Hydnophytum formicarum Jack. (Rubiaceae) is a medicinal plant whose tubers possesses cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory and antiparasitic effects and have been used for the treatment of hepatitis, rheumatism and diarrhea. Herein we report the isolation of its active constituents and the testing of their antimicrobial activity against 27 strains of microorganisms using an agar dilution method and of their antioxidative activity using the DPPH and SOD assays. The results show that the crude hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate and methanol extracts exert such activities. Particularly, the crude …

Momordica charantia Linn. (Cucurbitaceae), the wild variety of bitter melon, and Morinda lucida Benth (Rubiaceae) were commonly used as a popular folk medicine in Benin. This study aimed to appreciate the ethnopharmacological knowledge and evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of M. charantia and M. lucida leaves extracts. Semi-structured surveys supported by individual interviews were conducted with herbalists and traditional healers in southern Benin. The antioxidant activities were evaluated by a micro-dilution technique using ABTS and FRAP methods. These activities were su…

Cancer is one of the most common causes of death in the developed world, with one-third of people diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. Oral cancer commonly occurs involving the buccal mucosa (cheeks), tongue, floor of the mouth and lip. It is one of the most devastating and disfiguring of malignancies. Morinda citrifolia L., commonly known as ‘noni’, belongs to the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the Pacific islands, Hawaii, Caribbean, Asia and Australia. The plant displays broad curative effects in pharmacological studies. Damnacanthal (DAM) and Nordamnacanthal (NDAM), anthraquinone…

Sabicea species are used in the Amazon for treatment of fever and malaria, which suggests that its chemical constituents may have some effect on pain and inflammation. Phytochemical analysis of the hexane fraction obtained from the crude ethanol extract from Sabicea grisea var. grisea Cham. & Schltdl (Rubiaceae), an endemic plant in Brazil, resulted in the isolation of octacosanol. This study investigated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the octacosanol in different experimental models. Breonadia salicina (Vahl) Hepper and J.R.I. Wood is widely used in South Africa and some other African countries for treatment of various infectious diseases such as diarrhea, fevers, cancer, diabetes and malaria. However, little is known about the active constituents associated with the biological activities. This study is aimed at exploring the metabolomics profile and antioxidant constituents of B. salicina. The chemical profiles of the leaf, stem bark and root of B. salicina were comprehensively characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy and ultra-performan

The aims of this work were to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo schistosomicidal properties of the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Mitracarpus frigidus (MFM) and to determine its HPLC profile. For the in vitro experiment, four pairs of adult worms, obtained from infected mice, were exposed to different concentrations of MFM (100 to 400 μg/mL) for 24 and 48 h and analyzed under an inverted microscope. For the in vivo experiment, mice were inoculated with cercariae and, 20 days after infection, MFM (100 and 300 mg/kg) was administered orally for the following 25 days. Mice were euthani

Carapichea ipecacuanha produces various emetine-type alkaloids, known as ipecac alkaloids, which have long been used as expectorants, emetics, and amebicides. In this study, we isolated an O-methyltransferase cDNA from this medicinal plant. The encoded protein (CiOMT1) showed 98% sequence identity to IpeOMT2, which catalyzes the 7'-O-methylation of 7'-O-demethylcephaeline to form cephaeline at the penultimate step of emetine biosynthesis (Nomura and Kutchan, J. Biol. Chem., 285, 7722-7738 (2010)). Recombinant CiOMT1 showed both 7'-O-methylation and 6'-O-methylation activities at the last two s

Liver fibrosis is an excessive wound-healing response triggered by chronic liver injury. It may eventually progress to cirrhosis, liver failure or liver cancer. Currently, there are no effective therapeutic strategies available. Deacetylasperulosidic acid methyl ester (DAM), a natural iridoid compound derived from Rubiaceae plants, possesses potential anti-inflammatory activity. However, its role in liver fibrosis and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Given the critical involvement of inflammation and gut microbiota dysbiosis in the development of liver fibrosis, this study aimed to in…

Angiogenesis driven by aerobic glycolysis in endothelial cells sustains rheumatoid arthritis (RA) progression. Geniposide (GE), an iridoid ether extracted from the Rubiaceae plant Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis, has shown anti-angiogenic potential in experimental arthritis. However, its role in metabolic regulation of angiogenesis remains unclear. The purpose was to explore the roles of GE on metabolism in angiogenesis and potential mechanisms. Adjuvant arthritis (AA) rat models and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were established. Network pharmacology predicted potential target…

Paederia foetida L. (Rubiaceae) is a climber which is widely distributed in Asian countries including Malaysia. The plant is traditionally used to treat various diseases including diabetes. This study is to evaluate the enzymatic inhibition activity of Paederia foetida twigs extracts and to identify the metabolites responsible for the bioactivity by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) metabolomics profiling. Three different twig extracts, namely, hexane (PFH), chloroform (PFC), and methanol (PFM), were submerged for their α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition potential in 5 replicate…

Following a bio-assay guided fractionation and chromatographic separations a known compound arborside C pentaacetate was isolated. Immunomodulatory effects of arborside C pentaacetate were revealed by inhibition of NO, pro-inflammatory mediators, IL-6, TNF-α, and NF-κB at translational level in an in vitro study. The docking results revealed that arborside C pentaacetate bind strongly to the target protein with the docking score of -10.38 kcal/mol. The compound was non-toxic on normal human fibroblast (BJ) and THP-1 cells and, could be a potential therapeutic agent in inflammation driven disea
