the present study, we report Leishmania infection in calomyscid rodents for the first time in mountainous residential areas of Shiraz, the capital of Fars Province, in southern Iran. Rodents were trapped in urban mountainous areas. The skin, liver, and spl

[Leishmania major Yakimoff et Schokhor, 1914 (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) in Meriones shawi Duvernoy, 1842 (Rodentia: Gerbillidae): persistence of the infection in meriones and its infectivity for the sand fly vector (Phlebotomus) papatasi Scopoli, 1786 (Diptera: Psychodidae)].

The ability of the sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi to transmit Leishmania major, the etiologic agent of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, to Meriones shawi, the natural reservoir host of this parasite, was studied under laboratory conditions. Sand flies became infected with L. major after feeding on a lesion of needle-inoculated M. shawi. Moreover, P. papatasi, previously infected with L. major, transmitted the parasite to M. shawi by bite during a second bloodmeal. Two months after the blood-meal, the animal developed a lesion on its ears. Xenodiagnosis was performed on the infected animal. The

Evolutionary analysis of the anti-viral STAT2 gene of primates and rodents: Signature of different stages of an arms race.

STAT2 plays a strategic role in defending viral infection through the signaling cascade involving the immune system initiated after type I interferon release. Many flaviviruses target the inactivation or degradation of STAT2 as a strategy to impair this host's line of defense. Primates are natural reservoirs for a range of disease-causing flaviviruses (e.g., Zika, Dengue, and Yellow Fever virus), while rodents appear less susceptible. We analyzed the STAT2 coding sequence of 28 Rodentia species and 49 Primates species. Original data from 19 Platyrrhini species were sequenced for the SH2 domain…

Toxoplasmosis in a free-ranging hairy dwarf porcupine (Sphiggurus spinosus) with a potential novel genotype.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the ubiquitous coccidia Toxoplasma gondii. Rodents play an important role in maintaining its life cycle, as they are one of the main diet sources for felids (wild and domestic), the unique definitive hosts. However, reports of toxoplasmosis in porcupines (Order Rodentia) are uncommon, with gaps concerning its pathophysiology. South America is the continent with the greatest genetic diversity of rodents and T. gondii. A free-ranging hairy dwarf porcupine was admitted to a wildlife rescue centre with a history of trauma. During rehabilitation, the an…
