Impact of fixed appliance treatment on root resorption in root canal-treated teeth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between orthodontic treatment and root resorption in endodontically treated teeth remains controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of fixed appliance treatment on root resorption in root canal-treated teeth compared to vital teeth. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Sinomed, CNKI, and Wanfang. Studies comparing root resorption between root canal-treated teeth and vital teeth during orthodontic treatment were includ

Root resorption of endodontically treated teeth following orthodontic treatment: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this meta-analysis was to investigate the effect of orthodontic treatment on root resorption of endodontically treated teeth compared to vital teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted in 18 electronic databases. Review articles and relevant articles were searched for cross-references. Two independent reviewers screened all articles according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria and extracted the corresponding data. The pooled estimate of mean difference of root resorption weighted by the fixed-effect model and the corresponding 95 % confi

Breakthrough in the Development of Endodontic Irrigants.

The three main components of endodontic success are three-dimensional obturation, pulp space sterilization, and biomechanical preparation. Instrumentation techniques are insufficient to accomplish complete disinfection of the pulp space. It is essential to use additional tools, such as endodontic irrigants. This review article aims to provide a general overview of the different root canal irrigants and their clinical uses. Endodontic treatment focuses more on removing infectious material from the root canal system to facilitate the healing of an existing periapical lesion or to prevent the per

Histologic and histobacteriologic observations of failed revascularization/revitalization therapy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical debridement plays an important role in eliminating intracanal bacteria, such as biofilm on the canal walls and bacteria in the dentinal tubules. Mechanical debridement is not recommended for root canal disinfection in revascularization/revitalization therapy. Here we report a failed revascularization/revitalization case, which could be due to inadequate root canal disinfection without mechanical removal of biofilm and bacteria in dentinal tubules. METHODS: A 6-year-old boy had a traumatic injury to tooth #9, which was avulsed and replanted within 40 minutes. The tooth

Orthodontic management of root-filled teeth.

Orthodontists are often concerned about the prognosis of root-filled teeth, particularly when extractions are required for orthodontic treatment. This review provides guidance on assessing the quality of root fillings, as well as the factors which affect the prognosis of root-filled teeth. The implications of previous traumatic injuries and the likelihood of root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement are discussed.

Endodontic treatment of maxillary first molars presenting with unusual asymmetric palatal root morphology using spiral computerized tomography: a case report.

Variations in root number and canal morphology are challenges for successful endodontic therapy. This report describes 2 endodontically managed maxillary first molars with asymmetric presentation of unusual palatal root morphology. These included the left maxillary first molar with a single palatal root and 2 palatal canals and the right maxillary first molar with 2 separate palatal roots with 1 canal in each root. An accurate diagnosis was confirmed with the help of spiral computerized tomography. This case report discusses this asymmetric variation in the palatal root morphology and highligh

Systemic, prophylactic and local applications of antimicrobials in endodontics: an update review.

Antibiotics were first discovered in the late 1920s but were not routinely used clinically until the early 1940s during the Second World War. They can be used as an adjunct to endodontic treatment in a number of ways-systemically, prophylactically and locally. There are few real indications for the systemic use of antibiotics in conjunction with endodontic treatment. They are only needed when the body's efforts at fighting bacteria are failing. Use of antibiotics to prevent infection (antibiotic prophylaxis) may prevent some case of bacterial endocarditis. Therefore, prophylaxis is recommended

Utilizing the GentleWave® System for Debridement of Undetected Apical Anatomy.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Debriding and disinfecting complex anatomies within the root canal system pose a major challenge during root canal therapy. Even with current chemomechanical techniques, debris and bacterial remnants are commonly left behind, which are generally believed to increase the risk of endodontic failure. This case details the use of a new technique to debride complex apical anatomy in a maxillary molar. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old female presented to the clinic with a chief complaint of increasing pain in her tooth. Clinical examination of the right first maxillary molar (#3) reve…

Radiographic outcome of endodontic treatment and retreatment of teeth with apical periodontitis using two different root canal irrigants. A prospective cohort study.

AIM: The aim of this prospective cohort study was to compare the radiographic outcome of endodontic treatment and retreatment of teeth with apical periodontitis using either 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or 2% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) for root canal irrigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the years from 2013 to 2015 standard irrigation varied by semester between NaOCl and CHX at the Department of Endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry. During that time, 912 teeth received treatment for apical periodontitis in 744 patients, of whom 532 responded to the request for a 1-year follow-up. On

[Computational fluid dynamics analysis of the flow of four irrigations in root canal].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the flow of four irrigations in a root canal with different needle-insertion depth by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model in order to provide a reference to the needle placement in clinical practice. METHODS: The density and viscosity of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (A), 3% sodium hypochlorite (B), 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA, C), 2% chlorhexidine (D) were measured. A CFD model by ICEM software was used to simulate irrigant flow from an open-ended flat needle positioned at the depth of 1, 3, 5 mm to the physiological apical within the root canal.

Success of Coronal Pulpotomy in Permanent Teeth with Irreversible Pulpitis: An Evidence-based Review.

Vital pulp therapies have been used in primary teeth and immature permanent teeth. However, with the advent of new bioactive material, the paradigm is shifting toward permanent teeth with mature apices of roots. There are many prospective and retrospective studies, randomized controlled trials, and systematic reviews that report coronal pulpotomy with bioactive material in permanent teeth with pulpal pathosis proved to be as successful as root canal therapy (RCT). Coronal pulpotomy is cost-effective, not very technical demanding like root canal therapy and less time consuming for both the dent…

Photodynamic inactivation of Enterococcus faecalis in dental root canals in vitro.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We previously reported the use of a flexible fiber optic that uniformly distributed light in the root canal space for targeting bacteria after their sensitization with methylene blue (MB). In the present study, we investigated the photodynamic effects of MB on Enterococcus faecalis species in experimentally infected root canals of extracted teeth after their sensitization with a concentration of MB that exhibits reduced dark toxicity. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a model of root canal infection, 64 root canal specimens were prepared from extracted, single-
