The Role of Phenolic Profile of Salt-Stressed Duckweed (Lemna minor) in Synthesis and Biological Activity of Green ZnO Nanoparticles.

This study investigated whether salinity during cultivation of the aquatic plant Lemna minor (duckweed) influences the phytochemical composition of plant extracts and the properties of green-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). Duckweed was cultivated under 0, 10, and 100 mM NaCl, followed by Orbitrap metabolomic profiling, nanoparticle synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and evaluation of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Orbitrap analysis revealed pronounced salinity-dependent changes in extract composition, including increased abundance of several flavonoids, gly

Comparing the Influence of High Doses of Different Zinc Salts on Oxidative Stress and Energy Depletion in IPEC-J2 Cells.

The current study aimed to investigate the influence of four supplemental zinc salts (chelated: Zn glycine; non-chelated: Zn sulfate, Zn citrate, Zn gluconate) among different zinc concentrations (30-300 μM) on cell proliferation, oxidative stress, and energy depletion in intestinal porcine jejunum epithelial cells (IPEC-J2). Different zinc salts affected cell viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner, which was mainly dependent on the uptake of intracellular Zn2+. Intracellular Zn2+ of Zn sulfate has taken up almost twice as high as Zn glycine when cells were loaded with 100-200 μM zinc.

The BEACH Domain Protein SPIRRIG Is Essential for Arabidopsis Salt Stress Tolerance and Functions as a Regulator of Transcript Stabilization and Localization.

Members of the highly conserved class of BEACH domain containing proteins (BDCPs) have been established as broad facilitators of protein-pro … ROTEIN 1 (DCP1), associates to mRNA processing bodies (P-bodies), and regulates their assembly upon salt stress. The finding that spi mutants exhibit salt hypersensitivity suggests that the local function of SPI at P-bodies is of biological relevance. Transcriptome-wide analysis revealed qualitative differences in the salt stress-regulated transcriptional res …

[Analysis of effects of salt stress on absorption and accumulation of mineral elements in Elymus spp. using atomic absorption spectrophotometer].

Salinization contributes significantly to soil degradation and the growth and survival of plants. A high level of salts imposes both ionic and osmotic stresses on plants, resulting in an excessive accumulation of sodium (Na) in plant tissues. Na toxicity disrupts the uptake of soil nutrients. Plant uptake and absorption of macro-elements under salt stress have been studied in plants, but there is little literature addressing the effect of salt stress on plant accumulation and absorption of micro-elements. Species in Elymus genus are among the most important forage plants on high-salinity soils…

Integrative analysis of morphological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic approaches to uncover the function of flavonoids in the salt stress response of Alhagi camelorum.

Salinity or salt stress significantly influences plant productivity, growth, and development, including that of Alhagi camelorum. In the current study, transcriptomic characterization discovered DEGs among the samples of four paired groups. During the metabolomic profiling, the top ten identified primary metabolites are amino acids and their derivatives, fatty acids, alcohols and amines, lipids, GP, heterocyclic compounds, and flavonoids. An analysis of comparative metabolic pathways and KEGG enrichment indicated that salt stress disrupts the biosynthesis of sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, an…

Synergistic effect of naphthalene acetic acid and salicylic acid on the growth and tolerance mechanism of cucumber under salt stress.

High soil salinity significantly hampers plant growth and crop yield by disrupting metabolic functions and causing oxidative, osmotic, and ionic stress. This study investigated the combined effects of naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) and salicylic acid (SA) in reducing salt stress in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cv. AR-8, filling a knowledge gap regarding multilateral plant growth regulator (PGR) interactions under saline conditions. Cucumber seedlings were subjected to 80 mM NaCl, with or without 200 ppm NAA and 300 ppm SA. Salt stress notably decreased seedling vigor, biomass, and chlorophyll …

Integrated Physiological, Transcriptomic, and Metabolomic Analyses Reveal the Mechanism Underlying the Response of Alfalfa to Combined Salt and Heat Stress.

Salt and heat stresses often occur simultaneously in arid regions, restricting the distribution and productivity of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). However, the mechanisms underlying alfalfa responses to combined salt and heat stress remain unclear. Here, we integrated phenotypic, physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses to investigate the regulatory mechanisms involved in combined stress responses. Combined stress more strongly inhibited plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight, net photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate than single stresses. Salt stress had a predominant e…

Silicon nutrition improves growth of salt-stressed wheat by modulating flows and partitioning of Na+, Cl- and mineral ions.

Silicon (Si) is reported to improve salt stress tolerance of cereals, but little is known about the effects of Si on flows and partitioning of sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl-), and essential mineral ions at the tissue and cellular level. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was exposed to 200 mM NaCl for 30 d in hydroponics, with or without 2 mM Si. X-ray microanalysis coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to quantify the cell-specific ion profiles across root and leaf cells, paralleled by measurements of wheat growth and physiological responses. Under salt stress, higher Na+ and Cl- co…

Deciphering the nitric oxide, cyanide and iron-mediated actions of sodium nitroprusside in cotyledons of salt stressed sunflower seedlings.

Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous signaling molecule in plants. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an established NO donor used in plant science research, simultaneously releases NO, cyanide (CN-) and iron (Fe) in solution. Since cyanide and iron mask NO effect of SNP, its use in NO research is debatable. Deciphering the action of SNP through NO, CN- or Fe has been undertaken in the present work. Cotyledons from salt stressed sunflower seedlings grown in the presence of NO donors were subjected to spectrofluorometric analysis of NO, CN- and Fe contents, and proteome and biochemical analyses. Diethyl…

Changes in hypothalamic cholecystokininA and cholecystokininB receptor subtypes and associated neuropeptide expression in response to salt-stress in the rat and mouse.

This study demonstrates cholecystokinin receptor plasticity in response to salt-loading in the rat and mouse hypothalamus. It identifies, for the first time, the cholecystokinin receptor subtypes involved, firstly by receptor autoradiography and secondly by in situ hybridization. Both species showed increases in hypothalamic [125I]Bolton Hunter-cholecystokinin-8 binding. Co-incubation with the specific cholecystokininA and cholecystokininB antagonists, devazepide and CI-988, indicated that in the rat cholecystokininB receptor binding markedly increased, with a small increase in cholecystokinin

Microbial Volatile 3-Methyl-1-Butanol Enhances Stomatal Closure and Salt Stress Tolerance via Ethylene and Jasmonate Pathways in Arabidopsis.

Microbial biostimulants can be applied to reliably improve crop productivity and quality. One such biostimulant is 3-methyl-1-butanol (3MB), a microbial volatile compound released by various plant growth-promoting microbes, which has gained recent attention due to its ability to promote plant growth and enhance stress tolerance. Previous studies have shown that 3MB induces stomatal closure and enhances salt stress tolerance in plants; however, its mode of action in these processes remains poorly understood. In this study, 6-day-old Arabidopsis seedlings were fumigated with 3MB (1 mg L-1) for 3…

Alfalfa Transcription Factor MsNAC2a Orchestrates the Homeostasis of Salt Stress Responses via Reactive Oxygen Species Accumulation and Hydrogen Sulphide Depletion.

Soil salinisation poses a significant threat to alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) growth and development, limiting its productivity and hindering its widespread cultivation. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) serves as an important gaseous signalling molecule in plants, mediating a myriad of physiological processes like salt tolerance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying H2S accumulation and its regulation under salinity stress in alfalfa are still not fully elucidated. In this study, we demonstrated that MsNAC2a, a NAC transcription factor, is a negative modulator of salt stress resistance in alfalf…

Enhancement of root growth under salt stress through the application of β-cyclocitral derivatives DQC-8 in Oryza sativa L.

Soil salinization is a major constraint to crop productivity, necessitating new strategies to enhance stress tolerance in staple cereals like rice (Oryza sativa L.). Although β-cyclocitral is a promising plant metabolite for promoting root growth under salt stress, its volatility and instability limit practical use. Here, we synthesized and screened a series of β-cyclocitral derivatives, identifying the acyl hydrazone DQC-8 as an optimized candidate. Under moderate salt stress (100 mM NaCl), DQC-8 treatment increased primary root length by 61% and plant biomass by up to 24% in 9311 rice compar…

Quantitative Time-Course Analysis of Osmotic and Salt Stress in Arabidopsis thaliana Using Short Gradient Multi-CV FAIMSpro BoxCar DIA.

A major limitation when undertaking quantitative proteomic time-course experimentation is the tradeoff between depth-of-analysis and speed-of-analysis. In high complexity and high dynamic range sample types, such as plant extracts, balance between resolution and time is especially apparent. To address this, we evaluate multiple compensation voltage (CV) high field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMSpro) settings using the latest label-free single-shot Orbitrap-based DIA acquisition workflows for their ability to deeply quantify the Arabidopsis thaliana seedling proteome.
