UNLABELLED: Rosacea is a facial inflammatory disorder that shows an increasing incidence with age. While rosacea is common > 60 years of age, pediatric rosacea is uncommon. Diagnostic criteria are based on clinical symptoms. Laboratory investigations and histopathology are only needed to exclude other differential diagnoses. There are several subtypes such as erythemato-telangiectatic, papulo-pustular, periorificial, and granulomatous variants. In contrast to adult rosacea, phymatous subtypes do not belong to pediatric rosacea. A special subtype seen in infants and children is an idiopathic fa…

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis typically affecting the facial skin but also the eyes. With its chronic course with fluctuating episodes of flashing, redness, papulopustules, and nodules it poses a severe psychologic burden to the affected individuals. In addition to the facial changes, more than half of the patients have ocular involvement ranging from blepharitis and conjunctival hyperemia to more severe ophthalmic damage, and even blindness. Clinically, the ocular involvement in rosacea includes meibomian gland dysfunction with relapsing hordeola and chalazia, diffuse hyperemic…

PURPOSE: The objective of the study is to compare the frequency of Demodex on the eyelash follicle of patients with rosacea and referents without rosacea or ophthalmological disorders.
METHODS: This is a comparative, open, observational, and cross-sectional study that included 41 patients diagnosed with rosacea and 41 referents without rosacea diagnosis or ophthalmic alterations. The individuals underwent a slit-lamp examination in which two eyelashes per eyelid were removed with fine forceps. The presence of Demodex was sought by direct visualization under a light microscope. The results wer…

Acne and rosacea are common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. During pregnancy these skin disorders may become aggravated, in rare cases occurring for the first time. There are no data available for rosacea and little data for acne concerning the course of these skin disorders during pregnancy. Up to 42% of the pregnant women suffer from acne. In 90% of these women the disease existed before pregnancy. In 1/3, however, acne relapsed during pregnancy after a prior disease-free period. In 60% acne deteriorated during pregnancy. Randomized controlled trials for the treatment of acne or rosacea …

Isotretinoin is a revolutionary medicine for the treatment of acne vulgaris, with new studies showing evidence of excellent clinical outcomes in treating rosacea. After 30 years of clinical experience, new insights are being gained into dosing strategies, recurrence prevention, and dose-related side effects. Previous controversial associations with inflammatory bowel diseases and mood disorders have hampered the use of this medication in some clinical situations, with new evidence disproving these claims. The teratogenicity of this medication mandates iPLEDGE compliance with government regulat…

Ivermectin 1% cream (Soolantra(®); Rosiver™; Izefla(®)) is a novel topical agent indicated for the once-daily treatment of inflammatory lesions of rosacea. Ivermectin is a derivative of the avermectin family of macrocyclic lactone parasiticides. It displays anti-inflammatory properties as well as broad-spectrum anti-parasitic activity, both of which may contribute to its efficacy in treating rosacea. In phase III trials of 12 or 16 weeks' duration in adults with moderate to severe papulopustular rosacea, once-daily ivermectin 1% cream improved the symptoms of rosacea (as per Investigator Globa…

Refining diagnostic criteria has identified key characteristics differentiating rosacea, a chronic skin disorder, from other common cutaneous inflammatory conditions. The current classification system developed by the National Rosacea Society Expert Committee consists of erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular subtypes. Each subtype stands as a unique entity among a spectrum, with characteristic symptoms and physical findings, along with an intricate pathophysiology. The main treatment modalities for rosacea include topical, systemic, laser, and light therapies. Topical…

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease with a predominance of facial manifestations. The prevalence is increasing with age, peaking in the group aged older than 65 years. In 1997, one in eight Americans was aged 65 years and older. By 2030, more than 70 million individuals will be in this age group. This contribution reviews the current understanding of pathogenesis, aggravating factors, classification, comorbidities, and treatment options. Rosacea is a manageable disease that negatively affects quality of life. Rosacea increases the risk of depression and shows a significant proportion of …

BACKGROUND: There are controversial reports about the role of Demodex mites in pathogenesis of acne rosacea. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the presence and number of Demodex mites and the pathogenesis of rosacea.
METHODS: In this case-control study, the prevalence of Demodex mites was studied in facial biopsy of 75 patients with acne rosacea as case group, and in 75 patients with discoid lupus erythematosus and 75 patients with actinic lichen planus as control groups.
RESULTS: The prevalence of Demodex mites in patients with acne rosacea (38.6%) was significan…

The pathophysiology of rosacea remains unknown. A leading theory suggests a vascular basis; however, clinical observations and histopathologic studies suggest that inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicle may be central to the pathogenesis of rosacea. Demodex folliculorum is a frequently seen commensal in the follicles of facial skin. According to evidence from biopsies of the skin surface, individuals with rosacea have a higher density of this parasite. This increased mite density may play a role in the pathophysiology of rosacea by triggering inflammatory or specific immune reactions, mech…

PURPOSE: To present a patient with rosacea lymphoedema of one upper eyelid resulting in unilateral complete ptosis.
METHODS: A 51-year-old white man presented with a 12-month history of progressive painless swelling of the left upper eyelid. An incisional biopsy of the upper eyelid was performed.
RESULTS: The biopsy showed dermal oedema with lymphangiectasia and telangiectasia, accompanied by a mild to moderate mixed chronic inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes, histiocytes, plasma cells and rare eosinophils. Stains for fungi and mycobacteria were negative. The lack of lichenoid reaction, …

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder, affecting the face and chest, and develops mostly in the 3rd to 6th decades of life. It is characterized by erythema, telangiectasias, and recurrent flushings. During the time of this chronic inflammation, skin typically develops papules, pustules, and swelling. Ocular involvement occurs in 3 to 58% of patients with skin changes. Common ocular signs include blepharoconjunctivitis, meibomitis, and dry eyes. Rosacea keratitis, when present, however, has a poor prognosis and may lead to blindness. Among skin diseases, Helicobacter pylori infection has been ofte…

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common skin disorder affecting middle-aged and older adults. Many patients mistakenly assume that early rosacea is normally aging skin and are not aware that effective treatments exist to prevent progression to permanent disfiguring skin changes.
METHODS: The medical literature was reviewed on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of rosacea. MEDLINE was searched using the key search terms "rosacea," "rhinophyma," "metronidazole," "Helicobacter pylori," and "facial redness."
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Rosacea is easily diagnosed by physician observation, and ph…
