Lipoprotein (a): Does It Play a Role in Pediatric Ischemic Stroke and Thrombosis?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this paper is to describe the current understanding of lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)), clinical practice guidelines, and the potential pathophysiological mechanisms that appear to increase the risk of cardiovascular and thromboembolic events, specifically within the pediatric population. RECENT FINDINGS: The proatherogenic and pro-thrombotic properties of Lp(a) may increase the risk of atherothrombotic disease. In adults, atherosclerotic plaques increase thrombotic risk, but antifibrinolytic and proinflammatory properties appear to have an important role in children. A

Does KUB play a role in the diagnosis of bladder bowel dysfunction?

INTRODUCTION: Kidney ureter bladder radiography (KUB) is widely used for the evaluation of constipation in children with bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD); however, there is varying evidence to support its routine diagnostic use. One drawback to KUB is radiation exposure. The dangers of radiation in children are well-documented, and per As Low As Reasonably Achievable, non-beneficial radiation should be avoided. This risk is especially high in children who undergo repeated imaging in the follow up of constipation treatment. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the utility of KUB in diagnosing chi

Does Vitamin Supplementation Play a Role in Chronic Kidney Disease?

Although the role of vitamins in the human body is proven, guidelines for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) remain unclear. This narrative review summarizes the findings of 98 studies of CKD and the effects of vitamin D, B, C, A, E, and K supplementation on patients on dialysis for CKD, with the aim of summarizing the existing guidelines. The findings are promising, showing the potential effectiveness of vitamin supplementation with, for example, vitamins B, D, or C. However, recommendations are still ambiguous, especially in the case of vitamins A and K, due to the potential toxicity

Complement, but Not Platelets, Plays a Pivotal Role in the Outcome of Mucormycosis In Vivo.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycetes, a heterogeneous group of fungi, induce a life-threatening disease called mucormycosis. Immune deficiencies represent a major risk factor; hence, we wanted to illuminate the role of complement and platelets in the defense against mucormycetes. METHODS: Rhizopus arrhizus (Ra), Rhizopus microsporus (Rm), Lichtheimia ramosa (Lr), Lichtheimia corymbifera (Lc), Rhizomucor pusillus (Rmp), and Mucor circinelloides (Mc) spores were opsonized with human and mouse serum, and C1q, C3c, and terminal complement complex (C5b-9) deposition was measured. Additionally, thrombocytopeni

Pedabarography May Play a Role in Foot Plantar Scanning in Acromegaly.

AIMS: Acromegaly is associated with symptoms in many organs, including the heart, colon, skin, bones, and many joints. Patients with long-term treatment or biochemical control still suffer from acromegaly arthropathy (AA). Primarily, the weight-bearing joints of the lower extremity are affected and at last deformation emerges. The aim of this study is to detect the changes in the feet with pedabarography in patients with acromegaly. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients with acromegaly (4 males and 15 females) and 13 healthy controls (1 male and 12 females) were included in the study (p=0.

Does protracted radon exposure play a role in the development of dementia?

Radon is a ubiquitous radioactive gas that decays into a series of solid radioactive decay products. Radon, and its decay products, enter the human body primarily through inhalation and can be delivered to various tissues including the brain through systemic circulation. It can also reach the brain by neuronal pathways via the olfactory system. While ionizing radiation has been suggested as a risk factor of dementia for decades, studies exploring the possible role of radon exposure in the development of Alzheimer's Diseases (AD) and other dementias are sparse. We systematically reviewed the li

Can the cGAS-STING Pathway Play a Role in the Dry Eye?

Dry eye is one of the most common ocular surface diseases in the world and seriously affects the quality of life of patients. As an immune-related disease, the mechanism of dry eye has still not been fully elucidated. The cGAS-STING pathway is a recently discovered pathway that plays an important role in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases by recognizing dsDNA. As an important signal to initiate inflammation, the release of dsDNA is associated with dry eye. Herein, we focused on the pathophysiology of the immune-inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of dry eye, attempted to gain insight i

Does senescence play a role in age-related macular degeneration?

Advanced age is the most established risk factor for developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of visual impairment in the elderly, in Western and developed countries. Similarly, after middle age, there is an exponential increase in pathologic molecular and cellular events that can induce senescence, traditionally defined as an irreversible loss of the cells' ability to divide and most recently reported to also occur in select post-mitotic and terminally differentiated cells, such as neurons. Together these facts raise the question as to whether or not cellul

Inflammatory monocytes and microglia play independent roles in inflammatory ictogenesis.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic contribution of neuroinflammation to ictogenesis and epilepsy may provide a therapeutic target for reduction of seizure burden in patients that are currently underserved by traditional anti-seizure medications. The Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) model has provided important insights into the role of inflammation in ictogenesis, but questions remain regarding the relative contribution of microglia and inflammatory monocytes in this model. METHODS: Female C57BL/6 mice were inoculated by intracranial injection of 2 × 105, 5 × 104, 1.25 × 104, or 3.125

Neuroinflammation Plays a Critical Role in Cerebral Cavernous Malformation Disease.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are neurovascular lesions caused by loss of function mutations in 1 of 3 genes, including KRIT1 (CCM1), CCM2, and PDCD10 (CCM3). CCMs affect ≈1 out of 200 children and adults, and no pharmacologic therapy is available. CCM lesion count, size, and aggressiveness vary widely among patients of similar ages with the same mutation or even within members of the same family. However, what determines the transition from quiescent lesions into mature and active (aggressive) CCM lesions is unknown. METHODS: We use genetic, RNA-sequencing, histology, f

ANKFN1 plays both protumorigenic and metastatic roles in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Ankyrin repeat and fibronectin type III domain containing 1 (ANKFN1) is reported to be involved in human height and developmental abnormalities, but the expression profile and molecular function of ANKFN1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance and biological function of ANKFN1 in HCC and investigate whether ANKFN1 can be used for differential diagnosis in HCC. Here, we showed that ANKFN1 was upregulated in 126 tumor tissues compared with adjacent nontumorous tissues in HCC patients. The upregulation of ANKFN1 in HCC was associat

The Role Played by Transcription Factor E3 in Modulating Cardiac Hypertrophy.

Transcription factor E3 (TFE3), which is a key regulator of cellular adaptation, is expressed in most tissues, including the heart, and is reportedly overexpressed during cardiac hypertrophy. In this study, TFE3's role in cardiac hypertrophy was investigated. To understand TFE3's physiological importance in cardiac hypertrophy, pressure-overload cardiac hypertrophy was induced through transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in both wild-type (WT) and TFE3 knockout mice (TFE3-/-). Eleven weeks after TAC induction, cardiac hypertrophy was observed in both WT and TFE3-/- mice. However, significant r

Autophagy plays a double-edged sword role in liver diseases.

As a highly evolutionarily conserved process, autophagy can be found in all types of eukaryotic cells. Such a constitutive process maintains cellular homeostasis in a wide variety of cell types through the encapsulation of damaged proteins or organelles into double-membrane vesicles. Autophagy not only simply eliminates materials but also serves as a dynamic recycling system that produces new building blocks and energy for cellular renovation and homeostasis. Previous studies have primarily recognized the role of autophagy in the degradation of dysfunctional proteins and unwanted organelles. H

Can Maternal Autoantibodies Play an Etiological Role in ASD Development?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous condition with multiple etiologies and risk factors - both genetic and environmental. Recent data demonstrate that the immune system plays an important role in prenatal brain development. Deregulation of the immune system during embryonic development can lead to neurodevelopmental changes resulting in ASD. One of the potential etiologic factors in the development of ASD has been identified as the presence of maternal autoantibodies targeting fetal brain proteins. The type of ASD associated with the presence of maternal autoantibodies has been r

Risk Perception Plays Minimal Role in Sun Exposure Behaviours.

Despite decades of public health campaigns, tanning and sunburn still occur at unacceptably high rates. Skin cancer prevention campaigns predominately focus on increasing awareness of the risk of excessive sun exposure. This study sought to assess the efficacy of this approach, by interrogating correlations between risk perception and sun exposure behaviour. A 31-item questionnaire assessing skin cancer risk factors, tanning attitudes, sunburn and tanning behaviour was undertaken by individuals who attended a workplace skin check. Validated questions were included to assess cognitive and affec

Periostin plays a critical role in the cell cycle in lung fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a devastating disease with a median survival of only three to 5 years. Fibroblast proliferation is a hallmark of IPF as is secretion of extracellular matrix proteins from fibroblasts. However, it is still uncertain how IPF fibroblasts acquire the ability to progressively proliferate. Periostin is a matricellular protein highly expressed in the lung tissues of IPF patients, playing a critical role in the pathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. However, it remains undetermined whether periostin affects lung fibroblast proliferation. METHODS: In thi

Polymerase IV Plays a Crucial Role in Pollen Development in Capsella.

In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), DNA-dependent RNA polymerase IV (Pol IV) is required for the formation of transposable element (TE)-derived small RNA transcripts. These transcripts are processed by DICER-LIKE3 into 24-nucleotide small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) that guide RNA-directed DNA methylation. In the pollen grain, Pol IV is also required for the accumulation of 21/22-nucleotide epigenetically activated siRNAs, which likely silence TEs via post-transcriptional mechanisms. Despite this proposed role of Pol IV, its loss of function in Arabidopsis does not cause a discernible pollen
